  • Saam Park Sun(1523-1589) holds a very important position in history of 16th century $d{\grave{a}}oxu{\acute{e}}$ politics. Starting from King Seonjo's accession in 1567, he took a lead in changing the former Politics by Hoonchuck(勳戚政治) to $d{\grave{a}}oxu{\acute{e}}$ politics. He served a prime minister alone for 14 years. Following philosophy of $d{\grave{a}}oxu{\acute{e}}$ politics that Jo Gwang-jo(趙光祖, 1482-1519) had advocated a generation earlier, he sought reformative politics by rising elites. He pursued ideal politics of $d{\grave{a}}oxu{\acute{e}}$ in which principles and public opinion agreed with each other and to realize it, he was in the forefront of correcting 'shìdào(世道)' and improving 'qīngyì(淸議).' It is why $d{\grave{a}}oxu{\acute{e}}$ politics is called shìdào politics(世道政治). He emphasized 'old manners(古禮)' as standard to criticize wrong reality and to realize ideals. The 'old' in his mind was ideals, principles and traditions. The most meaningful reform was to go back to spirit of 'old.' It is why he put stress on and stuck to practice of 'old manners' in national liturgy.

  • This documentary study explored the stages of human development and education in the Choson Dynasty with the use of "Non Eu, Ye Gi, So Hak, Tae Gyo Sin Gi, and Dong Yi Bo Gam. The findings were compared with Western writings of a comparable period. It was found that education in the Choson Dynasty was largely concerned with mental attitude and conduct in ordinary life (education for manners and living). Education claimed to stand for unity of knowledge and behavior. It was founded on a Confucian view of education with a saint as the ideal model to be emulated. In the early years, home influence was emphasized. This was later replaced by institutional education. Additional education frequently extended to ten years and even forty or more years for the development of leaders. Based on the above findings. It was concluded that (1) the Western stages of human development exemplified by the Puritans and by Rousseau were concerned only with progressive changes from the postnatal stage to adolescence but the stages or the Choson Dynasty applied to the entire life span, from prenatal life through old age: (2) the developmental stages of males and females were defined differently as a result of differences in educational contents and sex-role distinctions: (3) life span educational objectives were Confucian and the preparatory stages were long coming to fruition in late senescence: and (4) although education was centered on manners and based on Confucianism, much of human development in the Choson Dynasty corresponds to that of modern times.

  • This study examines the construction method of lime tomb of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty based on reference. This was primarily published as "The Five Manners and Courtesy of the Annals of Sejong" as examples, which were followed by the influence of Koryo's culture in the beginning foundation of Choseon, were organized in the time of Sejong; and later, in the time of Sungjong, "The National Five Manners and Courtes y" was published. Such old reference explains the stone materials and construction method of the royal tomb's pit yet there were not many studies regarding the pit of royal tomb in the Choseon Dynasty. And there exists no historical research or reference study in regard to the pit of royal tomb which is formed as a lime tomb. This is believed to be impossible to excavate the royal tomb since ancestral ritual formalities are still given by the descendants and because of our country's culture of giving ancestral ritual formalities which value formalities and filial duty. However, the current excavation of Guhui Tomb, which was the early burial site, was important since it gives an opportunity to look at the shape and structure of lime tombs in the Choseon Dynasty. Thus, this study, based on the excavation of Guhui Tomb, will look into the construction method of the pit of lime tomb and will examine the structure, shape, construction method, etc. of the lime tomb which was formed after the time of Sejo in a way with reference history. This is an important data to learn the construction method of limb tomb of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty and is believed to have a very important value as historical materials as to understanding the structure of the pit of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty which yet has not been excavated.

  • Based on the Greek myth of Pygmalion and the fairy tale of Cinderella, Shaw's Pygmalion demonstrates a masterful coalescence of these two narrative motifs into a coherent plot scheme. Even more significant is his keen insight into the conflicts created at the tripartite intersection of human activity concerning language/class/culture, which, as the leitmotif, revolves around lessons in language learning. This play basically deals with human transformation and by its very nature, Higgins's experimentation with transforming Eliza cannot stop at language alone. Her cultural transformation ripples over into the realms of gesture and even a unique way of living (modus vivendi) intimately associated with taste and manners, which Bourdieu terms as habitus. By acquiring a new fashion and language, Eliza is reborn as a new lady aspiring to be filled with a newly acquired habitus. While separating her from her old Cockney style, Higgins inculcates Queen's English in Eliza, in which process her changed speech styles gradually transforms and restructures her deportment and manners, finally generating new practices, perceptions and attitudes. The gist of Pygmalion is however less Eliza's ascent into the middle class than her battle for symbolic capital waged at the level of language. By problematizing his contemporary practice of habitus conventionalized and warped by class distinctions based on economic, social and cultural capitals, Shaw creates a new humanist model of man founded on spiritual and rational virtues. In conclusion, Eliza is not a frigid Galatea but a dynamic character that goes through a brilliant transformation of three stages: 1) linguistic; 2) cultural, and 3) humanist. Finally she is built into a "consort battleship" on an equal standing with her sculptor. The process of her character-building cannot be illuminated without resorting to the dynamic notion of habitus, which highlights the process of inculcation, structuring, generation and transposing. Given the overwhelming weight of the heroine's role and the dynamic process of her transformation as the major plot scheme, this play should be christened Galatea in lieu of Pygmalion.

  • Reinforced earth is a composite construction material in which the strength of engineering fill is enhanced by the addition of strong tensile reinforcement in variable types. The basic mechanism of reinforced earth involves the generation of frictional forces and bearing resistances between the soil and the reinforcement. The primitive structure of reinforced earth in Korean peninsula were found as the earth wall built around the old fort In about 3rd century Modern reinforced earth was introduced to Korea early 1980, and spreaded tremendously through the nation. Among them, not a few reinforced earth walls which were built ignored over all stabilities have been collapsed. In this paper basic concepts, economic benefits, design considerations and future applicable trends of reinforced earth are reviewed in simple manners.
