Bacterial Diversity at Different Depths in Lead-Zinc Mine Tailings as Revealed by 16S rRNA Gene Libraries

  • Bacterial communities at 10 cm, 100 cm, and 200 cm depths in a 100-year-old lead-zinc tailing heap were evaluated by constructing 16S rRNA gene libraries. In total, 98 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified from 193 clones at a 3% sequence difference level. The OTU number and species richness decreased with the depth. Species composition was significantly different between the three libraries. Fifty-seven percent of the examined clones were Acidobacteria and 27% belonged to Proteobacteria. Other sequences included Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Chlamydiae, Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospira, and three unclassified OTUs. Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were mainly distributed in the rhizosphere of naturally colonizing plants; however, Deltaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Chloroflexi tended to inhabit the deeper tailings (below the 100 cm-depth).

A Study on the Assessment of the Contamination by Acid Mine Drainage in Abandoned Coal Mines (국내폐탄광의 산성폐수 오염도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Temporal and spatial comparisons of acid mine drainage contaminated waters are difficult because of the complex physico-chemical nature of the pollutant. In the present study, an acid mine drainage index has been developed and evaluated for the assessment of surface waters. AMD index is calculated using a modified arithmetic weighted index using seven parameters which are most indicative of AMD contamination, i. e. pH value, sulphate, iron, zinc, aluminum, copper and manganese. Weighting is used to express the relative indicator value of each parameter. The proposed AMD index is used to quantify contamination from acid mine drainage over ten different old mine sites and assess the degree of impact on surface on surface waters. As a result of AMD evaluation, the Sukbong Mine located near the Moonkyung province showed lowest AMD value indicating the worst acid mine drainage quality. In overall, Youngdong mine sites showed higher contaimination compared to the other mine sites including Youngsuh, Choongbu, Suhbu and Nambu area.

Distribution of Cadmium, Copper, Lead, and Zinc in Paddy Soils around an Old zinc Mine (가학광산 주변 논토양의 카드뮴, 구리, 납 및 아연 함량 분포)

  • This study was carried out to provide information for establishing counter measures of soil pollution through analysis of Cd. Cu, Pb, and Zn in paddy soils and brown rice. Cadmium, Cu, Pb, and Zn contents in soils were analyzed and distribution maps for these heavy metals were prepared. Heavy metal contents in brown rice were also measured. Average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in surface paddy soils extracted with 0.1 N HCl were 7.4, 35.8, 98.9, and $118.8mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. These were 9 times (Cu) to 50 times (Cd) higher than the background level of heavy metals in unpolluted paddy soils in Korea. The contents of Pb and Zn were lower than those measured in 1980, whereas Cd content did not decrease. The levels of heavy metal contamination in paddy soils may not affect growth or yield of rice plant, however, Cd contents indicated a level of serious concern to humans. The average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in brown rice were 0.38, 2.38, 1.31 and $22.31mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively.

Characterization of Heavy Metals in the Stream Sediment around an Old Zinc Mine (가학광산 지역 하천 저니토 중금속의 화학적 특성)

  • This study was carried out to prepare information for the establishment of countermeasures for an area contaminated with minewaste from an old zinc mine at Kahak-long in Kwangmyong. Minewaste and bottom sediments from the streams in this area were sampled and were analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn extracted with different solution. Total heavy metal contents in both minewaste and bottom sediments were fairly high. Cadmium and Zn contents in the minewaste and Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn contents in the bottom sediments extracted with 0.1 N HCl showed a much higher level than those in the background level of paddy soils and in the soils around the other metal mines regardless of the distance from the mine. Sulfide/residue forms of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn covered the highest portions for the minewaste. For bottom sediments, sulfide/residue forms of Cu and Zn formed the highest portions, whereas the contents of both carbonate and sulfide/residue forms of Cd and Pb were significant. The lower the pH of the extracting solutions, the more heavy metals extracted from both minewaste and bottom sediments.
