  • In this study, temperature profile of the fly ash concrete were studied in accordance with the change of heating curing method combination for the slab concrete in order to develop efficient protection method of the concrete subjected to $-20^{\circ}C$. The slab concretes with the size of $1200mm{\times}600mm{\times}200mm$ were fabricated with W/B of 50% and exposed to $-20^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Five different combinations of heat curing methods were applied to the slab concrete specimen; two combinations of heat supplying by electrical heater and surface heat insulation material such as polyethylene film and quadrupled layer bubble sheet based on heat enclosure installment; three combinations of heating coil embedment and surface heat insulation materials such as polyethylene film, sawdust and quadrupled layer bubble sheet based on heat enclosure installment. Test results showed that by applying both heating coil and bubble sheet and heat enclosure, the concrete exposed to $-20^{\circ}C$ can be effectively protected from early-age frost damage.

  • The fire took place in the synthetic heat transfer fluid boiler used in production process of medium density fiberboard. This study investigated pressure distribution of the first, second and third passes and the temperature in the fire burner. The boiler's internal fluid is unsteady due to the out of order inverter. As the operation continues, the flame's flow and speed are unsteady. The synthetic heat transfer fluid leak spouted about 120kg/min in the form of vapor in the early period of the fire. The flame extended to the second and third passes. The highest temperature of the second and third pass is $1059^{\circ}C$ and $1007^{\circ}C$, respectively. The synthetic heat transfer fluid spouted through the cracked part of the fire box in the first pass and accumulated on the turn table. Therefore, it is expected that the temperature of the interior of the fire box is above $1200^{\circ}C$. The temperature of the burner rises to a maximum level several times in a short period. On account of that, several explosions occur in the fire burner. Pressure distribution at steady state in combustion furnace is 2~5mAq and pressure distribution at inverter under fault condition in combustion furnace is 10~-53mAq. The decrement of coil thickness measurement for synthetic heat transfer fluid boiler is 0~5mm.

  • The miniaturization of the Air Handling Unit (AHU) has become an actual need because of the restriction of the using space on the vessel. In modern AHU’s construction, in which the fan section is at the end part of the ship, it’s very difficult to select a suitable capacity of evaporators, because the fan motor emits heat. Thus, the AHU structure has been changed as the fan section has been set before the cooling coil to get temperature values similar to the designed amount. Also, the air guider is installed in order to maintain equal air distribution after it passed the fan section. So, it is possible for air to equally pass the cooling coil. It is investigated three different geometries to find the best performance. Also, It is compared with the numerical and experimental results. The study found the case 3 gives the best results. The results of this study show the possible application of the new design.

  • We are developing a small-sized high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS-SMES) magnet with the nominal storage capacity of 600 kJ, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. Critical current and N-value of a high temperature superconductor with large current, which was selected for the development of the 600 kJ HTS-SMES magnet, were investigated in various oblique external magnetic fields. Based on the critical current and N-value measured for the short sample conductor, we discussed the DC V - I characteristic of a model coil fabricated with the same conductor of 500 m. The results show that the measured critical current and N-value of the conductor for parallel field are constant in external magnetic fields less than about 0.2 T. However, for oblique fields, its critical current and N -value abruptly decrease in all external magnetic fields. Moreover, the measured critical current of the model coil well agrees with the numerically calculated one based on the DC V - I characteristic measured for the short sample conductor. This suggest that losses and critical currents for an HTS-SMES magnet made up of a high temperature superconductor with anisotropic characteristic are predictable from the data of a short sample conductor.

  • We have developed an extremely sensitive radio frequency amplifier based on the dc superconducting quantum interference device (dc SQUID). Unlike a conventional semiconductor amplifier, a SQUID can be cooled to ultra-low temperatures (100 mK or less) and thus potentially achieve a much lower noise temperature. In a conventional SQUID amplifier, where the integrated input coil is operated as a lumped element, parasitic capacitance between the coil and the SQUID washer limits the frequency up to which a substantial gain can be achieved to a few hundred MHz. This problem can be circumvented by operating the input coil of the SQUID as a microstrip resonator: instead of connecting the input signal open. Such amplifiers have gains of 15 dB or more at frequencies up to 3 GHz. If required, the resonant frequency of the microstrip can be tuned by means of a varactor diode connected across the otherwise open end of the resonator. The noise temperature of microstrip SQUID amplifiers was measured to be between $0.5\;K\;{\pm}\;0.3\;K$ at a frequency of 80 MHz and $1.5\;K\;{\pm}\;1.2\;K$ at 1.7 GHz, when the SQUID was cooled to 4.2 K. An even lower noise temperature can be achieved by cooling the SQUID to about 0.4 K. In this case, a noise temperature of $100\;mK\;{\pm}\;20\;mK$ was achieved at 90 MHz, and of about $120\;{\pm}\;100\;mK$ at 440 MHz.

  • A study on the engineering design and numerical thermo-hydraulic analysis for KSTAR TF coil structure cooling system has been conducted. The numerical analyses have been done to verify the engineering design of cooling using the commercial code, FLUENT and in-house code for calculating helium properties which varies with cooling tube's heat transfer. Through the engineering design process based on the steady heat balance concepts, the circular stainless steel tube with inner diameter of 4 mm for TF coil has been selected as cooling tube. From normal operation mode analysis results, total 28 cooling tubes were finally chosen. Also, three dimensional cool down analysis for TF coil with designed cooling tube was satisfied with next three design criteria. First is cooling work termination within a month, second is maximum temperature difference within 50 K in TF coil structure and third is exit helium pressure above 2 bar. Consequently, these cool down scenario results can afford to adopt as operating scenario data when KSTAR facilities operate.

  • Superconducting field coils using a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires with high current density generate high magnetic field of 2 to 5 [T] and electromagnetic force (Lorentz force) acting on the superconducting field coils also become a very strong from the point of view of a mechanical characteristics. Because mechanical stress caused by these powerful electromagnetic force is one of the factors which worsens the critical current performance and structural characteristics of HTS wire, the mechanical stress analysis should be performed when designing the superconducting field coils. In this paper, as part of structural design of superconducting field coils for 17 MW class superconducting ship propulsion motor, mechanical stress acting on the superconducting field coils was analyzed and structural safety was also determined by the coupling analysis system that is consists of commercial electromagnetic field analysis program and structural analysis program.

  • Induction heating is a process that is accompanied with magnetic and thermal situation. When the high-frequency current flows in the coil, induced eddy current generates heat to conductor. To simulate an induction and induction heating process, the finite element analysis program was developed. A coupling method between the magnetic and thermal routines was developed. In the process of magnetic analysis and thermal analysis, magnetic material properties and thermal material properties depending on temperature are taken into consideration. In this paper, to predict the angular deformation, temperature difference and the shape of heat affected zone were discussed. Also appropriate coil shape and other process variables for maximum angular deformation were proposed.

  • The conformational transition of oligopeptide multimer,-(HPPHPPP)n-, is studied (H:hydrophobic amino acid, P:hydrophilic amino acid). The helix/coil transitions are detected in the multimer. The transition depends on the number of amino acid in the sequence, the concentration of the oligopeptide, and temperature which affects helix stability constant (${\xi}$) and hydrophobic interaction parameter (wj). In the thermodynamic equilibrium system jA${\rightarrow}$Aj (where A stands for oligopeptide monomer), Skolnick et al., explained helix/coil transition of dimer by the matrix method using Zimm-Bragg parameters ${\xi}$ and $\sigma$ (helix initiation constant). But the matrix method do not fully explain dangling H-bond effects which are important in oligopeptide systems. In this study we propose a general theory of conformational transitions of oligopeptides in which dimer, trimer, or higher multimer coexists. The partition of trimer is derived by using zipper model which account for dangling H-bond effects. The transitions of multimers which have cross-linked S-S bonds or long chains do not occur, because they keep always helical structures. The transitions due to the concentration of the oligopeptides are steeper than those due to the chain length or temperature.

  • In the dielectric insulation design of any high temperature superconducting (HTS) apparatus as well as HTS fault current limiter in the electrical power systems, the breakdown characteristics of cryogenic coolants such as liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) are an important factor of the insulating engineering. Previous reports concerned with the breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen have pointed out that bubbles and gaseous nitrogen have a treat influence on their breakdown phenomena, However, useful data for practical insulation design of HTS fault CUITent limiter operating at subcooled L$N_2$ have not been obtained enough. Therefore, this paper presents an experimental investigate of breakdown phenomena in liquid nitrogen under AC voltage, And, we observed the breakdown voltage (BDV) of liquid nitrogen with lowering temperature. The Weibull plots of the breakdown voltage of subcooled $LN_2$ for the needle-plane electrode with d= 10 mm are studied, The dependence of breakdown voltage for needle-plane and pancake coil-pancake coil electrode on temperature is illustrated, The relationship between the AC breakdown characteristics and the temperature were clarified.
