  • It is common practice to use Reduced Web Beam Sections (RWBS) in steel moment resisting frames. Perforation of beam web in these members may cause stress and strain concentration around the opening area and facilitate ductile fracture under cyclic loading. This paper presents a numerical study on the cyclic fracture of these structural components. The considered connections are configured as T-shaped assemblies with beams of elongated circular perforations. The failure of specimens under Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue (ULCF) condition is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is a micromechanics based fracture model. In each model, CVGM fracture index is calculated based on the stress and strain time histories and then models with different opening configurations are compared based on the calculated fracture index. In addition to the global models, sub-models with refined mesh are used to evaluate fracture index around the beam to column weldment. Modeling techniques are validated using data from previous experiments. Results show that as the perforation size increases, opening corners experience greater fracture index. This is while as the opening size increases the maximum observed fracture index at the connection welds decreases. However, the initiation of fracture at connection welds occurs at lower drift angles compared to opening corners. Finally, a probabilistic framework is applied to CVGM in order to account for the uncertainties existing in the prediction of ductile fracture and results are discussed.

  • Foundation structure for the main engine heavy spare parts in the engine room is susceptible to resonance problem due to outfitting weight. In addition the deck floor has a large opening for the main engine installation and maintenance, which further weakens the foundation structure. To reinforce the weak structure, two types of approaches have been used; 1) insert an H-pillar below or above the floor and 2) increase the stiffener size. In this paper, the H-pillar approach is used to solve the vibration problem of the foundation structure in the engine room opening area. A commercial program is used to analyze the vibration problem ad to find the location and the size of the H-pillar. Modal test at the quay and on-board vibration measurement during the sea trial have confirmed the validity of inserting an H-pillar below the floor.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing glass particle contamination in single dose glass ampules upon opening. Method: The study was single case experimental design. Different methods of opening ampule (hand, wooden stick), different sizes of ampules(1cc, 2cc) and different sizes of needles(17gauge, 23gauge, $5{\mu}m$ filter) were evaluated. Eighteen ampules were randomly assigned in each group. The number of glass ampule particles ${\ge}10{\mu}m$ was counted by microscope. Results: There was no significant difference in the number of particles aspirated by opening methods. But number of glass particles was much lower when using 1cc ampules rather than 2cc ampules and was also much lower when using smaller size needles and needles which include a $5{\mu}m$ filter rather than larger size of needles. Conclusion: We suggest that larger bore or unfiltered needles increase the risk of aspirating more glass particles than smaller bore or filter needles. In addition, these data show that a wooden stick can be used as a method opening glass ampules.

  • This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of opening thick plates on Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing Kinematic design data for mat of building structures. Vibration analysis that opening plate subjected to In-plane stress is presented in this paper. Finite element analysis of rectangular opening plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is supported on Pasternak foundation, the Winkler foundation parameter is varied with 0, 10, 102, 103 and the shear foundation parameter is 0, 5, 10, 15. The ratio of In-plane force to critical load is applied as 0.2, 0.8, respectively. This paper analyzed varying opening Position and opening size.

  • Succeding to Report I, to determine the effect of opening conditions and areas of clothes ($10\%,\;20\%,\;30\%,\;40\%$ of total area) on the warmth keeping properties, cooling method was employed by using Latin Square Design, The following results were obtained: 1) The warmth keeping ratio was varied with the opening conditions and the: order was downward, upward, horizontal and up & downward opening 2) The size of opening areas was in inverse proportion to the warmth keeping ratio, 3) In the horizontal opening, the thickness of air layers in clothes did not effect on the warmth keeping ratio.

  • This paper investigates the effects of outdoor pressure fluctuations on natural ventilation through an opening on a building envelope. The ventilation airflow rate depends on the magnitude and the period of the pressure fluctuations, the size of the opening relative to the space volume, and the resistance characteristics of the opening. Non-dimensional parameters have been derived, which determine indoor pressure responses due to outdoor pressure fluctuations. The flow regions are categorized into (1) synchronized region, (2) opening resistance region, and (3) transition region depending on the non-dimensional parameter derived. Pressure fluctuations and flow characteristics are investigated numerically using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method.

  • This study was conducted in order to improvement of fishing gear and fishing operating system for anchovy boat seine by bag net A-type and B-type was attached with half size modified nets. Field experiments were carried out observe geometry of nets by catcher boats. The obtained results are summarized as follows : The actual ratio of net opening in each part of the half size modified nets was increased from fore part to back part of the nets as shown the smallest value about 20% in wing net and the biggest value about 110% in bag net. In addition, vertical net opening of B-type net as measured as 10.9~11.8m in fore bag net and 5.8~8.0m in after bag net were 1~2m greater than 9.0~13.6m of A-type one, and 2~3m less than 9.3~10.4m of A-type one, respectively. Vertical net opening of half size modified net was shown as less variation of towing depth from wing net to inside wing net than those of traditional nets due to stable vertical performance. The mesh distortion or drift and variation of vertical net opening were decreased by improvement of bag nets in order to minimized shape of net pocket phenomenon whenever towing speed is slow. Bag net B-Type attached with dual flapper was shown as less variation in width of bag net and less escapement of anchovy.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the relationship of the shear behavior and the variety of width, depth and location of an opening in reinforced concrete deep beams with rectangular web openings, and to present an improved shear strength equation of those members. The main parameters considered were concrete strength(fck), shear span-to-overall depth ratio(a/h), and the size and vortical position of the web openings. Twenty five deep beams were tested under two symmetric loading-points. Test results showed that the shear behavior of deep beams with web openings was influenced by a/h and the size of opening. In addition, the KCI shear design provision is a tendency to be more unconservative according to the increase in a/h and the area-ratio of opening to shear span(Ao/Ash). Based on the concrete strut action of top and bottom member of an opening and the tie action of longitudinal reinforcement, a proper design equation which closely predicts the capacity of deep beams with rectangular openings is developed.

  • This study proposes the design method of the shear walls with openings using strut-and-tie models. Strut-and-tie models are constructed for opening near the middle of the wall and for opening near a wall boundary. These enables an admissible load path for the horizontal earthquake force. These models consider the size and position of opening effectively. Each model is suitable for the seismic response corresponding with lateral forces in a given direction to be considered. The proposed models are good agreements with nonlinear finite element analysis(DIANA) results.
