  • Synthesizing low-dimensional structures of oxide semiconductors is a promising approach to fabricate highly efficient gas sensors by means of possible enhancement in surface-to-volume ratios of their sensing materials. In this work, vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods are successfully synthesized on a transparent glass substrate via seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method with the use of a ZnO nanoparticle seed layer, which is formed by thermally oxidizing a sputtered Zn metal film. Structural and optical characterization by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy reveals the successful preparation of the ZnO nanorods array of the single hexagonal wurtzite crystalline phase. From gas sensing measurements for the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas, the vertically aligned ZnO nanorod array is observed to have a highly responsive sensitivity to NO2 gas at relatively low concentrations and operating temperatures, especially showing a high maximum sensitivity to NO2 at 250 ℃ and a low NO2 detection limit of 5 ppm in dry air. These results along with a facile fabrication process demonstrate that the ZnO nanorods synthesized on a transparent glass substrate are very promising for low-cost and high-performance NO2 gas sensors.

  • The directivity characteristics of acoustic transducers for conventional single-beam echo sounders considerably limit the detection of fish-size information in acoustic field surveys. To overcome this limitation, using the split-aperture technique to estimate the direction of arrival of single-echo signals from individual fish distributed within the sound beam represents the most reliable method for fish-size classification. For this purpose, we design and develop a split-beam data acquisition and processing system to obtain fish-size information in conjunction with a 50-kHz single-beam echo sounder. This split-beam data acquisition and processing system consists of a notebook PC, a field-programmable gate array board, an external single-transmitter module with a matching network, and four-channel receiver modules operating at a frequency of 50-kHz. The functionality of the developed split-beam data processor is tested and evaluated. Acoustic measurements in an experimental water tank showed that the developed data acquisition and processing system can be used as a fish-sizing echo sounder to estimate the size distribution of individual fish, although an external single-transmitter module with a matching network is required.

  • The government has strengthened the system of restricting participation of large corporations to limit participation in national information system construction projects and to increase participation of SME software companies. This study analyzes the financial performances of small and medium sized IT firms in Korea three years prior and 3 years after the restrictions on participation of large firm. A sample of 121 small and medium-sized IT services firms were classified into 3 groups and statistical techniques (T-test and one-way ANOVA) were used for the purpose of the analysis. In the three years after the restriction of participation of large corporations, the total assets and sales of the medium and small IT service firms were positive, but the operating profit and net profit were negative. There were many worries about the introduction of the restriction on the participation of large corporations, but many were stabilized. However, the negative impact was more pronounced for SMEs. Therefore, the reduction effect of SME IT service companies is different from the first legislative purpose of enforcing the restriction system of large enterprises, so we propose to revise the policy.

  • We describe a common optical system that merges a LADAR system, which generates a point cloud, and a more traditional imaging system operating in the LWIR, which generates image data. The optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined by analysis of detection ranges of the LADAR sensor, and the result was applied to design a common optical system using LADAR sensors and LWIR sensors; the performance of these sensors was then evaluated. The minimum detectable signal of the $128{\times}128-pixel$ LADAR detector was calculated as 20.5 nW. The detection range of the LADAR optical system was calculated to be 1,000 m, and according to the results, the optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined to be 15.7 cm. The modulation transfer function (MTF) in relation to the diffraction limit of the designed common optical system was analyzed and, according to the results, the MTF of the LADAR optical system was 98.8% at the spatial frequency of 5 cycles per millimeter, while that of the LWIR optical system was 92.4% at the spatial frequency of 29 cycles per millimeter. The detection, recognition, and identification distances of the LWIR optical system were determined to be 5.12, 2.82, and 1.96 km, respectively.

  • In this paper, specimen tests with simulated large seismic conditions have been carried out to investigate damage characteristics such as structural deformation and crack initiation under seismic loading. The mechanical behavior of the specimens is predicted by numerical simulations and the strain-based damage evaluations are performed. Finite element analyses of the specimens under the simulated seismic loading at room and operating temperatures were carried out for low alloy steel and stainless steel materials. Peak strain amplitude, cumulative fatigue damage and cumulative strain limit damage are calculated considering the nature of cyclic loading. In all cases, the allowable damage criteria are exceeded at the time of observing cracks visually in the tests. Therefore, it is confirmed that the material behavior due to the large seismic loads can be predicted by the numerical method and the structural damage of the materials can be evaluated conservatively based on the strain criteria.

  • Chemical decontamination of primary systems in a nuclear power plant (NPP) prior to commencing the main decommissioning activities is required to reduce radiation exposure during its process. The entire process is repeated until the desired decontamination factor is obtained. To achieve improved decontamination factors over a shorter time with fewer cycles, the appropriate flow characteristics are required. In addition, to prepare an operating procedure that is adaptable to various conditions and situations, the transient analysis results would be required for operator action and system impact assessment. In this study, the flow characteristics in the steady-state and transient conditions for the chemical decontamination operations of the Kori-1 NPP were analyzed and compared via the MARS-KS code simulation. Loss of residual heat removal (RHR) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) simulations were conducted for the postulated abnormal events. Loss of RHR results showed the reactor coolant system (RCS) temperature increase, which can damage the reactor coolant pump (RCP)s by its cavitation. The SGTR results indicated a void formation in the RCS interior by the decrease in pressurizer (PZR) pressure, which can cause surface exposure and tripping of the RCPs unless proper actions are taken before the required pressure limit is achieved.

  • Wi-Fi provides some low-power connection solutions that other Bluetooth cannot provide, and at the same time brings many benefits. First, there is a potentially higher data rate: it can reach 230mbps. Wi-Fi coverage is also wider than competitors, and its operating frequency is also 5GHz, which is much less congested than 2.4GHz. Finally, it also supports IP networks, which is important if you want to send data to the cloud without complexity. The 802.11ac standard of the previous generation still accounts for most shipments (80.9%) and revenue (76.2%). However, there is a limit to accepting IoT devices that will continue to increase significantly in the future. To solve this problem, the new Wi-Fi 6 standard is expected to be the solution (IEEE 802.11ax) which is quickly becoming the main driving force of the wireless local area network (WLAN) market. According to IDC market research analysts, in the first quarter of 2020, independent access points (APs) supported by Wi-Fi 6 accounted for 11.8% of shipments, but 21.8% of revenue. In this paper, we have compared and analyzed the IoT connectivity, QoS, and security requirements of devices using Wi-Fi 6 network.

  • Silicene is an emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor material which has been envisaged to be compatible with conventional silicon technology. This paper presents a theoretical study of uniformly doped silicene with aluminium (AlSi3) Field-Effect Transistor (FET) along with the benchmark of device performance metrics with other 2D materials. The simulations are carried out by employing nearest neighbour tight-binding approach and top-of-the-barrier ballistic nanotransistor model. Further investigations on the effects of the operating temperature and oxide thickness to the device performance metrics of AlSi3 FET are also discussed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AlSi3 FET can achieve on-to-off current ratio up to the order of seven and subthreshold swing of 67.6 mV/dec within the ballistic performance limit at room temperature. The simulation results of AlSi3 FET are benchmarked with FETs based on other competitive 2D materials such as silicene, graphene, phosphorene and molybdenum disulphide.

  • This study aims to validate a fast method of simultaneous analysis of 365 LCamenable and 142 GC-amenable pesticides in hen eggs by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), respectively, operating in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) acquisition modes. The sample preparation was based on quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction. Key method performance parameters investigated were specificity, linearity, limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy, precision and measurement uncertainty. The method was validated at two spiking levels (10 and 50 ㎍/kg), and good recoveries (70%-120%) and relative standard deviations (RSDs) (≤20) were achieved for 92.9% of LC-amenable and 86.6% of GC-amenable pesticide residues. The LOQs were ≤10 ㎍/kg for 94.2% of LC-amenable and 92.3% of GC-amenable pesticides. The validated method was further applied to 100 egg samples from caged hens, and none of the pesticides was quantified.

  • Microbubble technology has been widely applied in various industrial fields. Recently, research on many types of microbubble application technology has been conducted experimentally, but there is a limit in deriving the optimal design and operating conditions. Therefore, if the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of multiphase flow is used to supplement these experimental studies, it is expected that the time and cost required for prototype production and evaluation tests will be minimized and optimal results will be derived. However, few studies have been conducted on multiphase flow CFD analysis to interpret fluid flow in microbubble generators using swirl flow. In this study, CFD simulation of multiphase flow was performed to analyze the air-water mixing process and fluid flow characteristics in a microbubble generator with a dual-chamber structure. Based on the simulation results, it was confirmed that a negative pressure was formed on the central axis of rotation due to the strong swirling flow. And it could be seen that the air inside the suction tube was introduced into the inner chamber of the microbubble generator. In addition, as the high-speed mixed fluid collided with external water sucked by the negative pressure near the outlet, a large amount of microbubbles was ejected due to the shear force between the two flows flowing in opposite directions.
