Scalable RDFS Reasoning using Logic Programming Approach in a Single Machine (단일머신 환경에서의 논리적 프로그래밍 방식 기반 대용량 RDFS 추론 기법)

  • As the web of data is increasingly producing large RDFS datasets, it becomes essential in building scalable reasoning engines over large triples. There have been many researches used expensive distributed framework, such as Hadoop, to reason over large RDFS triples. However, in many cases we are required to handle millions of triples. In such cases, it is not necessary to deploy expensive distributed systems because logic program based reasoners in a single machine can produce similar reasoning performances with that of distributed reasoner using Hadoop. In this paper, we propose a scalable RDFS reasoner using logical programming methods in a single machine and compare our empirical results with that of distributed systems. We show that our logic programming based reasoner using a single machine performs as similar as expensive distributed reasoner does up to 200 million RDFS triples. In addition, we designed a meta data structure by decomposing the ontology triples into separate sectors. Instead of loading all the triples into a single model, we selected an appropriate subset of the triples for each ontology reasoning rule. Unification makes it easy to handle conjunctive queries for RDFS schema reasoning, therefore, we have designed and implemented RDFS axioms using logic programming unifications and efficient conjunctive query handling mechanisms. The throughputs of our approach reached to 166K Triples/sec over LUBM1500 with 200 million triples. It is comparable to that of WebPIE, distributed reasoner using Hadoop and Map Reduce, which performs 185K Triples/sec. We show that it is unnecessary to use the distributed system up to 200 million triples and the performance of logic programming based reasoner in a single machine becomes comparable with that of expensive distributed reasoner which employs Hadoop framework.

Clustering and Pattern Analysis for Building Semantic Ontologies in RESTful Web Services (RESTful 웹 서비스에서 시맨틱 온톨로지를 구축하기 위한 클러스터링 및 패턴 분석 기법)

  • With the advent of Web 2.0, the use of RESTful web services is expected to overtake that of the traditional SOAP-based web services. Recently, the growing number of RESTful web services available on the web raises the challenging issue of how to locate the desired web services. However, the existing keyword searching method is insufficient for the bad recall and the bad precision. In this paper, we propose a novel building semantic ontology method which employs both the clustering technique based on association rules and the semantic analysis technique based on patterns. From this method, we can generate ontologies automatically, reduce the burden of semantic annotations, and support more efficient web services search. We ran our experiments on the subset of 168 RESTful web services downloaded from the PregrammableWeb site. The experimental results show that our method achieves up to 35% improvement for recall performance, and up to 18% for precision performance compared to the existing keyword searching method.

Development of Methodology for Automated Office Room Generation Based on Space Utilization (공간 사용률 기반 오피스 실 생성 자동화 방법론 개발)

  • Many efforts are being made to enhance user productivity and promote collaboration while ensuring the economic efficiency of office buildings. Analyzing space utilization, indicating how users utilize spaces, has been a crucial factor in these efforts. Appropriate space utilization enhances building maintenance and space layout design, reducing unnecessary energy waste and under-occupied spaces. Recognizing the importance of space utilization, there have been several studies to predict space utilization using information about users, activities, and spaces. These studies suggested an ontology of the information and implemented automated activity-space mapping as part of space utilization prediction. Despite the existing studies, there remains a gap in integrating space utilization prediction with automated space layout design. As a foundational study to bridge this gap, our study proposes a novel methodology that automatically generates office rooms based on space utilization optimization. This methodology consists of three modules: Activity-space mapping, Space utilization calculation, and Room generation. The first two modules use data on space types and user activity types as input to calculate and optimize space utilization through requirement-based activity-space mapping. After optimizing the space utilization value within an appropriate range, the number and area of each space type are determined. The Room generation module then automatically generates rooms with optimized areas and numbers. The practical application of the developed methodology is demonstrated, highlighting its effectiveness in fabricated case scenario. By automatically generating rooms with optimal space utilization, our methodology shows potential for expanding to automated generation of optimized space layout design based on space utilization.

An integrated Bayesian network framework for reconstructing representative genetic regulatory networks.

  • In this paper, we propose the integrated Bayesian network framework to reconstruct genetic regulatory networks from genome expression data. The proposed model overcomes the dimensionality problem of multivariate analysis by building coherent sub-networks from confined gene clusters and combining these networks via intermediary points. Gene Shaving algorithm is used to cluster genes that share a common function or co-regulation. Retrieved clusters incorporate prior biological knowledge such as Gene Ontology, pathway, and protein protein interaction information for extracting other related genes. With these extended gene list, system builds genetic sub-networks using Bayesian network with MDL score and Sparse Candidate algorithm. Identifying functional modules of genes is done by not only microarray data itself but also well-proved biological knowledge. This integrated approach can improve there liability of a network in that false relations due to the lack of data can be reduced. Another advantage is the decreased computational complexity by constrained gene sets. To evaluate the proposed system, S. Cerevisiae cell cycle data [1] is applied. The result analysis presents new hypotheses about novel genetic interactions as well as typical relationships known by previous researches [2].

  • 서술논리를 기반으로 하는 OWL 온톨로지는 표준화된 형식적 언어로써 실세계의 도메인 지식을 표현하는데 적합하다. 따라서 논리를 바탕으로 명시적으로 정의된 지식 속에 내재되어 있는 새로운 지식의 추론이 가능하다. 그러나 OWL이 가지는 Open World Assumption(OWA)의 특성은 근거가 불완전하거나 완전한 정보획득이 불가능한 상황에서의 추론을 제한한다. 더불어 OWL이 가지는 또 다른 특성으로 Unique Name Assumption(UNA)의 비지원은 실제적 지식표현을 지원하는 반면, 표현의 불충분으로 인해 결과 도출의 불능을 야기한다. 이러한 특징을 고려하여, 본 논문에서는 지능형 에이전트 구성을 위한 서술논리 기반 지식 표현 방법을 제안한다. 이는 논리적 정당성을 유지하고 올바른 결과를 이끌어 낼 수 있도록 하며, 항상 논리적 결론 도출이 가능한 지식모델을 구성할 수 있도록 돕는다. 이를 통해, 지식모델에 정의된 불완전한 개념에 있어서 OWL이 가지는 특징으로 인하여 발생할 수 있는 문제점에 대한 해결방안을 제시한다. 이에 있어서, 모바일 온톨로지의 예를 통하여 OWA와 UNA에 따른 추론의 제약을 보이며, 이를 해결할 수 있는 방안을 논리적으로 표현함으로써 본 제안의 정당성을 증명한다.

  • 1990년대 중반부터 최근까지 시맨틱 웹에 대한 많은 관심과 더불어 많은 연구가 진행중이다. 무한한 정보 자원을 가지고 있는 인터넷에서 자원에 대한 효율적 처리가 더욱더 강조된다. 그렇지만 시맨틱 웹에 대한 뚜렷한 결론을 내리기 힘들뿐만 아니라, 지금의 연구들에서는 시맨틱 웹에 대한 전체적 구상에 치중하고 있을 뿐, 세부적인 기술에 관한 연구는 미흡하다 최근까지의 연구의 초점은 주로 XML, XML Schema에서 RDF, RDF Schema 그리고 DAML+OIL에 이르기까지 다양한 마크업 언어의 개발 및 적용에 대한 연구이다. 이러한 연구의 결과 시맨틱 웹에서의 표현을 위한 마크업 언어에 대한 많은 성과를 가져왔지만, 시맨틱 웹의 핵심이 되는 정보의 의미적 표현은 더 많은 연구들이 요구된다. 본 논문은 시맨틱 웹의 핵심적인 부분을 차지하고 있는 온톨로지에 대한 연구이다. 최근 널리 사용되어지고 있는 온톨로지 중 하나인 WordNet을 시맨틱 웹의 온톨로지로 적용함에 있어, 발생하는 문제점을 해결하기 위한 방법을 제시한다. WordNet에 기반 한 도메인 온톨로지의 구축 및 적용에 대한 내용이 이 문제점을 해결하기 위한 본 논문의 요지이다.

  • In architectural design, the user is one of the most important factors for the design task as well as the standard for evaluating the value of the built environment after its construction. Recently, accidents, such as fires and breakdowns, in huge and complicated buildings have increased the importance of user behavior simulation. The Korean government has tried to establish a regulation for the prevention of accidents in the built environment. This is regarded as a significant step forward for providing a safer and more appropriate environment for users. However, the existing technologies related to analyzing user behavior only simulate simplified situations. Such simulations are not enough to evaluate accurately the designed alternatives because buildings and spaces contain more complicated information than what we have conventionally considered. Thus, we propose that the advanced agent can interact with the architectural context. It can understand not only the physical situation but also how the users affect this situation. In order to realize this, we adopted the concept of affordances as the perceived action possibilities for the simulation environment.

Image-Centric Integrated Data Model of Medical Information by Diseases: Two Case Studies for AMI and Ischemic Stroke

  • In the medical fields, many efforts have been made to develop and improve Hospital Information System (HIS) including Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Order Communication System (OCS), and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). However, materials generated and used in medical fields have various types and forms. The current HISs separately store and manage them by different systems, even though they relate to each other and contain redundant data. These systems are not helpful particularly in emergency where medical experts cannot check all of clinical materials in the golden time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a process to build an integrated data model for medical information currently stored in various HISs. The proposed data model integrates vast information by focusing on medical images since they are most important materials for the diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, the model is disease-specific to consider that medical information and clinical materials including images are different by diseases. Two case studies show the feasibility and the usefulness of our proposed data model by building models about two diseases, acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and ischemic stroke.

  • 현재 온톨로지는 많은 분야에서 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 특히 시맨틱 웹에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어 지면서 온톨로지의 활용 범위가 넓어졌다. 그 결과, 많은 온톨로지가 웹 상에 존재하게 되었으며, 이러한 이론적 배경으로 시맨틱 웹의 관점이 아닌, 온톨로지 연구의 측면에서 여러 가지 문제가 발생하게 되었다. 많은 문제들 중에서 동일한 도메인에 대한 온톨로지들 간의 이질성과 온톨로지의 일관성 문제 해결은 현재 가장 이슈가 되는 내용들이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이러한 온톨로지 구축에서 발생하는 문제점들 중에서 기존의 지식 정보의 효율적인 재사용과 그에 기반한 온톨로지 구축 자동화의 가능성을 보인다. 또 이러한 기존 지식 체계에 기반함으로써 얻을수 있는 온톨로지에 대한 신뢰성의 문제 또한 해결하고 한다. 그리하여, 우리는 범용의 대형 온톨로지인 워드넷을 기반으로 한 자동 온톨로지 구축을 위한 방법론을 제안하고, 이를 적용한 온톨로지 자동 구축 시스템을 설계하고 구현하였다. 그리하여 사용자가 좀더 쉽게 온톨로지를 구축할 수 있기를 기대할 수 있다.

A Study on the Meaning of Technology in Louis I. Kahn's Architecture (루이스 칸 건축에 있어서 테크놀로지의 의미에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to review the meaning of technologies in the works of Louis I. Kahn. Kahn's main architectural thoughts of 'what it wants to be' and 'how it was done' are important in this research because these statements represent the ontology of his architecture and tectonic characteristics. These divisions also can be effective in studying relationship between technology and his architecture. 'What it wants to be' means the essence and existence of architecture and 'how it was done' shows the tectonic of architecture and construction process to enhance its presence. Kahn used technology as solutions for partial problems in his early years but later he changed its role as media to realize his concept ideally. He considered technology as enhancing building's existence rather than its functional and economical efficiency. Kahn also visualize the usage of technology through detail and construction process. He developed his technology in 'application-modification-complement' process as he executed projects over again. As a result, technology itself cannot drive Kahn's architectural thoughts in a certain way but Kahn emphasized technology as media to enhance the presence of his architecture and to present visualization and realization of his concepts.
