  • It's a tendency to strengthen related international laws as the importance on marine oil pollution recently becomes the issue. According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15 ppm only and oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380 cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. Oily water pre-separator of laminated plate type which is one of gravity type separator has very simple structure and it also makes easier to maintain and repair. In another words, it fits well to process large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. In this paper, oily water pre-separator of laminated plate type has been studied. The function of emulsified oil and 4 different types of oil have been analyzed and each character has been investigated and proved by experiments. As the result of it, the efficiency of separating oil water has been advanced by 10% in case equipped with pre-separator. In addition, the higher temperature is and the more laminated plate has, it turns out to be getting more effect.

  • Water is removed from crude oil containing water by using oil separator. This study aims to develop a three-dimensional (3D) Eulerian computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict the separation efficiency of air-water-oil separator. In the incompressible, isothermal and unsteady-state CFD model, air is defined as continuous phase, and water and oil are given as dispersed phase. The momentum equation includes the drag force, lift force and resistance force of porous media. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence flow. The exit pressures of water and oil play an important role in determining the liquid level of the oil separator. The exit pressures were identified to be 6.3 kPa and 5.1 kPa for water and oil, respectively, to keep a liquid level of 25 cm at a normal operating condition. The time evolution of volume fractions of air, water and oil was investigated. The settling velocities of water and oil along the longitudinal separator distance were analyzed, when the oil separator reached a steady-state. The oil separation efficiency obtained from the CFD model was 99.85%, which agreed well with experimental data. The relatively simple CFD model can be used for the modification of oil separator structure and finding optimal operating conditions.

The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in the separating process.

  • This paper describes oil water separator using difference of electrical resistor. Oil is a non-conductive element and water is a relatively high conductive element. It is possible to detect water included in oil. Electric sensor is formed 8mm iron stick. Valve is operated With controller inputting signal of electric sensor. A experiment was done for necessary voltage in making program of controller. Oil water separator which was tested in field conditions was saved 7% of whole oil and was drained over 150% water than manual valve.

However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.

  • The centrifugal separator which uses gravity separation method for oil-water separation, rotating at high-speed, is one of the most commonly used device for controlling the amount of the oil in waste water collected in bilge. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has set regulations, also known as MARPOL 73/78, for the prevention of marine pollution. In addition, DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV) has set standards regarding the assignment of Environmental Class Notation, CLEAN or CLEAN DESIGN, of ships. One of the requirements for classification is that in addition to conforming to MARPOL 73/78, more stringent measures must be taken as well. One of these measures is to limit the oil concentration in bilge water to less than 5ppm. So in this study, an Oil-Water Separator (OWS) is used together with multiple separating plates as a filtration system to be used as an oil-water separation device. The OWS operates using centrifugal separation in which the mixture is separated by centrifugal forces. The main purpose of this paper is to present the OWS separation efficiency according to the rotation speed, mass-flow rate, the angle and the number of stacked layers of the laminated plate using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Improvements to the device will be investigated from these results.

  • A small scale centrifugal oil separator consisted of two concentric tubes was fabricated for spilt oil recovery. With speed control of the inner tube, its performance of oil separation was investigated. Oil-water mixture is separated by forced vortex motion with the rotating inner tube. Velocity and pressure distributions in the tubes were calculated. Control of rotating speed, which is the most influencing parameter, showed an optimum value 946rpm corresponding to the acceleration of 20g at the inner tube surface. Separation performance was suddenly deteriorated at rotating speed higher than 1200rpm.

  • Recently, as the high-precision machinery industry has developed rapidly, peripheral equipment has been developed to improve machining efficiency. Peripheral equipment for machining includes cooling units, housings, oil separators, and much more. Oil, such as cleaning and cutting fluids, is used for machining. When waste oil is reused, the contamination of the workpieces and reduction in machining accuracy are generated by the waste oil, including sludge. Therefore, the development of an oil separator is necessary for efficiently separating oil, water, and sludge. The purpose of this study is to analyze the oil separation efficiency and flow characteristics of a high-speed centrifugal separator according to the rotation velocity and diffusion plate. The oil separation efficiency and flow characteristics were analyzed using hydrodynamic theory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results of this study will be used as basic data for the development of a high-speed centrifugal separator.

  • The need to control the oil content in oily bilge water discharges to meet the increasing stringent seawater pollution standards has led to the development of gravity type separators. Among the several gravitational methods, a plate type oily water separator can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is believed to be an efficient method dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficiency of oil/water separation with the characteristics of separating plate arrangement. An experimental study was carried out to analyse an efficient treatment oil-water mixture with variation of operating parameters, including flow rates, inlet oil concentrations and the height between the plates. The experimental results show that the height between the plates has a significant effect on the separation efficiency. The best efficiency was acquired when the ration of the height between the plates the plates to distance(H/Ci) was 2 with lower inlet oil concentration and lower flow rate.

  • In this numerical study, the separation efficiency of three-phase separator in an oil-sand plant was studied with various inlet head configurations. The free water knockout (FWKO) vessel was designed with a flow rate of $15.89m^3/day$ (100 bbl/day) and the SOR(stream-to-oil ratio)=3.5 was derived using Stokes' law. For modularization, optimization of the design of the inlet head configuration was performed with parallel-connected dual FWKO vessels. The feed condition of bitumen emulsion was API=17, $T_{in}=150^{\circ}C$ and $P_{in}=50bar$. A mean residence time was determined the time when 95% of the oil and water in FWKO vessel was separated. The combination between the volume of fluid (VOF) and the discrete phase model (DPM) was used to simulate the phase separation phenomenon in a multi-phase separator. Furthermore, in order to calculate multi-phase flow the pseudo-transient method was adopted.
