The Credibility of Online Book Review on Customer's Purchasing Decision (온라인 북 리뷰 공신력의 구매 수용자 의사결정에 미치는 영향)

  • A book review is one of the most important sources of information which provide the descriptive and evaluative contents about books. Reviews have great influence on consumer behavior because they are believed to be more reliable than information provided by sellers. Readers who read a book review includes information about book decide whether they will buy or not. This study examines customer attitude change by book reviews with regarding to different type of information sources(experts and prior customers) and different directions of messages. We address the following research questions: (1) Can positive book reviews with credibility have a positive impact on acceptance of books? (2) Can negative book reviews with credibility have a negative impact on acceptance of books? The results shows that a credibility is an essential factor for affecting customers' mind. When positive book reviews were written, both expert and customer opinions have a positive impact on acceptance of customers. Given negative book reviews of experts, trustworthiness is more important than expertise. However, a objectivity of customer's reviews is more important.

Which is More Important in Useful Online Review? Heuristic-Systematic Model Perspective (유용한 온라인 리뷰에서 어느 것이 더 중요한가? 휴리스틱-체계적 모델 관점)

  • Hotel consumers tend to rely on online reviews to reduce the risk to hotel products when they book hotel rooms because hotel products are high-risk products due to their intangibility. However, the development of ICT has caused information load, and it is an important issue to be perceived as useful information to consumer because a large amount of information complicates the decision making process of consumers. Drawn from Heuristic-Systematic Model(HSM), the present study explored the role of heuristic and systematic cues composing an online review influencing consumers' perception of hotel online reviews. More specifically, this study identified reviewers' identity, level of the reviewer, review star ratings, and attached hotel photo as heuristic cue, while review length, cognitive level of review and negativity in review as systematic cues. The binary logistic regression was adopted for analysis. This study found that only systematic cues of online review were found to affect the usefulness of it. Moreover, we preceded further study examining the moderating effect of seasonality in the relationships between systematic cues and usefulness.

The Effects of Online Product Reviews on Sales Performance: Focusing on Number, Extremity, and Length

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of customer's communication on sales performance in the online market. Research design, data, and methodology - This study uses linear regression analysis to examine the effects of product review characteristics which are the result of customer's communication, on sales performance by using product reviews of online marketplace Amazon. Result - The increase in the number of product reviews positively affected sales performance. An increase in extreme opinions in the product review has a positive effect on sales performance. The product review length has a negative effect on sales performance. Conclusions - This study has shown the online marketplace customers' communication can influence sales performance using product review big data. This study contributed to the theoretical completeness by analyzing all the products of the book category in Amazon online market. This research will complement the theories regard to the customer behavior affecting sales performance. We expect the empirical analysis result will provide empirical help to sellers, online marketplace operators, and customers. In particular, the number of letters in the product may negatively affect sales performance, so sellers need to consider this effect carefully when exposing product reviews.

An Analysis of Online Readers' Advisory Services Offered by Public Libraries (공공도서관의 온라인 독자상담 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the rapid advancement of information technology and changes in the reading environment, the readers' advisory services provided by public libraries are facing challenges and opportunities. Recognizing the need for public libraries to respond and propel their services forward, this study analyzed the current status of online readers' advisory services offered by public libraries in Korea and discusses areas that require improvement. To achieve this, the study analyzed the online readers' advisory services in 50 public libraries located in Seoul and six metropolitan cities (Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, Busan, and Ulsan) across seven categories. These categories encompass various aspects, such as announcing reading programs and new books, identifying and addressing reader needs, developing content by librarians, generating content by readers, providing guidance on external reading information, connecting with professional book review databases and online websites, and utilizing social media services. Through this analysis, the study identified areas for improvement to enhance online readers' advisory services in public libraries and ultimately improve reader satisfaction. It suggested enhancing activities such as librarians' book recommendations and reviews for individual readers, reader participation, and interaction.

  • It is high time to prepare the online publication system of academic research paper. Online publications like digital research paper, e-Book, etc. are increased day by day as the information technology(IT) is developing continually. But, the legal aspect of publication system of academic research paper in Korea is not prepared yet. The purposes of this study are to examine the problems on the publication system of academic research paper in the context of digital goods and to frame a policy of legal proceedings in relation to the social science. The methodology used in this paper is theoretical analysis which is examining the case of academic research system and scientific journal in Korea. As a result of this study, following measures are suggested: (1) Legal provisions on the online publication system, that is, "Research Promotion Law of Korea" controlled by KRF(Korea Research Foundation) and MOE(Ministry of Education) should be revised. (2) Solution like software program and DB system proceeding the data on academic research paper should be prepared newly. (3) From the viewpoint of digital goods, both protecting the intellectual property right and settling the reliance upon online publication system should also be considered simultaneously.

  • This article proposed a new online union catalog of children's material owned by children's libraries and public libraries in Korea. In order to meet users' information needs about children's material the existing access points in the online catalogs should be expanded including such information as children's age, type of publication, genre, subject, theme, book review, awarded books, and location. Since location information about a particular material is essential to users, a national online union catalog of children's material should be constructed.

Effective Ways for Acquiring Multicultural Materials in Korea (국내 도서관의 다문화자료 입수를 위한 효과적 방안 연구)

  • This study deals with problems of acquisition of multicultural materials published in many countries where immigrants living in Korea came from. Until these days, libraries that want to support immigrant community in S. Korea have had many difficulties in acquiring those materials because they used informal acquisition methods and mother countries of the immigrants in Korea have lower quantities and quality of book production and distribution system than developed countries. Through literature review and interviews, some recommendations are suggested : utilizing domestic vendors or book jobbers, contacting online bookstores, publishers and local bookstores in mother countries of the immigrants in Korea, attending international book fairs held in different Asian countries and taking buying trips for multicultural materials and connecting organizations and people related with multicultural materials. This study gives some benefits to libraries that are developing area studies, language and literature collection as well as libraries that are developing multicultural collection.

What's Different about Fake Review? (조작된 리뷰(Fake Review)는 무엇이 다른가?)

  • As the influence of online reviews on consumer decision-making increases, concerns about review manipulation are also increasing. Fake reviews or review manipulations are emerging as an important problem by posting untrue reviews in order to increase sales volume, causing the consumer's reverse choice, and acting at a high cost to the society as a whole. Most of the related prior studies have focused on predicting review manipulation through data mining methods, and research from a consumer perspective is insufficient. However, since the possibility of manipulation of reviews perceived by consumers can affect the usefulness of reviews, it can provide important implications for online word-of-mouth management regardless of whether it is false or not. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed whether there is a difference between the review evaluated by the consumer as being manipulated and the general review, and verified whether the manipulated review negatively affects the review usefulness. For empirical analysis, 34,711 online book reviews on the LibraryThing website were analyzed using multilevel logistic regression analysis and Poisson regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that there were differences in product level, reviewer level, and review level factors between reviews that consumers perceived as being manipulated and reviews that were not. In addition, manipulated reviews have been shown to negatively affect review usefulness.

A Research on the Books Selected in 'One Book, One City' Community Reading Promotion Campaign in Korea (국내 '한 책, 한 도시' 독서운동의 선정책에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to document the current state of 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign (Hereafter called 'One Book' reading campaign), launched in 2003 in Korea, and the characteristics of the selected books. For this research, the homepages, news and reports of a total of 1,170 public libraries and their local government, and several major institutions and organizations related to reading and culture were analyzed with the research method of content analysis and literature review. Also, online catalogs of the National Library of Korea and the National Library for Children and Young Adults were examined to identify the characteristics of 729 titles and 1,179 volumes of books selected in 57 'One Book' programs, as of 2021. The analysis of 57 'One Book' programs and those selected books shows the selection of more than one books in different age groups in more and more 'One Book' programs, lack of consistency in themes of those selected books, and preference for young adult books, new publications and bestselling novels. This trend has weakened individual 'One Book' programs' concentration on one book or one subject, but helped invite a diverse group of people with various interests. More in-depth analysis and explanation of the process of book selection and its appropriateness with the stated goals of 'One Book' programs are needed.

An Empirical Study on Factors Affecting Price Sensitivity and Choice of Internet Bookstores (인터넷 서점유형의 선택에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • Internet lowers the search cost to acquire information about products and sellers price information. Because consumers can easily compare prices among different Internet retailers, the price competition among merchants in Internet has been intensified. For online retailers, it is important to differentiate their sites from competitors based upon services rather than prices. This study investigates which factors influence on consumers price sensitivity in Internet book markets and examines whether consumers price sensitivity has any effect on the type of preferred Internet bookstore (hybrid or pure online book stores). Survey is conducted to empirically investigate the relationship among the various consumer attitudes and price sensitivity. The result shows that price search and price importance have effect on the choice of Internet bookstore. Consumers with higher price sensitivity preferred to purchase books from pure Internet bookstores rather than hybrid (click-and-mortar) bookstores. This study provides an exploratory framework that tries to understand consumer behavior about price sensitivity that might provide some marketing implications to lessen the price competition of Internet retailers.
