  • In this study, the present deployment of the multiple wave energy converters (WECs) in a floating wind-wave hybrid power generation platform was estimated considering the interaction effect among WEC buoys. The interaction processes of multiple buoys were very complex, since scattered and radiated waves from each buoy affected the others in the array. The interaction analysis of the diffraction and radiation problem by the array of WECs was applied by matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM). The analytical solutions were compared with the results of numerical calculation based on WAMIT. The overall performance of 24 WECs installed in the hybrid power generation platform was evaluated by the q-factor representing the interaction effect among buoys.

  • Recently, the wind power has experienced great attentions and growths among many renewable energy sources. To increase the power generation performance and economic feasibility, the size of wind turbine (WT) is getting bigger and most of wind power plants are being constructed on offshore. Therefore, the maintenance cost is relatively high because boats or helicopters are needed operators to reach the WT. In order to combat this kind of problem, remote monitoring and control system for the WT is needed. In this paper, the small-scale WT monitoring and control system is implemented using wireless sensor network technologies. To do this, sensor devices are installed to measure and send the WT status and control device is installed to receive control message for specific operation. The WT is managed by control center through graphic user interface (GUI) based monitoring and control software. Also, smart device based web-program is implemented to make the remote monitoring of the WT possible even though operators are not in control room.

  • Recently, offshore structures for eco-friendly energy, such as wind and solar power, have been developed to address the problem of insufficient land space; in the case of energy generation, they are designed on a considerable scale. Therefore, the scalability of offshore structures is crucial. The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) developed multi-linked floating offshore structures composed of floating bodies and connection beams for floating photovoltaic systems. Large-scale floating photovoltaic systems are mainly designed in a manner that expands through the connection between modules and demonstrates a difference in structural response with connection conditions. A fluid-structure coupled analysis was performed for the multi-linked floating offshore structures. First, the wave load acting on the multi-linked offshore floating structures was calculated through wave load analysis for various wave load conditions. The response amplitude operators (RAOs) for the motions and structural response of the unit structure were calculated by performing finite element analysis. The effects of connection conditions were analyzed through comparative studies of RAOs and the response's maximum magnitude and occurrence location. Hence, comparing the cases of a hinge connection affecting heave and pitch motions and a fixed connection, the maximum bending stress of the structure decreased by approximately 2.5 times, while the mooring tension increased by approximately 20%, confirmed to be the largest change in bending stress and mooring tension compared to fixed connection. Therefore, the change in structural response according to connection condition makes it possible to design a higher structural safety of the structural member through the hinge connection in the construction of a large-scale multi-linked floating offshore structure for large-scale photovoltaic systems in which some unit structures are connected. However, considering the tension of the mooring line increases, a safety evaluation of the mooring line must be performed.

  • A bus duct system for wind tower is introduced. A marine cable has been widely used in wind tower or various offshore structures. However, as the electric load capacity is increases, large number of cable lines must be used to cover the huge amount of electric capacities. Therefore, the installation of the cable lines becomes very difficult due to the heavy weight and volume of the cables. On the other hand, by using a single bus duct system line, the power capacity amount of 16 cables can be delivered with significantly compacted form. However, unlike flexible cables, the bus duct is relatively stiff which could generate the resonance phenomenon in the operating condition of the wind tower. In this study, the vibration characteristics of the bus duct are investigated and its long-term reliability during the life time of the wind tower is verified.

  • This paper proposes to strengthen the technological capabilities of small and medium enterprises on the establishment of a component standardization system and the localization of parts, which is the basis of the marine wind industry. The wind industry is a natural energy industry that countries around the world are paying attention to, and continues to invest and research and development. In particular, most companies are focusing on research and investment in component development, the smallest unit. Therefore, it is believed that we should focus on the three most fundamental and underlying wind industry, an eco-friendly energy industry that could determine the fate of the nation in the future. First, an understanding of the roadmap for standardization should be prioritized. Second, it is necessary to establish a domestic standardization of international standards according to domestic conditions. Third, localization of high value-added single products and components should be achieved by lowering dependence on overseas imports. In the future, it is hoped that the wind industry, centered on small and medium-sized enterprises, will become a solid-based national industry and be completed as a national infrastructure leading the global wind market.

  • A wind-speed estimation at the arbitrary elevations is key component for the design of the offshore wind energy structures and the computation of the wind-wave generation. However, the wind-speed estimation of the target elevation has been carried out by using the typical functions and their typical parameters, e.g., power and logarithmic functions because the available wind speed data is limited to the specific elevation, such as 2~3m, 10 m, and so on. In this study, the parameters of the vertical profile functions are estimated with optimal and analyzed the parameter ranges using the HeMOSU-1 platform wind data monitored at the eight different locations. The results show that the mean value of the exponent of the power function is 0.1, which is significantly lower than the typically recommended value, 0.14. The values of the exponent, the friction velocity, and the roughness parameters are in the ranges 0.0~0.3, 0~10 (m/s), and 0.0~1.0 (m), respectively. The parameter ranges differ from the typical ranges because the atmospheric stability condition is assumed as the neutral condition. To improve the estimation accuracy, the atmospheric condition should be considered, and a more general (non-linear) vertical profile functions should be introduced to fit the diverse profile patterns and parameters.

  • The wave spectrum was generated from wave data measured at the Chagwi-do site in Jeju, where a 10MW class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system will be installed. The latching control technology (Sheng et al.[2015]) was applied in order to improve the extracted power from WEC (Wave Energy Converter), which is heaving in corresponding irregular waves. The peak period as a representative value of irregular waves was used when we determined the latching duration. From the numerical results in the time-domain analysis, the latching control technology can significantly improve the extracted power about 50%.

  • For the diversity of energy supply system and the improvement in the habitants' living environments of the islands, it is possible and necessary to use the natural energy as resources of the electric power generation system. In this study, the characteristics of wind and solar radiation on 4 islands offshore Namhae-Tongyoung of Korea were measured for one year from November 2010 to October 2011 and analyzed in relation to energy resources survey. As a result of measurement and analysis, the respective wind rose diagrams of 4 islands were made, and showed that the frequencies of wind directions were quite different from among the islands. The Rayleigh probability distribution of wind velocity showed that the wind speeds of KR and SS were mainly 2~5m/s, and the respective quantities of electric power generation of 4 islands were shown to be different. The variation of solar radiations and potential quantity of those uses were measured to be similar to each other among 4 islands.

  • Turbulent flow analysis around a wind turbine blade was performed to evaluate the power performance of offshore wind turbine. Fluent package was utilized to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in non-inertial rotating coordinates. The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence closure and the grid system combining structured and unstructured grids was generated. In the first, lift and drag forces of 2-D foil section were calculated and compared with existing experimental data for the validation. Then torque and thrust of the wind turbine blade having NACA 4-series sections were calculated with fixed pitch angle and rpm. Tip speed ratio was varied by changing wind speed. In the next, three kinds of end plate were attached at the tip of blade in order to increase the power of the wind turbine. Among them the end plate attached at the suction side of the blade was found to be most effective. Furthermore, performance analysis with tilt angle and rake was also performed.
