  • Purpose - The general objective of this study is to explain the governance mechanisms of relational exchanges by considering both economic and relational factors. As regards the relationship between opportunism and governance mechanisms, opportunism was hypothesized as being positively related to the use of the authority mechanism, and negatively related with use of the trust mechanism. Research design, data, and methodology - Purchasing relationships between original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their component suppliers were chosen as the empirical setting. Purchasing specialists in each company, who interact regularly with suppliers and have the major responsibility for managing the exchange relationships with suppliers, were used as the respondents for this study. A mail survey methodology was employed to collect data in the final field survey. Results - As predicted, opportunistic behavior is found to be negatively related to the use of the trust mechanism and positively related to the use of the authority mechanism. Therefore, the result supports the proposed hypotheses. Conclusions - By integrating research streams, this study contributes to the marketing discipline by improving our understanding of when and why different mixtures of governance mechanisms are used.

  • In today's world, the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing environment is fundamental to the survival and success of any organizations. This is particularly true for the Korean retailing industry which is in the throe of sweeping developments. Against the backdrop of an increasing importance of the environmental factors, it is imperative to look into what efforts are required of corporate enterprises in order to achieve successful long-term partnerships between and among the parties involved in the retail value chain. In spite of the critical importance of the need to understand the environmental factors and their influences on the retail value chain, a serious theoretical and empirical study into this subject has never been conducted. Moreover, previous research has overlooked the various mechanisms influencing the value chain in terms of ,control strategy' and 'control structure'. The purpose of this study is to investigate the direct and indirect modes of influences environmental dynamism exerts on opportunism, one of important relationship factors. This study particularly delves into the indirect modes of influence in terms of control strategy (control mechanism) and control structure (bureaucratic structuring). To this end, a survey research has been conducted of 200 suppliers in business relationships with Korean hypermarket retailers. The survey results show that environmental dynamism has a positive correlation with the opportunism of suppliers. In addition, the control mechanisms such as monitoring and incentives employed by retailers, in turn, have an indirect influence on the opportunism of suppliers. In other words, the monitoring of retailers has a positive correlation with the opportunism of suppliers, while the use of bureaucratic structuring has a negative correlation with opportunism. This study discusses how both retailers and their suppliers should respond to the domestic retail business environment with highly dynamic characteristics, in order to achieve a long-term win-win partnership with one another. It also presents ideas to retailers with regard to what kinds of management strategies and management efforts required to effectively control the opportunism of suppliers.

  • This study aims to provide distributors with several implications on the channel strategy by testing factors which influence on the offsetting investment. Medium-sized distributor facing a relatively inferior power can cause profit vulnerability from large manufacurer's opportunistic behaviors. At the same time, we tested the relationship commitment to the relation with manufacturer as another alternative strategy taken by medium-sized distributer. For this research, samples from dealers in oil-petroleum refinery industry were selected and the data was collected using mail survey. The data was analyzed utilizing validity test, reliability test, factor analysis, correlation analysis and LISREL. The major analyzed results are as follows: First, the offsetting investment of preventing loss from manufacturer's opportunism didn't affect medium-sized distributor's sales empirically. Second, the hypothesis that the more the medium-sized distributor's transaction specific assets which they invest in the transactional relationship with manufacturer, the more the safeguard against the expected opportunism of manufacturer was not supported by the results. Third, the more use of coercive power by the manufacturer, the more increase in the perception of expected opportunism of manufacturer by the medium-sized distributor, it make stimulates offsetting investment as safeguard by medium-sized distributor and it has negative effect on developing commitment. Finally, the large manufactures dealing with a medium-sized distributor firm which had a reputation of fairness didn't make offsetting investment as a response for distributor's opportunism.

  • Despite the importance of the impact of network structure on the relationships between firms and firm performance, few studies have investigated these effects. This study investigates how network openness influences the relationships between TSI, opportunism, technological uncertainty, and supplier performance. We also try to figure out how network openness functions as a governance mechanism.

  • So far, the studies on the dissolution of relationship have regarded dissolution intention as the final consequence, therefore have not investigated phenomena after the formation of dissolution intention. This study is a seminal work which shows the mechanisms of deterioration of dissolution intention toward complete dissolution. So, this study has the scope from the formation of dissolution intention and to the right before of the complete dissolution. This study has investigated the consequences of dissolution intention(increasing opportunism, decreasing transaction specific investment, and decreasing cooperation) and the relationships of them empirically. As the result of hypotheses test using data collected from 179 newspaper branch office samples, all hypotheses are supported. Dissolution intention has the positive effect on opportunism and negative effect on transaction specific investment. Opportunism decrease transaction specific investment and cooperation. And, transaction specific investment has the positive effect on cooperation. Finally, the authors discussed the theoretical contributions, managerial implications, and limitations of this study and presented the future research directions.

  • A purpose of this study is to measure degree of solidarity and conflict of the beauty salon franchisees according to an influence strategy of franchiser and grasp characteristics revealed from managing a franchise system. This will also contribute to improving results of franchise systems and considering a direction for development. This study examined existing studies relevant with conflict and solidarity and analysed relativity between relevant variables and grasped the flow of studies and then set hypotheses in order to present a device for decreasing conflict within a franchise system of beauty shops and for increasing a solidarity and subsequently analysed samples and tested data. The data for this study are researched by sending questionnaires to beauty salons which participated in one of franchise systems and they are analyzed by various methods in a statistics. After studying some relevant theories, this study used the definition of the franchise system in beauty salons as an entity of a political-economy paradigm. A franchiser desires to influence member shops with an influence-strategy. Therefore member shops which perceived it go through a conflict and then such a process is revealed as making significant influence on solidarity. Beauty salon franchise exists by reciprocal confidence and transaction. If an opportunism gain in influence owing to an conflict intensification, there would be no steady formation of relationship. Therefore the head office should develop a member-shop-management-system by more scientific and more technical methods and prevent, in advance, member stores from seeking for negative opportunism.

  • While strategic alliance of multinational corporation has boost, opportunistic behavior is also increased recently. This study examines the cause of opportunism in strategic alliance by focusing on the development of opportunistic behavior, a process in which resource complementarity and risk perception decides attitudinal direction, ultimately leading to opportunism. Empirical test based on 257 alliance participants shows that risk perception had a greater influence on firms' attitudinal and behavioral directions compared to benefit perception. Notably, relational risk heavily influenced firms' competitive attitude and opportunistic behavior. Finally, the study concludes that firms' competitive and independent attitude caused by risk perception negatively influence alliance outcome. Based on the results, it is drawn that alongside the external tools such as surveillance, control, monitoring or legalistic pleas, management of risk perception during the alliance process has significance influence on the achievement of alliance goals.

  • In this study, transaction cost approach was applied to analysis on direct export determinants of SMEs by using key attributes of transactions, asset specificity, environmental uncertainty, frequency and marketing capability, with a parameter of opportunism. Typical Transaction Cost Analysis theory explains that when transaction cost with business channels(whether it is for buy or sell) increase, the firms integrate the channels. So it is a choice made by firms regarding direct versus indirect channels. The theory was extended to a model of choice of institutional form of direct or indirect export by a norm of opportunism in this empirical study. The survey result showed that lower level of asset specificity and marketing capability or higher level of environmental uncertainty were likely to expose indirect exporters to higher level of opportunism of direct exporter. And we also saw that indirect exporters were likely to choose direct export chanel when opportunism of exporters was higher. From the standpoint of theory, we can say that the basic propositions of the Transaction Cost Analysis, except the attribute of frequency, are supported. This study result could provide a profiling of target business areas and firms for government's policy on direct export promotion of SMEs.

  • While a number of studies have recognized the importance of environment of channel systems and consequences of changed environment, only limited studies have dealt with this issue theoretically and practically. The purpose of this study is to empirically validate whether one dimension of environment, called dynamism, has an influence on the relationship characteristics such as transaction specific investment, opportunism and conflict or not; further, it is designed to delve into whether these relationship characteristics have any influence on one crucial relationship quality, 'trust' and its two constituent dimensions - credibility and benevolence. In order to provide empirical validation, a survey was conducted to 163 sales office managers at a major newspaper publisher in Korea. An analysis of the data retrieved from this survey indicated that while environmental dynamism has a positive influence on the publisher's opportunism and conflict perceived by the sales office managers, it did not show a direct influence on the transaction specific investment made by the publisher. Furthermore, while publisher's transaction specific investment had a positive influence on the credibility and the benevolence respectively, publisher's opportunism and level of sales office conflict had a negative influence on the credibility and the benevolence respectively. Currently, a publisher is facing an unprecedentedly dynamic environment. This study should provide ample implications for the publisher in establishing trust, which is a crucial condition in developing and maintaining a long-term successful relationship with its sales offices.
