A specimen of Arnoglossus polyspilus (G$\ddot{u}$nther) (229.0 mm standard length) belonging to the family Bothidae, collect from the coastal waters of Jeju Island, represents the first record of the species from Korea. This species is characterized by having caudal fin with two simple rays on both upper and lower margins, several anterior dorsal fin rays somewhat elongated, upper jaw extending to below anterior 1/3 of lower eye, and one gill raker on the upper limb of the first gill arch. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name, "No-rang-ban-jeom-ga-ja-mi".

As more highways are constructed and more cars are running on them, toll of roadkill steadily increases. To make the problem more serious, roadkill include endangered species. This study compared two sets of roadkill data of selected Korean highways. One set of data were produced, as a routine job of everyday, by the Korea Highway Corporation (KHC), and the other by a team of wildlife researchers for a limited period of time for research purposes. The aims of the comparison were to identify if the species of the animal, location of the roadkill, time, and other information were kept reasonably, especially in the forms provided to the patrols of KHC, to be used for research purposes later. Major findings and suggestions are; 1) KHC patrols are not wildlife professionals, which is understandable, and could not identify some animal species killed on the highways. As they also are not aware of the importance of the accurate data for the wildlife protection, education to promote their awareness is needed. 2) Current form used by the patrols is far from enough to produce good data for research. A new and detailed form needs to be designed and provided to the patrols so that they can keep all the necessary data on roadkills for monitoring and research purposes. If these issues are addressed, the data collected daily by KHC will become good inputs for roadkill researches in Korea.
About 83% of the total population of Lao PDR lives in rural areas. People living near forest are highly dependent on the forest resources closed to their villages. Especially non-timber forest products (NTFPs) provide a wide range of subsistence needs and are the main source of their cash income. They also make a significant contribution to the country economy. The annual export value of NTFPs is considerably high. 708 edible NTFP species (238 edible plants and 470 animals) have been recorded so far, and about 400 plants have been reported and used as medicinal plants by Lao people. One hundred NTFP species are considered as commercial forest products. The striking trend in NTFP resources is the decline of some commercial species due to increased demand on them for commercialization, and the loss of forest by rapid population growth. To sustainablely manage the NTFPs resources, a number of new management systems are under development and support in progress by the government.

The complex 1 $([Cp*Fe(CO)_2]_2-(\mu-CH=CH-CH=CH))$ which have butadiene as a bridge were synthesized from $Cp*(CO)_2FeK$ and cis-3,4-dichlorocyclobutene. The derivatives of complex 1 where one or two carbonyl groups are replaced by phosphine ligands have been prepared by photochemical substitution. The new derivatives $([Cp*Fe(L)_2]_2-(\mu-CH=CH-CH=CH))$ where L = $(Ph_2PCH_2CH_2PPh_2)$ and $([Cp*Fe(CO)(L)]_2-(\mu-CH=CH-CH=CH))$ where L : $PPh_3$ have been characterized from $^^1H-$, $^^13C-$,$^^31P-NMR$ and elemental analysis. Obtained complexes have been studied in electrochemical experiment and UV/VIS-near-IR. The mixed-valence radical cation forms of complex 2, 3 species were found to be delocalized as the Class III. Based on the separation of the waves ($\triangle E$ : 0.470 ~ 0.605 V), the efficiency of electronic communication between two metal centers of cation species leading to stabilization relative to neutral species. The phosphine-substitute complexes (2, 3) displays two reversible oxidation waves and oxidation state of metal centers-dependent color change, electrochromism, was observed from yellow to orange and deep blue in methylene chloride.
A taxonomic study on the genus Mesocyclops has been accomplished as one of the serial researches on the freshwater cyclopoid cope pods in South Korea. As a result, five species are recognized: M. leuckarti (Claus), M. pehpeiensis Hu, M. dissimilis Defaye and Kawabata, M. woutersi Van de Verde, and M. mariae Guo. Of these, M. dissimilis, M. woutersi, and M. mariae are new to Korean fauna. Morphological details of each species and the intraspecific variabilities are commented. A key to the species of genus Mesocyclops known from Korea is provided.
Heterotrichous ciliates were isolated from marine and brackish habitats in Korea, and their morphology, infraciliature and morphometrical characters were investigated using silver impregnated methods. These three Condylostoma species were identified as Condylostoma curva Burkovsky, 1970, C. minutum Bullington, 1940 and C. spatiosum Ozaki and Yagiu in Yagiu, 1944. The species of Condylostoma based on morphology are highly variable in most of characters and distinguished as following. Condylostoma curva is oval to elongate ellipsoidal, size about $245{\times}100{\mu}m$ in vivo, and conspicuously dark greenish brown with cortical granules on their surface, buccal cavity relatively large about 40% of body length, 5-11 macronuclear nodules, 4-8 frontal cirri serially arranged and 22-38 somatic kineties. Condylostoma minutum is elongate ellipsoidal and the size about $310{\times}55{\mu}m$ in vivo, buccal field about 35% of body length, 12-20 macronuclear nodules, adoral zone consisted of 82-107 membranelles, large and long one frontal cirrus and 38-44 somatic kineties. Condylostoma spatiosum is large elongate ellipsoidal, size about $670{\times}105{\mu}m$ in vivo, buccal cavity about 25% of body length, 11-25 macronuclear nodules, 111-144 adoral membranelles, membrane-like 2 frontal cirri, 49-74 somatic kineties. These three Condylostoma species are described here for the first time in Korea.
The genus Martensia (Delesseriaceae, Rhodophyta) is characterized by thalli composed of one to several blades that consist of proximal membranous sections and distal latticework. Nerves or veins are absent in the membranous sections. The life cycle of Martensia is accomplished by isomorphic alternation of generations. The gametophytes of Martensia are dioecious, and the male and female gametangial plants are morphologically similar. The type species of Martensia is M. elegans Hering. In this study, nine species were confirmed to occur in the subtidal regions of Jeju Island, Korea: M. albida sp. nov., M. australis Harvey, M. bibarii Y. Lee, M. elegans Hering, M. flammifolia sp. nov, M. fragilis Harvey, M. jejuensis Y. Lee, M. palmata Y. Lee, and M. projecta Y. Lee. Three of these, M. australis, M. fragilis, and M. elegans, are new records in the flora of Korea. The results of molecular analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 region in the nrDNA showed that M. elegans is identical to M. australis, and M. fragilis coincides with M. bibarii. It may be a less effective tool for the species discrimination in Martensia.
A new method was developed for the rapid analysis of diverse bacterial species in the natural environment. Our method is based on PCR-single-strands-conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and selective isolation technique of single-stranded DNA. Variable V3 fragments of 16S rDNA were amplified by PCR with bacterial 16S rDNA primers, where one of the primers was biotinylated at the 5'-end. The biotinylated strands of the PCR products were selectively isolated by using streptavidin paramagnetic particles and a magnetic stand, to prevent SSCP analysis producing heteroduplexes from heterogeneous DNA samples. The selected strands were separated by electrophoresis on a polyacrylamide gel, and detected by silver staining. Analysis of PCR products from 8 bacterial strains demonstrated their characteristic DNA band patterns. In addition, changes in the structure of the bacterial community and species diversity in the microcosm treated with phenol could be monitored. After 3 weeks of incubation, phenol and its intermediate, 2-hydroxy-muconic-semialdehyde, were degraded by indigenous bacteria. These dominating bacterial populations were identified as strong bands on an SSCP gel. Therefore, this study provides useful tools for microbial community analysis of natural habitats.
Monthly observations of phytoplankton and physico-chemical properties of sea water were made from October, 1977 to December, 1977 and from June, 1978 to August, 1978 at four stations in Cheonsu Bay. 141 taxa of phytoplankton(diatoms and dinoflagellates) representing 17 families, 40 genera have been identified in this study, and 11 taxa of the number are found to be new to Korea. Nitzschia longissima, Coscinodiscus occulus-iridis, Biddulphia sinensis, were the major species in the phytoplankton communities of the Bay. Leptocylindrus danicus, which was one of the dominant species in June, 1978, showed a distinct pattern of distribution;in June its abundance varied from 89.05% to 1.67% of total abundance along 4 stations. During summer months phytoplankton standing crops were ranged between 25,492 and 129,459 cells/l and the values of species diversity index (H) varied from 0.648 to 3.597. A brief taxonomic account is given.
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of transitional boundary on community composition and soil carbon stock. Five vegetation types were recognized horizontally along the transitional strip based on the dominance of tree species i.e., Pure Anogeissus latifolia forest (P.AL), mixed Pinus roxburghii and Lannea coromandelica forest (M.PR&LC), pure Pinus roxburghii forest (P.PR), mixed Pinus roxburghii and Lannea coromandelica (M.PR&LC) and pure Anogeissus latifolia forest (P.AL). The results revealed that Anogeissus latifolia was reported dominant tree in the outer transitional boundaries of the forest, which reduced dominance of trees towards middle where Pinus roxburghii was found dominant. The soil carbon stock was reported higher in the Anogeissus latifolia dominant forest and reduced with the dominance of Pinus roxburghii in the middle site. Both the species are growing close to one another and competing for survival, but the aggressive nature of Anogeissus latifolia particular in this region may change new growth of Pinus roxburghii and will enhance soil carbon stock. But high anthropogenic pressure on Anogeissus latifolia tree species could be limited chance to further its flourish.
