  • Shock absorber for rotorcraft landing gear should absorb landing impact during landing and isolate vibration to fuselage during taxiing. Double stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber is known to have better performances than single stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber. This paper deals with the z-direction translational acceleration at mass center, roil and pitch angular acceleration of fuselage for single and double stage oleo-pneumatic shock absorber at nose landing gear when a 6DOF rigid model is taxiing on the pound.

  • Role of landing gear is to absorb energy which is generated by aircraft ground maneuvering and landing. Generally, in order to absorb the impact energy, oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber is used in aircraft landing gear. Oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber has a good energy absorption efficiency and is light in weight because structure of oleo-pneumatic type shock strut is relatively simple. In this study, dynamic load analysis for swinging arm type landing gear was performed to predict landing loads. Modeling of landing gear was conducted with MSC.ADAMS, and dynamic landing loads were analyzed based on ADS-29. Optimum landing loads were generated through adjustment of damping orifice and the analysis results were presented with various aircraft attitude.

Oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber has a good energy absorbing efficiency and is light in weight because its structure is relatively simple. For the landing gear development, it is necessary to conduct drop test in order to verify shock absorbing performance. In the drop test, first, gas spring curve verification tests are conducted. Then, limit and reserve energy absorption drop tests are performed based on the STANAG 4671. The drop tests results with performance analysis results are presented.

  • The main function of a landing gear is to absorb the impact energy during touchdown. Most landing gear use an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber which essentially consists of an oil damper and a gas spring. The performance of a shock absorber can be estimated by analysis but it should be verified by drop test, which is required by MIL Spec. and FAR. In the drop test, various data such as ground loads, shock absorber pressure, stroke and mass travel are analyzed to validate the shock absorbing efficiency and the mathematical model for analysis. This paper presents the introduction of drop test facility, the test procedure and data evaluation method with real drop test example.

  • A landing gear absorbs the impact energy during the touchdown and it generally consists of an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber and structural components. It should be designed not only to satisfy the static and fatigue strength requirements but to have the sufficient shock absorbing efficiency. The design loads and shock absorbing performance are to be validated by tests, which is required by MIL Spec and FAR, etc. This paper presents the development procedures from the design requirements to the qualification tests and technical points to be considered, with examples of the helicopter landing gear development.

  • In this work, mathematical models are newly presented for three types of double-acting oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers as the first part of a comparative study on the several types of double-acting oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers. After a typical single-acting shock absorber model is presented for the sake of completeness, mathematical models of three types of double-acting shock absorbers are proposed. To derive the models, Bernoulli equation and orifice discharge coefficient are utilized along with the assumptions of incompressibility and poly-tropic process. The proposed models are expected to be used for investigation of the salient features of several types of double-acting oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers.

  • In this work, numerical analyses are carried out and the behaviors are investigated for three types of double-acting oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers along with the mathematical models proposed in the part I of this work. After presenting each numerical algorithm corresponding to each model, the numerical algorithms are implemented as user-subroutines in MSC/ADAMS commercial multi-body dynamic software. By using the developed user-subroutines, numerical studies are carried out for compression/stretch test as well as drop test. From the comparative studies, we investigated the salient feature of each double-acting oleo-pneumatic shock absorber. Results identifies that it is possible to increase the absorbing efficiency in accordance with the requirements for aircraft landing conditions.

  • The shock absorber is very important in various mechanical field. Without the shock absorber, the structure might be broken. For lunar lander, honeycomb shock absorber to absorber the shock by using plastic deformation of honeycomb has been used. It is cheap and simple to use but impossible using again without changing the honeycomb. The oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber is not able to use in the cosmos because it is vacuum and its temperature. This study suggests the hybrid shock absorber combined spring-ratchet mechanical shock absorber and eddy current electromagnetic damper. The ratchet restricts rebound of lunar lander and the spring converts the impact energy to the potential energy of the spring. The eddy current damper dissipates the impact energy by eddy current force without contact between the parts. This hybrid shock absorber is reusable while the honeycomb shock absorber isn't. The impact absorbing test of the hybrid shock absorber was carried out. This paper shows that the compared results the hybrid shock absorber with ratchet and without ratchet and evaluates the possibility of using for lunar lander.

  • The most landing gear use oleo-pneumatic shock strut to absorb the impact energy during touchdown. The shock strut is composed of the oil damper and the gas spring, especially the oil damper provides resistance force which is proportional to the square of landing speed. In case of high landing speed, the abnormal peak load can be occurred and transferred to the airframe structure. To prevent this, the pressure-relief valve is used to limit the damping force under the specific level. In this paper, it is presented the design process to find optimal damping and analysis results using pressure-relief valve.

  • In this study, the failure mode and energy absorption capabilities of a composite shock absorber device, during an emergency landing are evaluated. The prototype has been installed and tested in laboratory simulating an emergency landing test condition. The crash absorber presents an innovative configuration able to reduce the loads transmitted to a helicopter fuselage during an emergency landing. It consists of a composite tailored tube installed on the landing gear strut. During an emergency landing this crash absorber system should be able to absorb energy through a pre-designed deformation. This solution, compared to an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber, avoids sealing checks, very high values of the shock absorber pressure, and results to be lighter, easy in maintenance, inspect and use. The activities reported in this paper have become an attractive research field both from the scientific viewpoint and the prospect of industrial applications, because they offer benefits in terms of energy absorbing, weight savings, increasing the safety levels, and finally reducing the costs in a global sense.
