  • Batch sorption experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption characteristics of $^{137}$ Cs, known for the primary target of safety assessment in low-level radwaste disposal, onto domestic rocks such as Granite and Tuff. A response surface analysis method was applied to quantify the effect of 3 independent variables ([Cs], [Vol/Wt], [pH]) on the sorption. Ac a result, initial Cs concentration appeared to be the most important variable within the range of the study. A significant effect of [Vol/Wt] on Kd was observed. The sorption of Cs was pH-insignificant. The sorption extent of nuclides onto tuff was more significant than that onto granite. The pH-insignificant sorption behavior of Cs was discussed in terms of the surface electrical properties and the solution chemistry. The sorption tendency of nuclides onto geomedia studied was interpreted by adopting the water structure modification theory.

  • Cesium (Cs) generated by nuclear accidents is one of the most hazardous radionuclides because of its gamma radiation and long half-life. Especially, when Cs is exposed on the soil environments, Cs is mainly adsorbed on the topsoil and is strongly combined with tiny soil particle including clay minerals. The adsorption of Cs onto soil can vary depending on various physicochemical properties of soil. In this study, the adsorption characteristics between soil and Cs were investigated according to various physicochemical properties of soil including organic matter contents, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil particle size, and the types of clay minerals. Soil organic matter inhibited the adsorption of Cs onto the soil because organic matter was blocking the soil surface. In addition, it was estimated that the CEC of the soil influenced the adsorption of Cs onto the soil. Moreover, more Cs was adsorbed as the soil particles size decreased. It was estimated that Cs was mostly adsorbed onto the topsoil, this is related to the clay mineral. Therefore, soil organic matter, CEC, soil particle size, and clay minerals are considered the key factors that can influence the adsorption characteristics between soil and Cs.

  • This study conducted the gamma ray spectroscopic analysis of the microcolumnar CsI:Tl deposited onto the SiPMs using thermal evaporation deposition. The SEM measured thickness of microcolumnar CsI:Tl and of its individual columns. From the SEM observation, the measured thickness of CsI:Tl were $450{\mu}m$ and $600{\mu}m$. The gamma ray spectroscopic properties of microcolumnar CsI:Tl, $450{\mu}m$ and $600{\mu}m$ thick deposited onto the SiPMs were analyzed using standard gamma ray sources $^{133}Ba$ and $^{137}Cs$. The spectroscopic analysis of microcolumnar CsI:Tl deposited onto the SiPMs included the measurements of response linearity over the $^{137}Cs$ gamma ray intensity; and gamma ray energy spectrum. Furthermore from the gamma ray spectrum measurement of $^{133}Ba$ and $^{137}Cs$, $450{\mu}m$ thick CsI:Tl showed good efficiency when measured with $^{133}Ba$ and $600{\mu}m$ thick CsI:Tl was highly efficient when measured with $^{137}Cs$.

  • The adsorption of Cs-137 and Sr-90 onto kaolinite in prescence of major groundwater cations (Ca2+, K+, Na+) with different concentrations was simulated by using triple-layer surface complexation model (TL-SCM). The site density (8.73 sites/nm2) of kaolinite used for TL-SCM was calculated from it's CEC and specific surface area. TL-SCM modeling results indicate that concentrations dependence on 137Cs and 90Sr adsorption onto kaolinite as a function of pH is best modeled as an outer-sphere surface reaction. This suggests that Cs+ and Sr2+ are adsorbed at the $\beta$-layer in kaolinite-water interface where the electrolytes, Nacl, KCl and CaCl2, bind. However, TL-SCM results on Sr adsorption show a discrepancy between batch data and fitting data in alkaline condition. This may be due to precipitation of SrCO3 and complexation such as SrOH+. Intrinsic reaction constants of ions obtained from model fit are as follows: Kintcs=10-2.10, KintSr=10-2.30, KintK=10-2.80, KintCa=10-3.10 and KintNa=10-3.32. The results are in the agreement with competition order among groundwater ions (K+>Ca2+>Na+) and sorption reference of nuclides (Cs-137>Sr-90) at kaolinite-water interface showed in batch test.

  • Safrolechitosan (SaCs) and eugenolchitosan (EuCs) were synthesized and characterized to increase water solubility and functionality of chitosan. Product impurities were removed by Soxhlet apparatus using methanol to obtain final product with high purity. Using Ubbelohde viscometer, molecular weights of chitosan, EuCs, and SaCs were determined as $1.2{\times}10^{5}\;Da,\;7.8{\times}10^{5},\;and\;7.5{\times}10^{5}\;Da,\;respectively$. IR spectrum of SaCs revealed chemical shift of amide II band ($1,553cm^{-1}$) of chitosan grafted by safrole caused by generation of covalent bond between primary amino of chitosan and double bond of safrole. Due to graft reaction of safrole onto chitosan, vinyl bands ($1,611\;and\;1,442cm^{-1}$) of safrole disappeared. In graft reaction of eugenol onto chitosan, shift of amide II band ($1,553cm^{-1}$) and disappearance of vinyl band were observed. On $^{1}H-NMR$ spectrum of EuCs, $H_{2}C=CH-$ peak in eugenol (monomer) disappeared, whereas $-H_{2}C-CH_{2}-$ peak appeared. Above results indicate safrole and eugenol were successfully grafted onto chitosan.

  • Thermodynamic sorption modeling can enhance confidence in assessing and demonstrating the radionuclide sorption phenomena onto various mineral adsorbents. In this work, Ca-montmorillonite was successfully purified from Bentonil-WRK bentonite by performing the sequential physical and chemical treatments, and its geochemical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, cesium-saturation method, and controlled continuous acid-base titration. Further, batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorption properties of Cs(I) and Sr(II) onto the homoionic Ca-montmorillonite under ambient conditions, and the diffuse double layer model-based inverse analysis of sorption data was performed to establish the relevant surface reaction models and obtain corresponding thermodynamic constants. Two types of surface reactions were identified as responsible for the sorption of Cs(I) and Sr(II) onto Ca-montmorillonite: cation exchange at interlayer site and complexation with edge silanol functionality. The thermodynamic sorption modeling provides acceptable representations of the experimental data, and the species distributions calculated using the resulting reaction constants accounts for the predominance of cation exchange mechanism of Cs(I) and Sr(II) under the ambient aqueous conditions. The surface complexation of cationic fission products with silanol group slightly facilitates their sorption at pH > 8.

  • By grafting acrylic acid, fumalic acid and maleic acid onto chitosan, graft copolymers, CsAa, CsFa and CsMa, respectively were prepared for potential uses as flocculants in waste water treatment. When 40 ppm of each grafted chitosan sample was added into the waste water, CsMa showed the best removal rate of COD and suspended solids(SS), followed by CsFa and CsAa and chitosan. The transmittance and removal rate of COD and SS were the highest at pH 5. All grafted chitosan exhibited better performance than chitosan itself, resulting from the amphiphilic property of grafted chitosan copolymer with carboxy groups.

  • Numbers of research on ontology construction and its application are being done for knowledge and information processing using computers. But, the current ontology development methods and ontology construction tools are using in restricted field on propose. Therefore, proper ontology development processes and ontology construction tools on ontology characteristic are needed. In this paper, we propose ontology construction process(OntoProcess) that non-experts in specific field are able to construct ontology through conceptualization of knowledge and formalization of concepts from language resource. Beside, some problems may be occurred while numbers of people are working together to construct ontology: i)duplicated concept definition in conceptualization process of knowledge and ii)decreasing efficiency of ontology construction by short understanding about formal language and tool operation in formalization process. To solve the problems, we propose an ontology construction process for multiple developers (OntoProcess) using meta ontology. We develop an ontology construction system(OntoCS) based on proposed processes, and we show the efficiency of proposed processes and system from ontology construction experiment.

  • CS molecule is known to be adsorbed onto dust in cold dense cores, causing its significant depletion in the center region of cores. This study is aimed to investigate the depletion of CS molecule with optically thin $C^{34}S$ molecular line observations, including significance of its differentiation depending on the evolutionary status of the dense cores. We mapped five evolved starless cores, L1544, L1552, L1689B, L694-2 and L1197 using two molecular lines, $C^{34}S$ (J=2-1) and $N_2H^+$ (J=1-0) with NRO 45 m telescope. The $H^2$ column density and temperature structures of each targets were obtained by SED fitting for Herschel continuum images and the internal number density profiles by model fitting. All of the integrated intensity maps of $C^{34}S$ show depletion holes and 'semi-ring-like' distribution, indicating that the depletion of CS is clear and general. The radial profiles of CS abundance also show significant decrease towards the core center, while $N_2H^+$ abundance is almost constant or enhanced. We find that the more evolved cores with higher $H^2$ density tend to have a stronger depletion of CS. Our data strongly support claims that CS molecule generally depletes out in the central regions of starless dense cores and such chemical differentiation is closely related to their evolution.
