Understanding the thermohydraulic processes in the aquifer is necessary for a proper design of the aquifer thermal energy utilization system under given conditions. Experimental and numerical test were accomplished to evaluate the relationship between the geothermal heat exchanger operation and hydrogeological conditions in the open-loop geothermal system. Sand tank experiments were designed to investigate the open-loop geothermal system. Water injection and extract ion system as open-loop borehole heat exchanger was applied to observe the temperature changes in time at injection well, extraction well and ambient groundwater. The thermohydraulic transfer for heat storage was simulated using FEFLOW for two cases of extraction and injection phase operation in sand tank model. As one case, the movement of the thermal plume was simulated with variable locations of injection and extraction well. As another case, the simulation was performed with fixed location of injection and extraction well. The simulation and experimental results showed that the temperature distribution depends highly on the injected water temperature and the length of injection time and the groundwater flow and pumping rate sensitively affect the heat transfer.

The use of groundwater and ground_heat is one of the ways to use natural and renewable energy, and it has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy-saving. There are a few researches on the optimum design for the open-loop geothermal system. In this study, to develop the optimal design method numerical simulation of the open-loop geothermal system with two-wells was performed by a groundwater and heat transfer model. In this paper, a study was performed to analyze the system performance according to well distance and pumping flow rate. In the result, average heat exchange rate and heat source temperature were calculated and it was found that they were dependent on the pumping rate.

Recently, ground source heat pump systems are being used in buildings for cooling and heating to reduce greenhouse gas and save energy. However, ground source heat pump systems mainly use the vertical closed-loop geothermal system design rather than the open-loop geothermal system design. This is due to a lack of knowledge and few research feasibility studies. In this research, a dynamic thermal analysis numerical simulation based on a standard house model was conducted for an open-loop geothermal system. Based on heating load analysis results, the life cycle costs of a standard house using an open two-well geothermal system were analyzed and compared with a vertical closed-loop geothermal system, and a diesel boiler. As a result, it was found that using an open two-well geothermal system shows economic return on investment after three years.

This paper deals with an optimal output tracking control for open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine. For this purpose, we modeled simplified mathematical model of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine and designed optimal output feedback control system using combustion chamber pressure. For design the closed-loop system of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine, we designed optimal output feedback linear quadratic tracking control system using the linearized model and demonstrated the performance of the controller through numerical simulation.

The groundwater heat pump (GWHP) systems have great potential for heating-cooling system which use annual constant groundwater temperature for heat source. Generally, the performance of GWHP system significantly depends on the geological and hydraulic properties such as hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, soil condition so on. Therefore, in order to use GWHP systems efficiently, it is necessary to analyze the effect of design factors on the system performance. However, there are a few researches on the optimum design method for the open-loop geothermal system. In this research, the design factor in the open-loop geothermal system was analyzed quantitatively for the optimal design method by using numerical simulation. As a result, it was found that the temperature change of heat source depends on the design factor.

This study is focused on the analysis of loop characteristics of stage-discharge relation which is widely used for the production of discharge data and the simulation of loop stage-discharge relation using the numerical model. Analysis of consecutive stage and discharge data at 3 points revealed that loop of stage-discharge relationship is very strong. This means that the existing single stage-discharge relation may include large amount of error. Various flood events are simulated in mainstream of Han river with one-dimensional numerical model. The calculated stage data are compared with measured data. Especially continuous field-flow measurements concurrently collected with an Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meter (ADVM) on Hangang bridge in the case of 2007 flood event are used to verify the model applicability of estimating flows in open channels. This comparison shows that numerical model is an accurate and reliable alternative for making the real stage-discharge relation. Simulation of stage-discharge relation by a numerical model at Paldang and Hangang bridge showed good agreements with measured one, so it may be possible to generate real loop stage-discharge relation with properly calibrated and verified numerical model. It can be concluded that results of this study can contribute to error analysis of conventional single stage-discharge relation and development of loop stage-discharge relation with numerical model.

Groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system can achieve higher performance of the system by utilizing heat source of the annual constant groundwater temperature. The performance of GWHP system depends on the ground thermal environment such as groundwater temperature, groundwater flow rate and hydraulic conductivity. In this study, the geothermal environment was analyzed by using numerical simulation for develop the two-well geothermal system. As the result, this paper shows the change of the groundwater level and underground temperature around wells according to the conditions of flow rate and hydraulic conductivity.

While the vertical open type of heat exchanger is more effective in areas of abundant groundwater, and is becoming more widely used, the heat exchanger most commonly used in geothermal heating and cooling systems in Korea is the vertical closed loop type. In this study, we performed numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties to evaluate the efficiency of the vertical open type in areas of abundant groundwater supply. The first simulation indicated that the vertical open type using groundwater directly is more efficient than the vertical closed loop type in areas of abundant groundwater. Furthermore, a doublet system with separated injection and extraction wells was more efficient because the temperature difference (${\Delta}$) between the injection and extraction water generated by heat exchange with the ground is large. In the second simulation, we performed additional numerical simulations of the optimal utilization of geothermal energy that incorporated heat transfer, distance, flow rate, and groundwater hydraulic gradient targeting a single well, SCW (standing column well), and doublet. We present a flow diagram that can be used to select the optimal type of heat exchanger based on these simulation results. The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to examine the adequacy of the geothermal energy utilization system based on the hydrogeological and thermal properties of the area concerned, and also on a review of the COP (coefficient of performance) of the geothermal heating and cooling system.

The load-following operation of small modular reactors (SMRs) requires accurate prediction of transient behaviors that can occur in the balance of plants (BOP) and the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS). However, 1-D thermal-hydraulics analysis codes developed for safety and performance analysis have conventionally excluded the BOP from the simulation by assuming ideal boundary conditions for the main steam and feed water (MS/FW) systems, i.e., an open loop. In this study, we introduced a lumped model of BOP fluid system and coupled it with NSSS without any ideal boundary conditions, i.e., in a closed loop. Various methods for coupling boundary conditions at MS/FW were tested to validate their combination in terms of minimizing numerical instability, which mainly arises from the coupled boundaries. The method exhibiting the best performance was selected and applied to a transient simulation of an integrated NSSS and BOP system of a SMART. For a transient event with core power change of 100-20-100%, the simulation exhibited numerical stability throughout the system without any significant perturbation of thermal-hydraulic parameters. Thus, the introduced boundary-condition coupling method and BOP fluid system model can expectedly be employed for the transient simulation and performance analysis of SMRs requiring daily load-following operations.
This paper investigates the active damping of grid-connected LCL filter resonance using high-pass filter (HPF) of the grid current. An expression for such HPF is derived in terms of the filter components. This expression facilitates a general study of the actively damped filter behavior in the discrete time domain. Limits for the HPF parameters are derived to avoid the excitation of unstable open loop poles since such excitation can reduce both the damping performance and the system robustness. Based on this study, straightforward co-design steps for the active damping loop along with the fundamental current regulator are proposed. A numerical example along with simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analyses.
