  • The current focus of development in industrial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is integration of CFD into Computer-Aided product development, geometrical optimisation, robust design and similar. On the other hand, in CFD research aims to extend the boundaries of practical engineering use in "non-traditional" areas. Requirements of computational flexibility and code integration are contradictory: a change of coding paradigm, with object orientation, library components, equation mimicking is proposed as a way forward. This paper describes OpenFOAM, a C++ object oriented library for Computational Continuum Mechanics (CCM) developed by the author. Efficient and flexible implementation of complex physical models is achieved by mimicking the form of partial differential equation in software, with code functionality provided in library form. Open Source deployment and development model allows the user to achieve desired versatility in physical modeling without the sacrifice of complex geometry support and execution efficiency.

  • The three dimensional geometries of an aluminum open cell foam before and after uniaxial compressive loading were investigated using the X-ray micro CT(computed tomography). Aluminum 6101-T6 open cell foams of 10, 20, 40 ppi (pore per inch) were considered in this work. After the serial sectioning CT images of aluminum foams were obtained from non-destructive X-ray images, the exact 3D structure were reproduced and visualized with commercial image processing program. The relative density ratio was around the 7.0 to 9.0 range, the unit cells showed anisotropic shapes having the different dimensional ratios of 1.1 to 1.3 between the rise and the transverse directions. The yield stress increased with the relative density ratio and the volumetric strain increased proportionally with compressive strain. The plateau stress in the compressive stress-strain curve was caused by the buckling of ligaments.

  • In this study, a newly enhanced Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model which incorporates mooring lines was used to simulate a floating structure. The model has two parts: a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and a mooring model. The open-source CFD OpenFOAM® v1712 toolbox was used in the present study, and the convergence criteria and relaxation method were added to the computational procedure used for the OpenFOAM multiphase flow solver, interDyMFoam. A newly enhanced, tightly coupled solver, CoupledinterDyMFoam, was used to decrease the artificial added mass effect, and the results were validated through a series of benchmark cases. The mooring model, based on the finite element method, was established in MATLAB® and was validated against a benchmark analytical elastic catenary solution and numerical results. Finally, a model which simulates a floating structure with mooring lines was successfully constructed by connecting the mooring model to CoupledinterDyMFoam.

  • In this paper is presented passive-active noise control in a duct using a ring-type smart foam. The ring-type smart foam is comprised of a PVDF film embedded in elastic noise control foam of lining shape. The embeddedPVDF element acts as an actuator to reduce noise at lower frequencies and the foam absorbs noise at higher frequencies. By implementing an adaptive filtered-x LMS algorithm, experiments are performed to reduce both tonal and broadband noise in a duct with one end closed and the other end open.

  • There are many methods to produce metal foams, which can be classified into three groups according to the state of the starting metal i.e. liquid or powder or solid. Three types of defects such as cell closing, cell deformation or breakdown and cell misrun are thought to be occurred when we make the open cell aluminum foams by precision casting. Filling ability of the mold slurry between preform is related with cell closing, mold collapsibility is related with cell deformation or breakdown, mold temperature and pouring pressure are related with cell misrun. These factors can be evaluated by measuring slurry fluidity, burnout strength and permeability of the mold. Properties of the plaster mold were evaluated to find optimum mold conditions for high quality open cell aluminum foam in this study. Permeability was almost zero independent of burnout conditions, however, crack initiation was found on the surface of all specimens one or two minutes after taking out from the furnace. Crack has grown and disappeared with time. This crack may facilitate the mold filling when molten metal is poured, because of the improved mold permeability. It was considered that crack initiation and disappearance was closely related with temperature difference between the surface and inner part. Knocking-out the mold is a difficult problem due to the small cell size, because continuous mesh structure of the metal foam is not strong. It is not easy to remove molding material after pouring. We can expect that water quenching can facilitate the knocking-out the mold after solidification without damaging cell structures. Collapsed particles after water quenching became bigger with the increase in time.

  • This paper presents a hybrid numerical approach, which combines a two-phase Navier-Stokes model (NS) and the fully nonlinear potential theory (FNPT), for modelling wave-structure interaction. The former governs the computational domain near the structure, where the viscous and turbulent effects are significant, and is solved by OpenFOAM/InterDyMFoam which utilising the finite volume method (FVM) with a Volume of Fluid (VOF) for the phase identification. The latter covers the rest of the domain, where the fluid may be considered as incompressible, inviscid and irrotational, and solved by using the Quasi Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element method (QALE-FEM). These two models are weakly coupled using a zonal (spatially hierarchical) approach. Considering the inconsistence of the solutions at the boundaries between two different sub-domains governed by two fundamentally different models, a relaxation (transitional) zone is introduced, where the velocity, pressure and surface elevations are taken as the weighted summation of the solutions by two models. In order to tackle the challenges associated and maximise the computational efficiency, further developments of the QALE-FEM have been made. These include the derivation of an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian FNPT and application of a robust gradient calculation scheme for estimating the velocity. The present hybrid model is applied to the numerical simulation of a fixed horizontal cylinder subjected to a unidirectional wave with or without following current. The convergence property, the optimisation of the relaxation zone, the accuracy and the computational efficiency are discussed. Although the idea of the weakly coupling using the zonal approach is not new, the present hybrid model is the first one to couple the QALE-FEM with OpenFOAM solver and/or to be applied to numerical simulate the wave-structure interaction with presence of current.

  • Autonomous fire detection and suppression system requires advanced technology for complex detection technology and injection/control technology for accurate hitting by fire location. Also, foam spraying should be included to respond to oil fires. However, when a single spray monitor is used in common, water and foam spray properties appear different, so for accurate fire suppression, research on the spray trajectory and distance will be required. In this study, experimental studies and numerical analysis studies were combined to analyze the foam spray characteristics through the spray monitor developed for the establishment of an autonomous fire extinguishing system. For flow analysis of foam injection, modeling was performed using OpenFOAM analysis software, and the commonly used foaming agent (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) was applied for foam properties. The injection distance analysis was performed according to the injection pressure and the injection angle according to the form of the foam, and at the same time, the results were verified and presented through the injection experiment.

  • This study presented numerical simulations of smooth-bed flows in the rectangular open-channel using the source code by OpenFOAM. For the analysis of the turbulent flow, Large Eddy Simulations were carried out and the dynamic sub-grid scale model proposed by Germano et al. (1991) is used to model the residual stress term. In order to analyze the coherent structure, the uw quadrant method proposed by Lu and Willmarth (1973) is used and the contribution rate and the fraction time of the instantaneous Reynolds stress are obtained in the Reynolds stress. The results by the present study are analyzed and compared with data from previous laboratory studies and direct numerical simulations. It is found that the contribution rate of the ejection events is larger than that of sweep events over the buffer layer in the open-channel flow over the smooth bed, however, the frequency of the sweep event is higher than that of the ejection events.
