  • The onset time of sea breeze at Haeundae is faster than that at Suyoung in spite of the observation site at Suyoung being 5m and that of Haeundae being 1 km away from the coastline. We therefore simulate the effects of terrain on the onset time of sea breeze at Suyoung and Haeundae districts by using the LCM(Local Circulation Model). This phenomenon is due to the nighttime density flow, which is created by nighttime radiative cooling. It follows the slope of the highlands surrounding the urban area, gathers at a central area of Busan, and then flows out to a lower area like Suyoung river. This process continues after sunrise. In researching the AWS wind speed, we find an important thing. That is to say, the nighttime mean wind speed at Suyoung is three times greater than that at Haeundae. This property shows that Suyoung is an outflow channel of nighttime air mass. The above observed data shows that terrain effect has a important role on the onset of sea breeze.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare modified sling exercise and general isometric exercise in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. Methods: Twenty subjects were studied. The control group, n1 = 10, received instructions for doing general isometric (ISO) exercise. An experimental group, n2 = 10, received instructions for doing push-ups from standing and sitting positions and modified scapular exercises using a sling (3 sets, 3 times per week for 6 weeks). To evaluate the effects of exercise, subjects were evaluated using a visual analog scale for pain, a goniometer for range of motion, and electromyography for onset time of muscle contraction. Statistical analysis was done using the Wilcoxon Signed rank and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Pain in the sling group was significantly decreased after 6 weeks of treatment (p<0.05) pain in the general ISO exercise group was not significantly decreased (p>0.05). Flexion and external rotation were significantly increased after 6 weeks of treatment in both groups (p<0.05) and the change in the Sling group was greater than in the ISO group (p<0.05) in the flexion test. Time of onset of contractions in the Sling group for the upper trapezius, lower trapezius and serratus muscle were significantly decreased after 6 weeks of treatment (p<0.05), but the onset time for the middle trapezius did not significantly decrease (p>0.05). Conclusion: Scapular stabilizing exercise using a sling increases range of motion and decreases pain, and onset time of muscle contraction in patients with impingement syndrome.

  • This study examines the acoustic characteristics of Korean stops of two dialects, Seoul and Kyungsang, focusing on VOT(Voice Onset Time). 8 speakers of these two dialects were asked to read 590 words which contain the stops of different places of articulation and phonation types. The results showed that overall the VOTs of Kyungsang dialect were shorter than those of Seoul dialect. This was more prominent in lenis stops than in fortis or aspirated stops. It was also shown that there were significant VOT overlapping differences between the two dialects.

  • A new picking algorithm has been developed on real-time basis for finding the onset of P wave as well as discriminating the micro seismic signal from artificial noise. Unlike the previous methods which have used the STA/LTA ratio for discriminating the P arrivals, we have adopted the slope discrimination methods for identifying the P onset. As result, this algorithm has been turned out to be efficient in both accuracy and computation in on-line system.

  • Proper motion of sunspots in several active regions was studied to detect their indicator on flare onset, using data from the Solar Flare Telescope at Mitaka (four flaring active regions), TRACE (e.g. NOAA 0424, M1.7 flare on 5 Aug. 2003) and Hinode (e.g. NOAA 10930, X3.4 flare on 13 Dec. 2006). The proper motion of individual sunspots was derived using a local correlation tracking method. As a result, we found that the sunspots that are located under or close to a part of chromospheric flaring patches showed a change in their moving direction prior to the flare onset. The change in their movements took place a half to two hours before the flare onset. On the other hand, sunspots in non-flaring areas or non-flaring active regions did not show this kind of change. It is likely, therefore, that if a sunspot shows the particular movement, a chromospheric flare is to occur in its nearby region. In the most active regions, the part of flare ribbons was located on an emerging bipolar pair of sunspots. The disturbance in the usual motion of the bipolar sunspots and in other sunspots as well can be interpreted as a sign of magnetic shear development leading to final magnetic energy buildup before its sudden release. We suggest that the change in sunspot motion in a short time scale prior to the flare onset can be regarded as a good indicator in predicting the onset timing and location of chromospheric flares.

  • The definition of onset date of Changma is revisited in this study using a quality controlled Ieodo ocean research station data. The Ieodo station has great importance in terms of its southwest location from Korean Peninsula and, hence, makes it possible to predict Changma period in advance with less impact of continents. The onset date of Changma using the Ieodo station data is defined by the time that meridional wind direction changes and maintains from northerly to southerly, and then the zonal wind changes from easterly to westerly after first June. This definition comes from a recognition that the establishment and movement of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) cause Changma through southwesterly flow. The onset data of Changma has been determined by large-scale dynamic-thermodynamic characteristics or various meteorological station data. However, even the definition based on circulation data at the Ieodo station has a potential for the improved prediction skill of the onset date of Changma. The differences between before and after Changma, defined as Ieodo station data, are also found in synoptic chart. The convective instability and conspicuous circulations, corresponding low-level southwesterly flow related to WNPSH and strong upper-level zonal wind, are represented during Changma.

  • The onset characteristics of friction-induced noise for a steel plate and 4 metallic pins (Cu, Ni, Al, Mg) were studied through the pin-on-disk machine and the reciprocating testing machine. The results showed that the negative slope of the friction curve was related to the onset time of friction noise. Particularly, Cu was found to be the best metallic material for preventing squeak noise in terms of the onset time and the negative friction slope.

  • During fertilization, morphological and molecular events in male and female chromatin are precisely controlled in time. However, little information is available on onset of pronuclear formation and first S-phase entry in the pig following intracytoplasmic sperm injection. To assess species specific paternal effect on the pronuclear formation and initiation of first S-phase in the pig, we examined time of onset of male and female pronuclear formation and onset of DNA synthesis in the oocytes following pig or mouse sperm injection. • This study was conducted to identify the proper analytical conditions regarding optical density for endotoxin analysis in the workplace using metalworking fludis. Our study found the "onset method" was more accurate than "time to Vmax" Reproducibility and accuracy analyzed by "onset method" was more greater than those by "time to Vmax""0.03"of optical density was the most appropriate analytical condition among onset method. Through this analytical condition, 0.998 of linearity was obtained and recovery rate ranged from 88% to 105% at endotoxin concentration below 5 EU/$m\ell$. No significant difference of endotoxins between "0.03"and "0.05" of optical density was observed from this study. Furthermore, correlation coefficients between them were statistically significant(p<0.01). This study concluded that 0.03”or "0.05" of optical density is used to analyze endotoxin. Of these optical density value, value with higher linearity should be used to analyze endotoxin in environmental samples.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle onset time of sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and rectus abdominalis (RA) muscle activity during head lift in supine position between cerebral palsy and healthy children. Ten cerebral palsy children and 10 age, sex-matched healthy children were recruited for this study. Muscle activity of the SCM and RA were collected by surface electromyography (MP100SWS). Results demonstrated that the muscle onset time order was not significantly different between cerebral palsy children and healthy children. However, the DMHT and ST between SCM and RA during head lift in supine position were significantly shorter in healthy children than in cerebral palsy children. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanism of differences in muscle activation patterns during head lift in supine position in cerebral palsy children compared with healthy children.
