펌프장에서 Sump내 흡입구 주위의 유동해석 (Flow Analyses around Intake within Sump in a Pump Station)

  • In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are Investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.

Unfortunately in order to design the sump station, the reasonable code or the standards weren't presented yet in Korea. Thus, some researchers had often referred the HI code, JSME code or CEN code to design the sump station. This study aims to prescribe the standard of sump design which were matched well the Korean pump station. Thus, the HI code and TSJ code would be interpreted fully to Korean language, the part of interpreted clauses of the western codes would be selected to compose the standard.

Twin-skeg형 컨테이너선 주위의 격자계 생성과 유동 해석 (Grid Generation and flow Analysis around a Twin-skeg Container Ship)

  • Twin-skeg type stern shapes are recently adopted for very large commercial ships. However it is difficult to apply a CFD system to a hull form having twin-skeg, since grid topology around a twin-skeg type stern is more complicated than that of a conventional single-screw ship, or of an open-shaft type twin-screw ship with center-skeg. In the present study a surface mesh generator and a multi-block field grid generation program have been developed for twin-skeg type stern. Furthermore, multi-block flow solvers are utilized for potential and viscous flow analysis around a twin-skeg type stern The present computational system is applied to a 15,000TEU container ship with twin-skeg to prove the applicability. Wave profiles and wake distribution are calculated using the developed flow analysis tools and the results are compared with towing tank measurements.

ESTIMATION OF ALUMINUM AND ARGON ACTIVATION SOURCES IN THE HANARO COOLANT

  • The activation products of aluminum and argon are key radionuclides for operational and environmental radiological safety during the normal operation of open-tank-in-pool type research reactors using aluminum-clad fuels. Their activities measured in the primary coolant and pool surface water of HANARO have been consistent. We estimated their sources from the measured activities and then compared these values with their production rates obtained by a core calculation. For each aluminum activation product, an equivalent aluminum thickness (EAT) in which its production rate is identical to its release rate into the coolant is determined. For the argon activation calculation, the saturated argon concentration in the water at the temperature of the pool surface is assumed. The EATs are 5680, 266 and 1.2 nm, respectively, for Na-24, Mg-27 and Al-28, which are much larger than the flight lengths of the respective recoil nuclides. These values coincide with the water solubility levels and with the half-lives. The EAT for Na-24 is similar to the average oxide layer thickness (OLT) of fuel cladding as well; hence, the majority of them in the oxide layer may be released to the coolant. However, while the average OLT clearly increases with the fuel burn-up during an operation cycle, its effect on the pool-top radiation is not distinguishable. The source of Ar-41 is in good agreement with the calculated reaction rate of Ar-40 dissolved in the coolant.

여과형 비점오염 처리장치의 오염물질 제거특성 및 역세척 분석 (The Performance of Pollutant Removal Using Nonpoint Treatment Filtration Device and Analysis of the Filter Backwashing Effect)

  • Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, for its simple design, high capacity, low maintenance and low operational cost. The objective of this study is to develop hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration system. The system is made of hydrocyclone ballasted coagulation with polyaluminium chloride silicate (PACS) and upflow filter to treat micro particles in urban storm runoff. Roadside sediment particles (< $200{\mu}m$) was mixed with tap water to make various turbid suspensions to simulate urban storm runoff. The filter cartridge was filled with polyethylene media system and ran 1hr per everyday and total operation time were 8.19hrs and backwashing everyday after end of operation. The operation condition of flowrate was $8.2{\sim}11.9m^3/day$ (mean $10.1m^3/day$) and surface overflow rate (SOR) based on filter surface area was $45.5{\sim}65.9m^3/m^2/day$ (mean $55.7m^3/m^2/day$). The range of PACS dosage concentration was 14.0~31.5 mg/L. As the results of operation, the range of removal efficiency of turbidity, SS were 81.0~95.8% (mean 89.5%) 81.8~99.0% (mean 91.4%), respectively. An increase of filtration basin retention time brought on increased of removal efficiency of turbidity and SS, and increase of SOR brought on decreased of removal efficiency. During the first flush in urban area, storm runoff have an high concentration of SS (200~600 mg/L) and the filtration bed becomes clogged and decreased of removal efficiency. Backwashing begins when the drainage pipe valve at the filtration tank bottom is completely open (backwashing stage 1). Backwashing stage 2 was using air bubbles and water jet washing the media for 5 mins and open the drainage valve. After backwashing stage 1, 2, 61.83~64.04%, 18.53~27.51% of SS loading was discharged from filtration tank, respectively. Discharged SS loading from effluent was 7.12~14.79% and the range of residual SS loading in fliter was 2.26~5.00%. The backwashing effects for turbidity, SS were 89.5%, 91.4%, respectively. The hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration with backwashing system, which came out to solve the problems of the costly exchange filter media, and low efficiency of removing micro particles of filter type nonpoint treatment devices, is considered as an alternative system.

Energy extraction from the motion of an oscillating water column

  • An Oscillating Water Column (OWC) is a relatively practical and convenient device that converts wave energy to a usable form, which is electricity. The OWC is kept inside a fixed truncated vertical cylinder, which is a hollow structure with one open end submerged in the water and with an air turbine at the top. This research adopts potential theory and Galerkin methods to solve the fluid motion inside the OWC. Using an air-water interaction model, OWC design for energy extraction from regular wave is also explored. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the scattering and radiation potentials are solved for using the Galerkin approximation. The numerical results for the free surface elevation have been verified by a series of experiments conducted in the University of New Orleans towing tank. The effect of varying geometric parameters on the response amplitude operator (RAO) of the OWC is studied and modification of the equation for evaluating the natural frequency of the OWC is made. Using the model of air-water interaction under certain wave parameters and OWC geometric parameters, a computer program is developed to calculate the energy output from the system.

Numerical investigation of solitary wave interaction with a row of vertical slotted piles on a sloping beach

  • To improve our current understanding of tsunami-like solitary waves interacting with a row of vertical slotted piles on a sloping beach, a 3D numerical wave tank based on the CFD tool $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was developed in this study. The Navier-Stokes equations were employed to solve the two-phase incompressible flow, combining with an improved VOF method to track the free surface and a LES model to resolve the turbulence. The numerical model was firstly validated by our laboratory measurements of wave, flow and dynamic pressure around both a row of piles and a single pile on a slope subjected to solitary waves. Subsequently, a series of numerical experiments were conducted to analyze the breaking wave force in view of varying incident wave heights, offshore water depths, spaces between adjacent piles and beach slopes. Finally, a slamming coefficient was discussed to account for the breaking wave force impacting on the piles.

하나로 1차 냉각펌프 제염에 대한 고찰 (Study on the Decontamination of Primary Cooling Pump in HANARO)

  • 30 MW의 연구용 원자로인 하나로는 1995년 2월 초임계에 도달한 이후, 정상적으로 가동하고 있다. 가동 후 약 10년이 경과하여 1차 냉각펌프를 분해 점검하기 위해 펌프에 대한 화학제염이 2004년에 수행되었다. 제염을 수행하기 이전에 4개의 point를 설정하여 방사선량율 및 표면오염도를 측정하였고, 최종제염이 수행된 이후 같은 point에 대하여 방사선량율 및 표면오염도를 재측정 하였다. 펌프 외부는 노출되어 있어 쉽게 제염할 수 있으나 케이싱 내부에는 2중 볼류트가 있어 접근이 용이하지 않았다. 이를 제염하기 위하여 제염장치를 개발하였다. 이 장치는 일정 농도의 제염제 (DX-300)를 케이싱 내부에 담아 밀폐시킨 후 펌프의 임펠러를 저속으로 회전함으로서 제염제가 순환된다. 제염제의 유화작용에 의해 표면의 입자성 방사선 물질이 이완되고, 화학 작용에 의해 부식력과 용해성으로 표면 오염이 제거된다. 이 장치를 이용하여 하나로 1차 냉각펌프의 케이싱 내부를 제염하였다. 그 결과 1차 냉각펌프의 케이싱 내부는 반출허용표면오염도 이하로 낮출 수 있어 성공적으로 제염할 수 있었다.

Study on the procedure to obtain an attainable speed in pack ice

  • The cost evaluation for voyage route planning in an ice-covered sea is one of the major topics among ship owners. Information of the ice properties, such as ice type, concentration of ice, ice thickness, strength of ice, and speed-power relation under ice conditions are important for determining the optimal route in ice and low operational cost perspective. To determine achievable speed at any designated pack ice condition, a model test of resistance, self-propulsion, and overload test in ice and ice-free water were carried out in a KRISO ice tank and towing tank. The available net thrust for ice and an estimation of the ice resistance under any pack ice condition were also performed by I-RES. The in-house code called 'I-RES', which is an ice resistance estimation tool that applies an empirical formula, was modified for the pack ice module in this study. Careful observations of underwater videos of the ice model test made it possible to understand the physical phenomena of underneath of the hull bottom surface and determine the coverage of buoyancy. The clearing resistance of ice can be calculated by subtracting the buoyance and open water resistance form the pre-sawn ice resistance. The model test results in pack ice were compared with the calculation results to obtain a correlation factor among the pack ice resistance, ice concentration, and ship speed. The resulting correlation factors were applied to the calculation results to determine the pack ice resistance under any pack ice condition. The pack ice resistance under the arbitrary pack ice condition could be estimated because software I-RES could control all the ice properties. The available net thrust in ice, which is the over thrust that overcomes the pack ice resistance, will change the speed of a ship according to the bollard pull test results and thruster characteristics (engine & propulsion combination). The attainable speed at a certain ice concentration of pack ice was determined using the interpolation method. This paper reports a procedure to determine the attainable speed in pack ice and the sample calculation using the Araon vessel was performed to confirm the entire process. A more detailed description of the determination of the attainable speed is described. The attainable speed in 1.0 m, 90% pack ice and 540 kPa strength was 13.3 knots.

하나로 2차 냉각탑의 냉각팬 감속기의 진동분석 (Vibration Analysis of a Cooling Fan Gear Reducer of the Secondary Cooling Tower in HANARO)

  • 하나로는 한국에 설치되어 있는 열출력 30MW의 개방 수조형 연구로 이다. 이는 발전로와 달리 원자로에서 발생하는 열을 이용하여 전기를 생산하는 것 대신에 원자로의 노심 온도를 유지하기 위하여 냉각탑을 통해 대기로 이 열을 냉각한다. 냉각탑 월간 점검 중에 냉각탑 4번의 냉각팬 감속기가 기준을 상회하는 고진동을 기록하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 고진동의 원인을 찾아 정상적으로 수리하기 위함이다. 연구 방법은 FFT 스펙트럼 기법을 적용하여 고진동의 원인을 분석하였다. 그 결과 고진동 주파수는 피니언 기어의 고유 진동수의 두 배인 354Hz이었다. 피니언 기어를 점검한 결과 이빨 표면이 깨져 있었다. 깨진 피니언 기어를 제거하고 새것으로 교체한 후에는 감속기는 정상적으로 작동하였다.
