  • For safe and stable operations of power plants, it is essential to monitor closely crucial measurement values related to power plant trips. In this paper, an intelligent power plant operating state monitoring technique enabling the operating crew member to monitor conveniently the status of the important measurement values and to perceive almost instantly the significance of the implications of those measurement values is developed. The proposed technique is called a "POST(Plant Operating State Tracking) Chart" technique and provides the foundations in developing an intelligent and integrated power plant operating state monitoring support system called the "P-OASIS"(Plant Operation Assessment and Support Intelligent System). The P-OASIS is applied to a thermal power plant of 500[MW] capacity and exhibited impressive performances.

  • The fuel operating ranges of fusion tokamak-based power plants are estimated using the improved engineering breakeven equation. The Lawson criterion equations are derived in the form of a triple product with a focus on engineering breakeven and the subbreakeven operating range. The relationship of fuel parameters to the power plant net efficiency is outlined. Analysis shows that the operating ranges of the suitable fuel parameters form a closed area, the size of which affects the net efficiency of the power plant. The obtained fuel operating ranges confirm the well-known fact that DT fuel is currently the only fusion fuel useable in tokamak-based fusion power plants. It is also shown that the energy utilization of pB fuel is possible in the subbreakeven operating range but is conditioned by the very high efficiency of the power plant equipment. For the utilization of DD, DHe3, and pB fuels, the required magnetic fields are indicatively estimated.

  • This paper presents an optimal operating strategy of distributed generation (DG) with reliability worth evaluation of distribution systems. Using DG for peak-shaving unit could reduce the overall system operating cost, and using DG for standby power unit could reduce the customer interruption cost. If DG operating cost is less than utility power cost in peak time, DG should be running to reduce the overall system operating cost. When customer interruption cost enlarges, however, standby power strategy may be the better operating strategy than peak-shaving strategy. Selection of whether DG should be operated for peak-shaving or for standby power, needs the accurate reliability worth evaluation and the accurate power cost evaluation. Instead of using annual average reliability worth, the concept of hourly reliability worth is introduced in this paper to determine the optimal operating decision of DG. Applying suggested hourly reliability worth, the distribution companies that possess DG could set up the optimal operating strategy of DG.

  • The emergency AC power supply system of the nuclear power plant is designed to supply the power to the nuclear reactor at the emergency operating condition. The safety function of the diesel generator at the nuclear power plant is to supply AC electric power to the plant safety system whenever the preferred AC power supply is unavailable. The reliable operation of onsite emergency diesel generator should be ensured by a conditioning monitoring system designed to maintain and monitor and forecast the reliability level of diesel generator. To do this kind of diesel generator condition monitoring we reviewed several operating factors and history of the wolsong unit 3 diesel generator and selected the proper conditioning monitoring operating factors.

  • The deregulation and structural reform of power markets have started from the early 90s, which has brought about new studies on the new environment. Regardless the market structure, however, power systems need to be operated and planned in a stable and reliable manner. Therefore, decisions on proper amount of operating reserves and their reliable operations are very important. Up to now, the decision processes of operating reserves depend mainly on experiences of operators in Korea. When Korean power market comes under private management, operating reserves would influence power rate as well as power Quality, Therefore, it is time to prepare reasonable operating reserve standards in a systematic way for the new environment. This study suggests the proper operating reserve standards considering rules of the power market in Korea. To verify the adequacy of the proposed standards, stability and frequency characteristics of the Korean power system are analyzed as well.

  • Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) is a good candidate for long-distance underwater wireless power transmission. In this work we investigate the transmission efficiency of underwater OWPT, depending on the operating wavelength. We consider four operating wavelengths: infrared, red, green, and blue. We also consider the cases of pure water and sea water for the working conditions. Our results show that it is necessary to select the operating wavelength of underwater OWPT according to the transmission distance and water type of the target application.

  • During severe emergencies which result in insufficient generation to meet load, an automatic load shedding method considering the spinning and operating reserve can establish the optimum system operation. This paper presents methods and results of a study on the optimum operating scheme with spinning and operating reserve power in case of outage of large generator units to prevent frequency decay and continue stable operation. This study covers following three parts 1) Analysis of spinning reserve characteristics 2) Determination of operating reserve requirements 3) Development of the optimum load shedding programs By this study the optimum system operating method was recommended for reliable operation of power system.

  • This paper presents the criteria for setting the dynamic operating mode of BESS(Battery Energy Storage System) in the bulk power systems. ESS has been expected to improve the degraded dynamic performance of the power system with high penetration of the renewable resources. While ESS is controlled in steady state or dynamic operating mode for its better effectiveness depending on the operating conditions of power systems, the criteria for setting the dynamic operating mode for the transient period needs to be robust enough to cover all the different conditions. The proposed criteria consider the varying conditions and the operating practices of the bulk power systems.

  • Power transformers are the most important facilities in the substation of electrical power, yet they do not have the efficient operating life characteristics which are the important elements of repairing and maintenance in regional conditions. This paper describes the statistical analysis of operating conditions and troubles on transformers for the operating life assessment using Statistical Analysis System programs, Hazard method and Weibull distributions. We analyze transformers in several methods, and compares correlation relationship of operating life and troubles. Therefore, this study will be the useful basic operating life prediction technique of power transformers in the future.

  • In order to prevent voltage collapse. this paper introduces the idea of the intelligent system and operating polices for a power system, then presents the results of voltage stability studies for that power system. The intelligent system includes a dedicated computer doing calculation and evaluation jobs and several intelligent relays serving as last guards to carry out the pre-set remedies. In the intelligent system, P-V curves are used to determine the operating margin from the current operating point to the maximum operating point, or the nose point. This paper suggests an operating guide for voltage stability of a power system. The effectiveness of location ad amount of load shedding for the different power load models are studied.
