KPX(Korea Power Exchange) predicts that summer peak load will be 70,700MW and system overload will be 150% from contingency analysis. This paper presents a method to operate power system at 2010 summer peak. about equipment variation, power system variation, analysis results of voltage stability, and the method to relief overload by comparing 2009 and 2010. Especially, transmission constraints to prevent global contingency in Korea power system and the role of SPS(Special Protection System) to prevent voltage collapse when fault occurs are introduced.
This paper describes the control philosophy of ESP(Electronic Stability Program) which consists of the stability control the fault diagnosis and the fault tolerant control. Besides the functional performance of the stability control, robustness of control and fault diagnosis is focused to avoid the unnecessary activation of the controller. The look-up tables are mentioned to have the accurate target yaw rate of the vehicle and obtained from vehicle tests for the whole operation range of the steering wheel angle and the vehicle speed. The wheel slip control with a design goal of wheel slip invariance is implemented for the yaw compensation and the target wheel slip is determined by difference between the target yaw rate and actual yaw rate. Since the ESP has a high severity level and the robust control is required, the robustness margin for the stability control is determined according to several uncertainties and the robust fault diagnosis is performed. Both computer simulation and test results are shown in this paper.
The investigation of running stability of the train for curved track is necessary in view of preventing the train from derailment caused by unbalanced forces transferred from the wheel and guaranteeing moderate level of running safety in curve sections. This paper carried out an analysis of running stability of tilting trains in conventional line which the test operation of tilting trains under development are scheduled. For this purpose, the wheel load and lateral pressure to the rail are evaluated. The criteria for the calculated wheel load and derailment coefficient are compared to the design criteria for running stability. It is founded that the running stability of tilting trains for curved track is guaranteed to have sufficient safety and the train speed in curve is governed by the geometric layout of track rather than the criteria for running stability.

The stability of the two-phase flow in a heated channel is of great importance in the design and operation of the boilers and light water nuclear reactors, because it can cause flow oscillations and lead to a violation of thermal limits with resultant overheating of the channels and cladding. This paper presents a systematic evaluation to the variation effects of the basic four (4) dimensionless parameters in a homogeneous equilibrium model. The flow stability is examined on the ground of static characteristic curves. The complicated transfer function of flow dynamics which gives consideration to the transport lag of density wave is derived, and the transient flow stability is analysed by applying the Nyquist stability criterion in control engineering. The analysis results summed up as follows 1. The coolant flow becomes stable in large friction number and specific flow, while it is unstabale in small friction number and flow. 2. Large phase-change number and Froude number destabilize the two-phase flow, but small numbers stabilize it. The effect to variation of phase-change number is more dominant compared with Froude number. 3. The dynamic analysis is required to hold the sufficient safety of heated channels since only static results does not keep it. The special attention could be payed in the design and operation of heat engines, because the unstaable region exists within the stable boundary at small and middle phase-change number and Froude number.

Worldwide growth in hydrocarbon and energy demand is driving the oil and gas companies to drill more wells in complex situations such as areas with high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. As a result, in recent years the number of wells in these conditions have been increased significantly. Wellbore instability is one of the main issues during the drilling operation especially for directional and horizontal wells. Many researchers have studied the wellbore stability in complex situations and developed mathematical models to mitigate the instability problems before drilling operation. In this work, a fully coupled thermoporoelastic model is developed to study the well stability in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. The results show that the performance of the model is highly dependent on the truly evaluated rock mechanical properties. It is noted that the rock mechanical properties should be evaluated at elevated pressures and temperatures. However, in many works, this is skipped and the mechanical properties, which are evaluated at room conditions, are entered into the model. Therefore, an accurate stability analysis of high-pressure, high-temperature wells is achieved by measuring the rock mechanical properties at elevated pressures and temperatures, as the difference between the model outputs is significant.
The recent spread of scaled telemanipulation into microsurgery and the nano-world increasingly requires the identification of the possible operation region as a main system specification. A teleoperation system is a complex cascaded system since the human operator, master, slave, and communication are involved bilaterally. Hence, a small time delay inside a master and slave system can be critical to the overall system stability even without communication time delay. In this paper we derive an upper bound of the scaling product of position and force by using Llewellyns unconditional stability. This bound can be used for checking the validity of the designed bilateral controller. Time delay from the sample and hold of computer control and its effects on stability of scaled teleoperation are modeled and simulated based on the transfer function of the teleoperation system. The feasible operation region in terms of position and force scaling decreases sharply as the sampling rate decreases and time delays inside the master and slave increase.

We investigated the stability of cryocooler-cooled high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils by using a computer program based on FEM. In this study, the current at which "thermal runaway" occurs, which depends on the relationship between the cooling power of the cryocooler and the heat generation in HTS coils, was adopted as a stability criterion of cryocooler operating HTS coils. It was shown that cryocooler-cooled HTS coil was stable in operating current above the critical current from the numerical analysis results by HTS model coil. And also, if we efficiently remove the heat generation from HTS coils by potimizing heat drain, the ramp-rate limitation can be mitigated because the effect of AC loss by the current rise was too small. Furthermore, in the case of pulsed operation; the HTS model coil is ramped from zero to the peak value in one second and back to zero current in one second, such as the operation of SMES device, the peak value of poerating current is 1.5-2 times greater than that of the thermal runaway current.
Recently, the usage of containers in marine transportation is rapidly increasing. The problem of ship stability is important because of its direct influence to the loss of the human-life, ship, and merchandise. However, the assessment for ship stability during container loading/unloading in port is dependent on human experience only. On the other hand, the emerging information and communication technologies of shipbuilding industrial environments are rapidly changing. To respond to the situation, a new paradigm has been matured with new concepts such as the concrete method. Especially, all the efforts are shown to be concentrated to realize the concept of Simulation Based Design(SBD) based on three dimensional Computer Aided Design(CAD) model. In this paper, ship model-based simulation methodology for design and operation of ship is suggested, and for the verification of suggested methodology, the system for stability assessment of ship during container loading/unloading was developed using ENVISION, a general-purpose simulation system. The developed system consists of geometric modeling subsystem, basic calculation subsystem, and Computer Aided Engineering(CAE) subsystem. In addition, interface to CAE/CAD /simulation system such as SIKOB and ENVISION is provided.
This paper presents a new algorithm for determining generator operation point for maintaining stability considering generator faults in Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. As the HVDC system consumes reactive power for the transmission of active power substantially, compensation of reactive power is essential. And the HVDC system is operated on frequency control mode. That is to say, the HVDC system almost manages system frequency. Therefore, we recognized that the Jeju system could be unstable if the reactive power consumed by the HVDC is insufficient when out-of-step occurs with large generators. When the solution of power flow analysis does not converge due to the unstable system phenomenon, we have difficulty in establishing countermeasures as the post-fault information is not available. In this paper, for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty in establishing countermeasures, we introduce the CPF(Continuation Power Flow) algorithm. This paper suggests an algorithm for calculating the output limitation of the generator to maintain the stability in case of generator fault in the Jeju system.
This paper proposes a probabilistic evaluation for the transient stability of electrical power systems incorporating FACTS devices. The uncertainties of the fault location and relay operation time play important keys in power system instability evaluation. The TCSC and SVC are employed for the reduction of system instability probability. This method is demonstrated by the WSCC test system and the results are compared with and without FACTS by means of Monte Carlo simulation.
