  • Flow force is the additional unbalanced force acting on the valve spool by fluid flow, excluding the static pressure force that is offset on the spool land wall at the same magnitude. When designing the valve spool, it is assumed that the same average value of static pressure is applied to the inlet and outlet spool land wall in one chamber. However, the high velocity of the fluid flow by the inlet or outlet metering orifice creates unbalanced pressure distribution and generates additional force in the opposite direction to that of the solenoid attraction force. This flow force has a negative effect on the control performance of the EPPR valve, which needs to develop uniform output pressure along the entire spool control range. In this study, we developed a 3D model of the EPPR valve and conducted flow force characteristic analysis using CFD S/W (ANSYS FLUENT). The alleviated flow force model was derived by adjusting the design parameters of the spool notch.

  • Three dimensional numerical calculations were carried out for two different combustion chambers with the offset valve in order to investigate the swirl and the squish effects on the flow fields. The modified K-.epsilon. turbulence model considering the change of the density under the condition of the rapid compression and expansion of the pistion was used. During the compression process, it was found that the squish flow which controls the subsequent combustion process was produced due to the piston bowl in the bowl piston type combustion chambers but not for the flat piston type. The swirl velocity close to the solid body rotation was maintained in the flat piston type combustion chambers, but for the bowl piston type a resulting from the change of the solid body rotation was generated in the radial-circumferential plane. For the swirl ratio effect, as the swirl ratio increases, it was found that a large and strong vortex was generated in the radial-circumferential plane of bowl piston type combustion chambers because of the strong inward flows from the combustion chamber wall. These computational results were compared with the results of LDA measurement.

  • For the purpose of helping development of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the spray behaviors and fuel distributions were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The experimental engine is a swirl type GBI engine with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurement of the fuel distributions. The effects of SCV opening angle and the Injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset an91e on the fuel distributions characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the SCV opening angle had a great effect on the fuel distributions in the late stage of compression process by changing flow fields in the combustion chamber.

  • This paper is the fifth investigation on the methods of evaluating flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In previous studies, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation may lead to serious problems. In addition, though the velocity profiles were improved as the measuring position went downstream, the distributions were far from ideal regardless of the valve angle and evaluation position. The eccentricities were also not sufficiently small to disregard the effect on impulse swirl meter (ISM) measurement. Therefore, the effect of these distribution and eccentricity changes according to the positions needs to be analyzed to discuss the method of flow characteristics estimation. In this context, the effects of evaluation position on the steady flow characteristics were studied. For this purpose, the swirl coefficient and swirl ratio were assessed and compared via measurement of the conventional ISM and calculation based on the velocity by particle image velocimetry(PIV) from 1.75B, 1.75 times bore position apart from the cylinder head, to the 6.00B position. The results show that the swirl coefficients by ISM strictly decrease and the curves as a function of the valve lift become smooth and linear as the measuring position goes downstream. However, the values through the calculation based on the PIV are higher at the farther position due to the approach of the tangential velocity profile to ideal. In addition, there exists an offset effect between the velocity distribution and eccentricity in the low valve lift range when the coefficients are estimated based on the swirl center. Finally, the curve of the swirl ratio by ISM and by PIV evaluation as a function the measuring position intersect around 5.00B plane except at $26^{\circ}$ valve angle.

  • For the purpose of development of a GDI engine, the in-cylinder phenomena, such as the spray behaviors, fuel distributions, unburned fuel, and flame characteristics were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The GDI engine was equipped with a swirl type electronic injector and SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used far the measurements of fuel distributions. The effects of the injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset angle on the in-cylinder phenomena were investigated. As a result, it was found that the injected fuel collided with the bottom of the bowl and moved upward along the exhaust side wall of piston bowl. This fuel vapor played an important role in the instance of spark ignition. The unburned fuel and flame characteristics were greatly influenced by the injector specifications.

  • Using trace etching method in this study, we measure the energy of argon ions generated in VEBA System which is composed of Marx Generater and Pulse Forming Line. In this system the electron beam of 240 kV, 30 kA, 60 ns is generated. Argon ions are formed through the electron beam ionization of a gas cloud injected by a fast puff valve. Thus argon ions are accelerated into vacuum drift tube by a virtual cathode and seperated with electron beam, consequently, they heat the trace etching plates made of aluminum thin films. The energy of argon ions are determined by the number of aluminum thin films penetrated by the ions. This experimental value corresponds with the theoretical value.

  • This study is the second investigation on the steady flow characteristics of an SI engine with a semi-edge combustion chamber as a function of the port shape with varying evaluation positions. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measured from 1.75B, 1.75 times of bore position apart from the bottom of head, to 6.00B positions using particle - image velocimetry. The flow patterns were examined with both a straight and a helical port. The velocity profiles, streamlines, and centers of swirl were almost the same at the same valve lift regardless of the measuring position, which is quite different from the case of the pent-roof combustion chamber. All the eccentricity values of the straight port were out of distortion criterion 0.15 through the lifts and the position. However, the values of the helical port exceeded the distortion criterion by up to 4 mm lift, but decreased rapidly above the 3.00B position and the 5 mm lift. There always existed a relative offset effect in the evaluation of the swirl coefficient using the PIV method due to the difference of the ideal impulse swirl meter velocity profile assumption, except for the cylinder-center-base estimation that was below 4 mm of the straight port. Finally, it was concluded that taking the center as an evaluation basis and the assumption about the axial velocity profile did not have any qualitative effect on swirl evaluation, but affected the value owing to the detailed profile.
