  • A method of full wave rectification is proposed which is accomplished by an inverter circuit including R-feed back. Both halves of the input cycle can be presented in the out put by composing a conductive half cycle and an inactive half cycle substituted by feed back in the cut off state.

  • Since most education organizations such as Universities have a plenty of PCs, much electric power can be wasted if their power states are not managed properly. This paper introduces the RPM(Remote Power Management) software system implemented to reduce a waste of PC power in Universities. The System manager can monitor power state of all PCs in a University and turn off PCs or change power states of PCs to low power states. The RPM consists of three software modules. First, Power Controller, which is installed in each user PC, saves the power by changing low power state by utilizing low power algorithm proposed in this paper. Also it reports power state of its PC to Power Server on the state changed. Second, Power Server module gathers power state information of all PCs, stores them in a DB, and sends all or some parts of the information to Power Viewer whenever the manager asks. The manager can turn off or change a certain PC to low power state. We evaluated the performance of power saving for the RPM and the result showed achievement of 40% power saving.

  • This paper introduces the partial melting process for solder application and characterization of its possibility using off-eutectic Pb-Sn alloy. In order to show that the liquid phase in the semi-liquid state maintains the wettability as the single-phase liquid, the wetting balance test are conducted with varying temperatures and compositions. The results are then compared with the surface tension of liquid, both measured and calculated, to examine the correlation. The results from this investigation indicate that the partial melting can yield satisfactory solder joints as long as the liquid phase acquires sufficient chemical activity. At a condition where the partial melting is effective, a direct correlation between the wettability and the surface tension is found to exist. All alloys are found to show a reasonable wettability in semi-liquid state.

  • The state-of-art third generation wave prediction model WAM was applied to the Korean seas for a winter monsoon period of January 1997. The wind field used in the present study is the global NSCAT-ERS/NCEP blended winds, which was further interpolated using a bi-cubic spline interpolator to fine grid limited area shallow water regime surrounding the Korean seas. To evaluate and investigate the accuracy of WAM, the hindcasted wave heights are compared with observed data from two shallow water buoys off Chil-Bal and Duk-Juk. A detailed study has been carried with the various meteorological parameters in observed buoy data and its inter-dependency on model computed wave fields was also investigated. The RMS error between the observation and model computed wave heights results to 0.489 for Chil-Bal and 0.417 for Duk-Juk. A similar comparison between the observation and interpolated winds off Duk-Juk show RMS error of 2.28 which suggest a good estimate for wave modelling studies.

  • Cultivation of a biocontrol agent on a certain medium often results in reduced biocontrol efficacy and alters physiological state. In our previous study, Burkholderia gladioli strain B543 with long-term subculture on tryptic soy agar resulted in significantly reduced biocontrol ability against cucumber damping-off caused by P. ultimum. Therefore, we investigated the influence of laboratory culturing media on biocontrol activity and physiological state of Burkholderia gladioli strain B543 by using long-term repeated culture on a certain medium. When isolate B543 were successionally cultured on King's B agar (KBA), tryptic soy agar, nutrient agar (NA), or soil extract agar more than 20 times, the isolate cultured on KBA or NA showed a significantly enhanced biocontrol efficacy and higher population density in the rhizosphere of cucumber compared to that of the others. However, the isolates cultured on KBA more than 20 times showed the lowest production of protease, siderophore, or antifungal substance(s), measured by skim milk agar, Chrome-Azurol-S agar, and potato dextrose agar amended with 10% of the culture filtrate, respectively. Our results suggest that adaptation to proper culturing medium can alter biocontrol ability and physiological state, and we must consider laboratory media in optimizing the use of biocontrol agents.

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain the dynamic characteristics of an absorption refrigerator powered by solar energy by experiments. Since the absorption refrigerator power by solar energy should have the characteristics which is suitable for the intermittence and rarity of solar energy, not only the characteristics of the steady state operations but also the partial load and the transient operations should be considered. The minimum available temperature of the storage tank should be known, and the absorption refrigerator can be suitably selected for air-conditioning systems. In this study, the experimental data of the transient state for on-off and warming-up operations has been obtained. Also the experiments are performed which test the minimum available temperature of the storage tank. The results show that it takes 1 hour to get to the steady state of the absorption refrigerator, and the minimum available temperature of the storage tank is about $68^{\circ}C$, and show that in the partial load operations the performance of the absorption refrigerator is improved by applying the modified control method to on-off operations.

  • The mode-switching control of transient process is important to grid-connected 400 Hz solid-state power supply systems. Therefore, this paper analyzes the principle of on-grid and islanding operation of the system with or without local loads in the grid-connected process and provides a theoretical study of the effect of different switching sequences on the mode-switching transient process. The conclusion is that the mode switch (MS) must be turned on before the solid-state switch (STS) in the on-grid process and that STS must be turned off before the MS in the off-grid process. A strategy of mode-switching smooth control for transient process of the system is proposed, including its concrete steps. The strategy utilizes the average distribution of peak currents and the smooth adjustment of peak currents and phases to achieve a no-shock grid connection. The simulation and experimental results show that the theoretical analysis is correct and that the method is effective.

  • A simple realization of an alignment-free wireless power transmission (WPT) system is presented in this letter. The WPT system consists of a transmitter with three reconfigurable modes corresponding to various controllable magnetic field directions in the azimuthal plane and an algorithm for the optimum mode selection carried by sensing the reflected voltage of the system. Twelve light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used to confirm the on- and off-state of LEDs powered wirelessly by the transmitter at every $15^{\circ}$ of the azimuthal plane. A criterion voltage from the reflected power of the system is found by using the correlation between the reflected voltage and the on- and off-state of the LEDs. Simply by continuous; monitoring of the voltage from the system, the system maintains power to the LEDs. The system is realized by MATLAB/Simulink and a National Instrument data acquisition device (DAQ) board. Measurements using the system show on-state LEDs in the azimuthal plane except at the angles of $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, and $300^{\circ}$.

  • Wildlife ecologists and biologists recapture deer to collect tracking data from deer collars or wait for a drop-off of a deer collar construction that is automatically detached and disconnected. The research teams need to manage a base camp with medical trailers, helicopters, and airplanes to capture deer or wait for several months until the deer collar drops off of the deer's neck. We propose an intelligent robust base-station research with a low-cost and time saving method to obtain recording sensor data from their collars to a listener node, and readings are obtained without opening the weatherproof deer collar. We successfully designed the and implemented a robust base station system for automatically collecting data of the collars and listener motes in harsh wilderness environments. Intelligent solutions were also analyzed for improved data collections and pattern predictions with drone-based detection and tracking algorithms.

  • This paper introduces the application of supervisory monitoring system for substation automation based on IEC 61850. The objective of proposed system is detection of such a malfunction or degradation of devices. The supervisory monitoring procedure consists of a two step - topology processor and state estimation. The topology processor using artificial intelligence is a preprocessing step of state estimation. Topology processor identifies the topology structure of switches in substation and detects an error of ON/OFF state data. The state estimation is an algorithm that minimizes an error between optimal estimation values and real values. The proposed system is applied to standard digital substation based on IEC 61850 for performance verification.
