An olfactory organ in Scartelaos gigas, so-called mudskipper known as adaptation to an amphibious lifestyle, was investigated anatomically and histologically. S. gigas possessed the paired olfactory organ comprising respectively the one elongated canal and two nasal sacs, lacrimal and ethmoidal nasal sac. The sensory epithelium developed partly in the canal contained four distinct types of cells: (1) receptor cell with 3 to 4 cilia in number, (2) supporting, (3) basal, (4) mucus cell. The sensory epithelium was also of transitional layer as multi cellularity structure. The non-sensory epithelium had no sensory elements. The two nasal sacs possessed typically a lot of mucin droplets. These results might be considered that anatomical structure and histological characters of the olfactory organ showing in S. gigas is adapted to semi-aquatic life associated with its ecological habit and habitat.
Kallmann's syndrome has both a general and specific connotation in describing general condition of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) deficiency or a particular cluster of anomalies associated with primary eunuchoidism. The familial occurrence of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism associated with anosmia, color blindness, synkinesia, and mental defect is the classic Kallmann's syndrome. Interestingly, anosmia, or lack of smell, was not found in the absence of gonadal deficiency in the original study of this disorder. This disorder was found on both sexes, but the male to female ratio was 11:1, and Kallmann's syndrome is more often listed under disorders of male hypogonadism for this reason. Gross anatomy has shown disorders of the olfactory bulbs associated with Kallmann's syndrome and it was demonstrated a failure of GnRH-containing cells to migrate from the olfactory placode to the hypothalamus and preoptic area. We have experienced a case of Kallmann's syndrome which showed a hypoplasia of olfactory bulb in MRI during the workup of primary amenorrheic patient. So we report this case with a brief review of literatures.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to report the effect of Dangguijakyak-san and acupuncture on postviral olfactory disorder. Methods : Dangguijakyak-san extract granule was administered three times a day. Acupuncture was applied to 11 acupoints(EX-HN3, GV20, GV23 and both side of LI04. LR03, LI20, EX-HN8) for 15 minutes once a week. Results : The score of olfactory threshold test and TDI(Threshold-Discrimination-Identification) score increased by 3 points. The subjective sense of smell was improved for the substances that could not previoulsy be smelled. Conclusions : This study shows the possibility of using Dangguijakyak-san and acupuncture to treat postviral olfactory disorder.
Social requirements are needed for living in an aging society and individual longevity. Among them, improved health and medical cares, appropriate for an aging society are strongly demanded. Human cord blood-derived plasma (hUCP) has recently emerged for its unique anti-aging effects. In this study, we investigated brain rejuvenation, particularly olfactory function, that could be achieved by a systemic administration of young blood and its underlying mechanisms. Older than 24-month-old mice were used as an aged group and administered with intravenous injection of hUCP repetitively, eight times. Anti-aging effect of hUCP on olfactory function was evaluated by buried food finding test. To investigate the mode of action of hUCP, brain, serum and spleen of mice were collected for further ex vivo analyses. Systemic injection of hUCP improved aging-associated olfactory deficits, reducing time for finding food. In the brain, although an infiltration of activated microglia and its expression of cathepsin S remarkably decreased, significant changes of proinflammatory factors were not detected. Conversely, peripheral immune balance distinctly switched from predominance of Type 1 helper T (Th1) cells to alternative regulatory T cells (Tregs). These findings indicate that systemic administration of hUCP attenuates age-related neuroinflammation and subsequent olfactory dysfunction by modulating peripheral immune balance toward Treg cells, suggesting another therapeutic function and mechanism of hUCP administration.
This study aims to find out the change in diagnostic capability and image quality compared to 2D TSE T2 after examination the Turbo Factor value of the SPACE 3D T2 technique during Olfactory Bulb examination. As a result of the study, qualitative and quantitative analysis, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference in the SPACE 3D T2 technique compared to the 2D TSE T2 technique, and the conclusion
The olfactory organs of two African lungfishes, Protopterus amphibius and P. dolloi, were investigated using a stereo microscope and a compound light microscope and were described anatomically, histologically, and histochemically. Like other lungfishes, these species present the following general features: i) elongated olfactory chamber (OC), ii) anterior nostril at the ventral tip of the upper lip, iii) posterior nostril on the palate of the oral cavity, iv) lamellae with multiple cell types such as olfactory receptor neurons, supporting cells, basal cells, lymphatic cells, and mucous cells (MC), and vi) vomero-like epithelial crypt (VEC) made of glandular epithelium (GE) and crypt sensory epithelium. Some of these features exhibit differences between species: MCs are abundant in both the lamellar and inner walls of the OC in P. amphibius but occur only in lamellae in P. dolloi. On the other hand, some between feature differences are consistent across species: the GE of both P. amphibius and P. dolloi is strongly positive for Alcian blue (pH 2.5)-periodic acid Schiff (deep violet coloration), and positive with hematoxylin and eosin and with Masson's trichrome (reddish-brown staining), unlike the MCs of the two species which stain dark red with both Alcian blue (pH 2.5)-periodic acid Schiff and Masson's trichrome but respond faintly to hematoxylin and eosin. The differing abundance of MCs in the two lungfishes might reflect different degrees in aerial exposure of the olfactory organ, while the neutral and acid mucopolysaccharide-containing VEC, as indicated by staining properties of the MCs, is evolutionary evidence that P. amphibius and P. dolloi are the closest living relatives to tetrapods, at least in the order Dipnoi.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the case of olfactory disorder treated with Mahwanggachul-tang. Methods : A 58-year-old female patient began to smell the odor of swimming pool water during daily life at the October 2023. Symptoms get worse over time, all smells in daily life felt like bad odors from around January 2024. A brain CT scan was performed to identify other causative diseases, but no abnormal findings were diagnosed. The patient visited the clinic on April 1, 2024, and the patient received Korean medical treatment, including herbal medicine(Mahwanggachul-tang) and acupuncture. The severity of olfactory disorder was evaluated by NRS before and after administration of each treatment term. Results : The patient's symptoms improved and NRS changed 10 to 0. Conclusions : This case study showed an effectiveness of Mahwanggachul-tang treated on Olfactory disorder.
When olfactory placodes are transplanted at stages 23/24 from Xenopus laevis to Xenopus borealis hosts of the same age, it is possible to distinguish the cell populations of the host and donor due to the peculiar nuclear Q bands specific to X. borealis. I have replaced the eye anlage in each of a number of X. borealis with the transplanted olfactory placode of an individual X. laevis, or vice versa. In most instances, the placode of the donor fuses with that of the host. When fusion occurs, but not when the host and donor orqans grow separately, the cells of the donor were replaced gradually and according to a characteristic pattern by cells of the host. The basal cells of the donor were the first to be replaced, followed by the more matured cells of the sensory epithelium. This cellular substitution, proceeding in an orderly fashion from bottom to upper layers of the epithelium, depends on the fusion of the two organs. This observation suggests intercellular contacts in the mitotic zone of the two organs favor the host's cells over those of the donor.

Using ordors with the different concentration of essential oils, e studied the effect of a pleasant olfactory stimulation on physiological responses. we examined psychological response, mental task and changes in cardiac, immunity and EEG in responses to 150times solution (feel easily) and 500times solution (feel with difficulty) which of essential oil (called PCK) were diluted in propylene glycol, and neutral (water). The 150times solution that was felt pleasant produced significant differences (p<0.05) in relative power change of beta activity in the left frontal region (Fp1, F3, F7) of the brain, and heart rate (HR) deceleration after mental task. these results are consistent with substantial research that has documented cardiac and EEG responses to pleasant stimuli. What is more, 150times solution increased the concentration of s-IgA know as an index of immunity.
Persistent primitive olfactory artery (PPOA) is a rare anomaly of the anterior cerebral artery. We present one case of PPOA incidentally diagnosed with the aid of computed tomography (CT) angiography. A 24-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital after sudden onset of vertigo. Three-dimensional CT angiography revealed an anomalous artery arising from the terminal portion of the right internal carotid artery. The proximal portion of the anomalous artery coursed anteromedially and made a hairpin turn posterosuperior to the midline. PPOA may be overlooked because of its rarity, but CT angiography can be useful in detecting this rare vascular anomaly. Follow-up study is necessary in our case to confirm whether an aneurysm occurs on the PPOA.
