The positive relationship between older driver's mobility and life satisfaction is well established(e. g., Collins, 2008). The present study showed that this relationship can be changed by older drivers' motivation, aspects of mobility, and affectivity. Specifically, this study examined whether aspects of mobility(amount of driving measured by travel distance and time: 'AD' or amount of driving for social activity: 'DSA') can be differed as a function of approach/avoidance motivation(measured by BIS/BAS scale, Carver et al., 1994) and positive/negative affect(PA/NA; measured by SPANAS, Diener et al., 2009) mediate the relationship between the aspects of mobility and life satisfaction(measured by SWLS, Diener et al., 1985). Self-reported scores of the variables of 132 older drivers(ages of over 65) were analyzed using correlation analysis and path analysis. The results can be summarized as followings. First, the older driver's BAS was found to be positively related to DSA, but BIS was negatively to AD. In particular, DSA positively mediated the relationship between BAS and PA. Second, PA, in turn, positively mediated the relationship between DSA and life satisfaction. The results can provide useful insights to understand the relationship between older driver's driving property, motivation, affectivity and life satisfaction.
This study was conducted to derive the traffic accident risk index through the recognition of the elderly driver's driving pattern to reduce the traffic accident rate of elderly drivers and to reflect them in the renewal and return policy of driver's license accordingly. First, the traffic accident risk index is defined by analyzing the behavioral characteristics of older drivers to derive the major factors that lead to traffic accidents. Second, we present a method to measure the traffic accident risk index from the driving pattern of the elderly through the smart-phone, the camera and the distance sensor attached to the car. Finally, we derive three thresholds by computer simulation and determine the accident risk from the measured traffic accident risk index as four steps and suggest ways to ensure safe driving of older drivers. It is required to objectively assess the driving ability of an aged driver in accordance with the proposed method, and to induce the driver to reset the driver's license renewal cycle and voluntarily return the driver's license to minimize social costs due to increased traffic accidents.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationships between cognitive abilities and driving characteristics of elderly drivers. Driving characteristics of elderly and younger drivers who were driving a fixed base driving simulator vehicle were examined. Participants consisted of 12 drivers over age 65 (the 'older' group) and 12 drivers between the ages of 25 and 55 (the "younger" group). As indices of cognitive ability, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) tests and cognitive reaction tests were given before the driving task. CFF was also tested after the simulated driving task for both groups. Cognitive reaction tests, which were composed of speed estimation tests, multiple choice reaction tests and obstacle avoidance tests, were developed by the Korean Road Traffic Safety Authority in 2003. CFF values between the two groups exhibited significant differences both before and after the task, with a p-value less than 0.01 and a t-value of -3.01 before the test and a p-value less than 0.031 and a t-value of -2.35 after the test. Older drivers' CFF values were lower than those of the younger. However, there was no difference in older or younger driver CFF values before and after the task within the same group. Except for the multiple choice reaction test, there was no difference in cognitive reaction test results between the two groups. The elderly drivers made more errors though they did not differ from the younger drivers in reaction times. At the simulated driving task the reaction time of the elderly driver was longer than that of the younger; however, the driving speed of the elderly was lower and the number of collisions greater. There was a positive correlation (r=.496) between the number of errors in the multiple choice reaction test and the number of collisions in the driving task. Therefore, it was identified that critical attributes contributing to automobile crashes involving elderly drivers included cognitive difficulty in judging and responding to complex situations.
PURPOSES: Nighttime driving is very different from daytime driving because drivers must obtain nighttime sight-distances based on road lights and headlights. Unfortunately, nighttime driving conditions in Korea are far from ideal due to poor lighting and an insufficient number of road lights and inadequate operation and maintenance of delineators. This study is conducted to develop new standards for nighttime road visibility based on experiments of driver perception for nighttime visibility conditions. METHODS : In the study, perception level and satisfaction of nighttime visibility were investigated. A total of 60 drivers participated, including 34 older drivers and 31 young drivers. To evaluate driver perceptions of nighttime road visibility, fuzzy set theory was used because the conventional analysis methods for driver perception are limited in effectiveness for considering the characteristics of perception which are subjective and vague, and are generally expressed in terms of linguistic terminologies rather than numerical parameters. RESULTS : This study found that levels of nighttime visibility, as perceived by drivers, are remarkably similar to their satisfactions in different nighttime driving conditions with a log-function relationship. Older drivers evaluated unambiguously degree of nighttime visibility but evaluations by young drivers regarding it were unclear. CONCLUSIONS : A minimum value of brightness on roads was established as YUX 30, based on final analyzed results. In other words, road lights should be installed and operated to obtain more than YUX 30 brightness for the safety and comfort of nighttime driving.

Due to the lack of judgement in an information processing on road sign, older drivers usually are having a hard time driving than young group. Furthermore, according to increasing in aging population, older drivers in Korea have been growing much faster. That means research for older drivers' characteristics and the number of guide name for road sign should be needed. In accordance with suggestions, this study was carried out the number of guide names for road sign with a variety of ages from the twenties to the seventies. For the sake of this study, statistical verification was conducted to confirm a change of speed, a reading time and a misreading rate with Driving Simulator and Electrooculogram tool. As the results of study, change of speed in the age range has shown that the higher the proportion of age, the lower the rate of velocity. Also reading time in the age range with regression analysis found that the higher the proportion of age, the higher the rate of reading time by 0.106sec. Finally, a binary logistic model was used to find the main factors. As the results, 4 number of guide names for road sign have been the best of them for older driver. The result of this study verified the importance of ideal guide numbers on road sign for older driver and proved itself to be an effective method to determine the road safety for the road signs.

Recent technological advances made a vehicle more intelligent to increase safety and comfort. An intelligent vehicle provides drivers with safety warning information through audible sounds, visual displays, and tactile devices. However, elderly drivers have been known to decrease the physical and cognitive abilities such as muscular strength, hearing, eyesight, short term memory, and spatial perception. Therefore, possible age-related deficits should be considered to design an effective warning system. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of advancing age on response performance on audible safety warnings which are widely used for alerting driving hazards. In order to understand the effect of age-related hearing loss and movement slowing, three sound characteristics (frequency, intensity, and period) and three age groups (younger, middle, and older) are considered. Data was drawn from 38 drivers who drove a simulated rural road in a driving simulator. Experimental results show that age influences driver's response performance. In conclusion, the appropriate range of a warning sound is suggested.
Middle- and old-aged driver's capability in recognition for driving scene elements was compared. Central and ambient stimuli were selected from natural driving scene and sensitivity, bias and reaction time were measured as dependent measures. The results are as follows. First, in general, older drivers showed lower sensitivity than middle-aged drivers. In particular, the older drivers' sensitivity was significantly lower for the ambient stimuli than central stimuli, whereas the middle-aged drivers showed no significant difference between the two types of stimuli. Second, the older drivers tended to show more lenient responses whereas the middle-aged drivers responded more conservatively. Third, the older drivers showed longer reaction time than the middle-aged drivers, in particular, in the responses of miss and correct rejection. This results suggested that the older drivers' retention for driving scene elements in their working memory may not be stable, which can be resulted in difficulties in rapid and accurate responses in a real life driving.
Assuming the majority of car accidents are due to driver errors, we due rear-end collisions which occurred in the State of Washington, USA, in 1982, 1983, and 1984, to study human responsible involvement associated with the sex and age of drivers. Rear-end collisions involving two passenger cars are included in this study. The driver of a car which struck the rear end of another car is considered responsible for the accident, and the driver of a car which was struck in the rear end is not considered responsible for the accident. In addition to male and female drivers, we used three different age groups: 16 to 24 years old, 25 to 34 years old, and 35 years or older. Hence, six diferent groups of drivers are considered in this study.
This study investigated the relationship between older driver's safe driving behavior, driving mobility(amount of driving, assessment for driving-related physical ability, confidence for adaptation in driving situation, amount of social activity) and subjective well-being(life satisfaction, positive/negative affect). The data of these variables were collected by questionnaire method based on face-to-face interview. The results can be summarized as followings. First, the older driver who reported higher scores in the self-report safe driving behavior questionnaire tended to show higher level of subjective well-being and driving-based mobility. Second, all the sub-factors in the driving-based mobility questionnaire were positively related to life satisfaction, positive affect but negatively related to negative affect except amount of driving. Finally, it was found that both confidence for adaptation in driving situation and amount of social activity positively mediated the relationship between self-report safe driving behavior and life satisfaction and positive affect, but confidence for adaptation in driving situation negatively mediated the relationship between self-report safe driving behavior and negative affect, Implication and suggestion were discussed.

Currently, there are some aptitude test systems for older drivers in Korea. However, there are no methods and systems to evaluate the real driving ability for older drivers based on filed driving test. This study was conducted to investigate the availability to use the driving course test used for driving license for identifying difference in driving ability of older and non-older drivers. For the research purpose, filed experiments were conducted using the real driving course test site and evaluation times used in the field. In particular, driving behavior data that obtained from the experiments for two driver groups, older and non-older drivers, were analyzed and compared. From several statistical analyses of driving ability and vision and cognitive ability, it was found that the currently used driving course test site and evaluation times were not appropriated to identify driving ability deficiency of older drivers. To solve the problem, this study developed five evaluation items to identify driving ability deficiency of older drivers using the currently used driving course test site. It was also found that the developed five evaluation items have statistically significant correlation with vision and cognitive ability.
