  • FT process is a technology of chemical reactions that converts a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons. During the FT process unreacted gas, known as Off-gas which has low-calorie, is discharged. In this study, we developed an engine that utilize simulated Off-gas, and studied the characteristics of the engine. The off-gas composition is assumed to be $H_2$ 70%, CO 15%, $CO_2$ 15% respectively. Under stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, the experiment was conducted at WOT and IMEP 0.3 Mpa changing compression ratio. Ignition timing was applied with MBT timing. Maximum indicated thermal efficiency 37% was achieved at compression ratio 15 under WOT. CO, $CO_2$ and $NO_x$ were influenced by changing compression ratio, and CO emission was satisfied with the US Tier 4 standard for nonroad engine over the entire experimental conditions.

  • This paper presents the FEM analysis results on the deformation behavior safety of automatic cut-off horizontal and conventional vertical gas valves. Based on the FEM analysis, the primary maximum deformation of $4.4{\mu}m$ was formed on the right end side of a valve body when the internal gas pressure was supplied on the screw port and gas discharge port of an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve. And the secondary maximum deformation of $2.9{\mu}m$ was formed on the end side of safety valve port. This small deformation of an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve is strongly related to the balanced design of a horizontal gas valve main body, which is composed of a screw part, gas outlet port, port for a stem and spindle shaft assembly, and safety valve port. But, the primary maximum deformation of 0.076mm was formed on the upper part of a conventional automatic cut-off vertical gas valve when the internal gas pressure was supplied on the screw port and gas discharge port. And the secondary maximum deformation of 0.055mm was formed on the left end side of a gas outlet port. This may effect on the sealing clearance of o-ring that is inserted on the groove of an automatic cut-off unit. Thus, this paper recommends an automatic cut-off horizontal gas valve compared with that of a conventional gas valve for a gas leakage free mechanism of a LPG cylinder valve.

  • In this study, the validity of reducing the number of gas turbine stages designed for a nitrogen Brayton cycle coupled to a sodium-cooled fast reactor was assessed. The turbine performance was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations under different off-design conditions controlled by a reduced flow rate and reduced rotational speed. Two different multistage gas turbines designed to extract almost the same specific work were selected: two- and three-stage turbines (mid-span stage loading coefficient: 1.23 and 1.0, respectively). Real gas properties were considered in the CFD simulation in accordance with the Peng-Robinson's equation of state. According to the CFD results, the off-design performance of the two-stage turbine is comparable to that of the three-stage turbine. Moreover, compared to the three-stage turbine, the two-stage turbine generates less entropy across the shock wave. The results indicate that under both design and off-design conditions, increasing the stage loading coefficient for a fewer number of turbine stages is effective in terms of performance and size. Furthermore, the Ellipse law can be used to assess off-design performance and increasing exponent of the expansion ratio term better predicts the off-design performance with a few stages (two or three).

  • According to the Off-Gas Generation and Use Status Report (2015), Off-gas from the steel industry is estimated to be 80 million tons per year in Korea. If this is purified, large amounts of hydrogen can be produced, so active research and development related to hydrogen purification facilities is underway. In this study, a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) was conducted by analyzing the components of a off-gas based hydrogen purification facility and investigating risk factors. The risk analysis results were determined to be at an acceptable level and will be used as basic data to improve the safety of facilities considering the risks of hydrogen.

  • A safety device with shut-off function was developed for preventing intentional accidents that might happen by separating of cutting hoses connected to pressure regulators used in residential LP gas facility. For the verification of function and field adaptability, the safety device with shut-off function was tested in the state of joining the device to the regulator and a field test was carried out at home. This study shows that, at the inlet pressure of 0.07-1.56 MPa, the device shuts off the gas within the 5m length of hose regardless of the installation condition of the regulator. The shut-off flow rate increases in the order of perpendicular upward, horizontal and perpendicular downward. From the results of the field tests carried out at home for 5 months, there appears no problem using a gas range or a boiler. If the developed shut-off device is commercialized and distributed in the market the intentional accidents occurred by cutting or separating hoses can be prevented remarkably.

  • In this study, an in-house program to predict steady state operation of micro gas turbines is constructed using MATLAB. The program consists of two parts: design and off-design simulations. The program is fully modular in its structure, and performance of each component (compressor, combustor, turbine, recuperative heat exchanger and pipe elements) is calculated in a separate calculation module using mass and energy balances as well as models for off-design characteristics. The off-design modules of compressor and turbine use performance maps, which are program inputs. The off-design operation of a micro gas turbine under development was predicted by the program. The prediction results were compared with those by commercial software, and the validity of the in-house program was confirmed.

  • The supply of oxygen for aeration is the largest energy consumer at activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. Replacement of less efficient aeration systems with fine pore aeration devices can save up to 50 percent of aeration energy costs. The purpose of this study was the diagnosis and evaluation of a domestic wastewater aeration system by the off-gas method which had been studied by US EPA and ASCE. For this study, an off-gas analyzer and its hood were made to collect off-gas. Also, a vacuum pump was connected to the analyzer to make suction of off-gas. Experiments were conducted at a domestic activated sludge wastewater treatment plant which had a single spiral roll aeration system installed with P.E tube diffuser. Data on OTE(f), SOTE(pw), OUR, and air flow rate were obtained from these experiments. In case of replacing an aeration system, it is recommended that it should be replaced with perforated membrane disc or ceramic disc fine bubble diffusers installed in a full floor coverage or grid pattern.

  • Micro gas turbines are designed with low turbine inlet temperature and pressure ratio. To overcome the efficiency defect of the simple cycle, adoption of the recuperator is an inevitable choice. In addition to the design performance, we should also pay attention to the off-design performance of gas turbines since they usually operate at part-load conditions lot a considerable amount of their lifetime. This study analyzes off-design performance characteristics of micro gas turbines and addresses the importance of the recuperation process doting the part load operation. Comparative analyses have been performed to evaluate the part load performance differences among various design and operating options : simple vs recuperative cycles, single vs two shaft configurations, various operating strategies for the single shaft configuration, and current vs advanced engines. Major finding is that maintaining high turbine exhaust temperature is crucial for efficient operation of micro gas turbines.

  • During the defrosting process, the temperature in the cabinet of a showcase becomes high as compared to the setting point, which is not desirable for stored foods or materials. It is necessary to develop a more efficient defrosting method to prevent large temperature fluctuation. In this study, the performance of a showcase refrigeration system with three evaporators is investigated by employing a hot-gas bypass defrosting technology in the system under frosting and defrosting conditions. The operating characteristics are compared with those for the on-off defrosting method that has been widely used in current products. As a result, the hot-gas bypass defrosting method shows higher refrigerating capacity and less temperature fluctuation than the on-off method under frosting/defrosting conditions, while the power input is relatively high for the hot-gas bypass method.
