  • Electronic circuits with semiconductor and IC are very weak against the surge voltage and currents. The surge protective devices for electronic circuit and AC power lines are becoming more widely used. It is possible to give rise to the malfunction of the earth leakage circuit breaker(ELB) due to the operation of surge protective devices, and the interruption of AC power lines on account of the malfunction of the ELB brings about several disadvantages such as low operation efficiency and reliability of electronic and informational systems, economical loss, and etc. The aim of the present work is to investigate the dead operation characteristics of the ELB against the surge voltages. The impulse generator of 10[kV) in an 1.2/ 50[~) voltage waveform was fabricated. The dead operation characteristics of the ELB applied by surge voltages were measured under the conditions of KS C 4613 and the test circuit with a varistor. As a consequence, the peak value of the zero-phase sequence circuit of the ELB is increased as the surge voltage and stray capacitance increase. All of the ELBs used in this work were satisfied with the lightning impulse dead operation test condition defined in KS C 4613. However one specimen only did not bring about dead operation in the condition of the test circuit with a varistor. There is high possibility that a large portion of the ELB installed at the AC power lines with the surge protective devices bring about the dead operation.

  • The metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was studied. Hydrocarbon fueled operation is necessary to make SOFC system. Different operating characteristics for metal-supported SOFC are used than for conventional ones as hydrocarbon fueled operation. Metal-supported SOFC was successfully fabricated by a high temperature sinter-joining method and the cathode was in-situ sintered. Synthetic gas, which is compounded as the diesel reformate gas composition and low hydrocarbons was completely removed by the diesel reformer. Metal-supported SOFC with synthetic gas was operated and evaluated and its characteristics analyzed. Button cell and $5{\times}5cm^2$ single stack were mainly operated and analyzed. Long-term operation using diesel reformate shows degradation, and degradation analysis was completed in the view of metal oxidation. Solution to increase stability of long-term operation was tried in the way of materials and operating conditions. Finally, $5{\times}5cm^2$ metal-supported single stack using synthetic gas was operated for 1000 hours under the modified condition.

  • The heat produced by the fission in the fuel of HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, is transferred from the primary cooling water to the secondary cooling water through heat exchangers, and the heat absorbed by the secondary cooling water is released into the atmosphere by the 33 MW cooling tower which is a mechanical induced draft and counter flow type. If the outlet temperature of cooling tower exceeds 33 of due to the loss of the cooling tower performance under reactor operation above $50\%$ of the full power, the reactor power should be reduced to half of the full power for safe operation. Therefore, the cooling capability of cooling tower should be maintained for the reactor to be normally operated. To predict the capability of cooling tower for full power reactor operation of 30 MW, the performance test of cooling tower was done at the reactor present power of 24 MW and the capability was respectively evaluated by characteristics and performance curves methods in accordance with the Code of Cooling Tower Institute of U.S.A. to confirm the reliability of evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed, through the results of each evaluation, that the cooling capability of cooling tower meets the design required heat load. Also, the equations of the performance and the characteristics curves of the cooling tower, based on the collected data during this performance test, was obtained for developing the calculation program to predict the cooling capability during reactor operation.

  • This study evaluated advanced water treatment (AWT) system in Korea. There are currently 16 plants operating with AWT. However, no attempt has been made to evaluate AWT system. This study selected one water treatment plant with AWT (pre-ozonation + BAC). Using the operation data from 1995 to 2001 and pilot study results, the post-evaluation of the AWT system has been conducted. The study found that AWT improved water qualities of organic, ammonia, and turbidity, as expected. However, the extent of the improvement was generally short of the pilot study expectations. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction. Pre-ozonation failed to decrease coagulant consumption. The dosage increased rather than decreased. AWT was, however, successful to decrease chlorine consumption. The chlorine reduction was related to the change in raw water characteristics and AWT introduction, Both operation of pre-ozonation and reduced ammonia loading were responsible for the reduction. AWT increased the operation cost. Maintenance, raw water, and power cost increased, while labor and chemical cost decreased. Manpower reduction resulting form automation caused the decrease of labor cost. The reduction of chlorine consumption caused the decrease of chemical cost.

  • Greater expansion and more frequent operation of the railroad transportation system anticipated due to its characteristics including low cost, safety and mass transportation. Recently, effects on the railway structures due to expansion of newly constructed road, construction of subway, city gas pipeline, communication network, electric power network and construction of other railway underground crossing in accordance with urban planning and organization has influenced safe operation of trains. Accordingly, standard for selection of construction method that will enable construction of more economical and rational subway underground crossing structures by preventing problems occurring at the time of above construction works and accidents in safe operation of trains due to construction in advance is definitively necessary. Although there are numerous construction methods that can be applied at the time of construction of railway underground crossing, there are much difficulties in selection of appropriate construction method that considers characteristics of each construction method on non-excavation type construction method, train operation plan of number of operational routes and on-site circumstances. Therefore, this research aims to present rational standard for selection of construction method for such, and standard for slowdown speed and interception of train when passing the areas of slowdown in sectors under construction.
