As the upending is one of the critical steps in the installation of offshore structure, datail procedure of upending operation is studied in the paper. For larger offshore structure installation, launching method is often applied. However after launching, the upending process is to be followed. To ensure successful upending operation, datail process is analysed considering various factors affecting on the operation including reserved buoyancy, free flotation position, seabed clearance, ballast and hook load. To investigate the influence of each factor on the procedure, twelve numerical jacket models with various dimensions are simulated and studied. From the study, it is revealed that the increase of buoyance and decrease of self weight generate a large seabed clearance. The law seabed clearance during flooding creates higher hook load and height. The paper also introduces a guideline for the related structure design and construction with the effects of contribution factors in the upending operation.
Advances in geological studies, have identified increased seismic activity in the world's ocean once believed to be far from seismic hazards. The increase in demand of oil and other hydrocarbons leaves no option but to install a suitable offshore platform on these seismically sensitive offshore basins. Therefore, earthquake based design criteria for offshore structures are essential. The focus of the present review is on various computational techniques involved for seismic response study. The structural and load modeling approaches, the disturbed fluid-structure and soil-structure interaction as well as hydrodynamic damping due to earthquake excitation are also discussed. A brief description on the reliability-based seismic design approach is also presented.
As we are facing the shortage of oil energy, studies on renewable energy, wind energy research has been naturally getting attention. Among wind energies, ocean wind energy is relatively abundant compared to land wind energy and therefore, is getting much attention in terms of its efficiency. However, the problem is the cost. Generally, the cost ratio of the supporting structure is over 25% of the total installation cost of a offshore wind turbine system. Thus, it is very important to reduce the total installation cost of the offshore wind turbine and develop accurate analysis methodology for various offshore wind turbine foundations. In this study, nonlinear structure-soil interaction analyses have been proposed and conducted for the typical suction bucket model of an offshore wind turbine foundation, and the results were compared with experimental test data for numerical validations.

Construction of a large offshore structure in coastal area may cause serious morphological changes for a wide region ranging from shoreline to offshore behind the structure. Shin et at. [2000] and Shin and Hong [2004] identified the sediment transport patterns behind the large offshore structure through a series of three dimensional movable bed experiments. In present study, a hybrid three dimensional beach deformation model was suggested based on those sediment transport mechanisms revealed by experimental results of the preceding studies. The model was verified by the results of the three dimensional moveable bed experiments and they agreed well not only in reappeared tombolo in shoreline side but also in the erosion and deposition region behind offshore structure. In addition, the model was applied to real beach deformation problem, which was occurred by construction of artificial offshore islands, and it validates the applicability of the model.
The current work presents an analysis algorithm for the modal analysis for the dynamic behaviors of offshore structures with concepts of mass perturbation influence term. The mass perturbation concept by using the term, presented in this paper offers an efficient solution procedure for dynamical response problems of offshore structures. The basis of the proposed method is the mass perturbation influence concepts associated with natural frequencies and mode shapes and mass properties of the given structure. The mathematical formulation of the mass perturbation influence method is described. New solution procedures for dynamics analysis are developed, followed by illustrative example problems, which deal with the effectiveness of the new solution procedures for the dynamic analysis of offshore structures. The solution procedures presented herein is compact and computationally simple.
Nowadays, offshore wind energy experiences a rapid development because of its wind condition and no noise impact problem. Different from Europe, offshore wind is just started in Asia. More work and research are needed in Korea. In this work, a three-bladed upwind variable speed pitch controlled 5MW wind turbine on a jacket support structure is used. During the simulation, several design load cases are investigated in two different fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic codes. Some critical loads on the foundation are compared and analyzed.
Polychaete community structure and its spatial distribution was investigated in 2008 from inshore and offshore of Lake Shihwa, Korea, in order to evaluate status of the benthic environment according to construction of the dike and the water gate. In the present study, the number of species, density, and diversity of polychaete community in inshore was significantly different from those in offshore. The density of polychaete community in offshore increased with the number of species whereas the diversity in inshore increased with the number of species. Dominant species in offshore were 13 species, higher than 1% of the total polychaete individuals. Heteromastus filiformis, known as the most dominant species before the construction of the dike, was the most dominant species in offshore, which collectively account for 54% of the total polychaete individuals. In inshore, the seven species were dominant, higher than 1% of the total individuals. Lumbrineris longifolia, Polydora sp., Capitella capitata, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, known as pollution tolerant species, contributed to higher than 75% of the total individuals in inshore. Multivariate statistical analyses, non-metric multidimensional scaling, showed apparent difference in polychaete community structure between inshore and offshore, and also difference between inner sites and outer sites of inshore around the water gate. Sediment characteristics (total organic carbon and nitrogen, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide) measured in this study also supported to this result. Therefore, this indicates that the offshore provides better benthic environments for polychaete habitation than the inshore, and the inshore around the water gate shows improving benthic environment, compared to the inner inshore.

Recently the offshore wind turbine development is requested to be installed off south-west coast and Jeju island in Korea. Reliable and robust support structures are required to meet the demand on the offshore wind turbine in harsh and rapidly varying environmental conditions. Monopile is the most preferred substructure in shallow water with long term experiences from the offshore gas and oil industries. This paper presents an optimum design of a monopile connection with grouted transition piece (TP) for the reliable and cost-effective design purposes. First, design loads are simulated for a 5 MW offshore wind turbine in site conditions off the southwest coast of Korea. Second, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the design sensitivity of geometry and material parameters of monopile connection based on the ultimate and fatigue capacities according to DNV standards. Next, optimization is conducted to minimize the total mass and resulted in 30% weight reduction and the optimum geometry and material properties of the monopile substructure of the fixed offshore wind turbine.

In this study, the capability of an existing analysis method for the fluid-structure-soil interaction of an offshore wind turbine is expanded to account for the geometric nonlinearity and sea water drag force. The geometric stiffness is derived to take care of the large displacement due to the deformation of the tower structure and the rotation of the footing foundation utilizing linearized stability analysis theory. Linearizing the term in Morison's equation concerning the drag force, its effects are considered. The developed analysis method is applied to the earthquake response analysis of a 5 MW offshore wind turbine. Parameters which can influence dynamic behaviors of the system are identified and their significance are examined.
This paper calculates the mating dynamic forces of a semi-submersible offshore structure's topside module, where a hull moored in the sea is combined with a topside module carried by a heavy lift vessel, as a mating installation method. The environmental conditions include various wave directions and wave heights, with constant wind and current speeds. Appropriate ballast and de-ballast plans for the heavy lift vessel and hull of the semi-rig should be performed in order to safely obtain these forces, whereas a fixed platform or the GBS (Gravity based structure) type of offshore structure only needs a ballast plan for the heavy lift vessel. From this paper, the allowable wave height or wave direction for the mating procedure can be investigated based on the standard DAF (Dynamic amplitude factor) of the rules and regulations.
