  • Virtual Manufacturing is a technology to facilitate effective product development and agile production by computer models representing the physical and logical schema and the behavior of real manufacturing systems including manufacturing resources, environments and products. For the successful application of this technology, a virtual factory as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential. In this research, we constructed a sophisticated virtual factory model of an automotive company's paint shop, and performed precise simulations of unit cells, lines and whole plant operations for collision check and off-line programming. It is expected that this virtual paint shop is useful for achieving time and cost savings in many manufacturing preparation and planning activities of new car development processes.

  • Most of shoes manufacturing processes are not yet automated, it puts restrictions on increasing of productivity. Among them, adhesive application processes particularly are holding the most workers and working hours. In addition, its working conditions are very poor due to the toxicity of adhesive agents. In case of automating adhesive application processes by using robots, the robot teaching by playback is difficult to produce high productivity because the kinds of shoes to be taught mount up to several thousands. Therefore, it is essential to generate the robot working paths automatically according to the kind, the size, and the right and left of shoes, and also to teach them to the robot automatically ...

  • Welding/soldering automation is one of the most important manufacturing issues in order to lower the cost, increase the quality, and avoid labor problems. An off-line programming, OLP, is one of the powerful methods to solve this kind of diver sity problem, Unless an OLP system is ready for the path optimization in welding/soldering, a waste of time and cost is unavoidable due to an inefficient path in welding/soldering processes. Therefore, this study attempts to obtain path optimization using a genetic algorithm based on artificial intelligences. The problem of the welding path optimization is defined as conventional TSP (traveling salesman problem), but still paths have to go through welding lines. An improved genetic algorithm was suggested and the problem was formulated as a TSP problem considering ...

  • We formulated the multi-robot trajectory problem into a series of NLP problem, each of which is that of finding the optimal tip positions of the robots for the next time step. The NLP problem is composed of an objective function and three constraints, namely: a) Joint position limits, b) Joint velocity limits, and c) Collision-avoidance constraints. By solving a series of NLP problem, optimally coordinated trajectories can be determined without requiring any prior path information. This is a novel departure from the previous approach in which either all paths or at least one path is assumed to be given. Practical application of the developed method is for optimal synthesis of multiple robot trajectories in off-line. To test the validity and effectiveness of the method, numerical examples are illustrated.

  • This paper presents an architecture and control logic of a Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC) which is one of the important elements under Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. To implement FMC, it is very important to develop a software which can control and monitor the overall system in an integrated environment. Our primary concern in this research is not to develop individual systems, but to integrate them in the hierarchical control level. Progress on the research of integrating CAD/CAM, Process Planning, Off-line Robot Programming and Simulation module into FMC control system is reported. FMC hardware system used here has an Automated Storage & Retrieval System (AS/RS), a conveyor system, a transfer robot, a CNC milling machine, a bar-code system, and an IBM PC/AT as Cell Control System (CCS). In order to demonstrate the operational result, the name plates, text-carved aluminium plates, are manufactured by this system.

  • An integrated optimal control modelhas been formulated to address dynamic freeway diversion control process. The purpose of this paper is to develop an effective and efficient approach for simultaneous]v solving optimal control measures, including on-ramp metering rates, off-ramp diversion rates, and g/C ratios for traffic signals, on a real-time basis. By approximating the flow-density relation with a two-segment linear function, the non-linear optimal control problem can be simplified into a set of piece-wised linear programming models and solved with the proposed SLP algorithm. consequently, an effective on-line feedback method has been developed for integrated freeway corridor control in the framework of the ITS

  • This paper is concerned with development of digital assembly cell. Automotive industries, try to find out new welding technologies to replace the existing spot welding which is not appropriate anymore. Because of many advantages like good accessibility, welding quality and fast welding speed, laser welding seems the most appropriate solution for automobile manufactures. To apply this technology to welding of car body, experiments must be conducted according to material, geometry and layer in welding area. Based on the data of these experiments, the laser welding process and the quality of stitches are identified. And then, the comparison between the requirements of welding and the potential of equipments allows selecting the best equipments. By using the digital manufacturing, the configurations of laser welding cell are carried out. After all, the optimal laser welding cell is chosen by the evaluation of alternative cells with technical and organizational criteria.

  • The basic function of on industrial robot system is to move objects in the workspace fast and accurately. One difficulty in performing this function is that the path of robot should be programmed to avoid the collision with obstacles, that is, tools, or facilities. This path planning requires much off-line programming time. In this study, a SOM technique to find the collision-free path of robot in real time is developed. That is, the collision-free map is obtained through SOM learning and a collision-free path is found using the map in real time during the robot operation. A learning procedure to obtain the map and an algorithm to find a short path using the map is developed and simulated. Finally, a path smoothing method to stabilize the motion of robot is suggested.
