Purpose: The aim of this study was to introduce a category of jaw lesions comprising cysts and tumors associated with scalloped borders. Materials and Methods: General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Scopus, as well as an authoritative textbook, were used to find relevant studies by using keywords such as "jaw lesion," "jaw disease," "scalloping," "scalloped border," "scalloped margin," "irregular border," and "irregular margin." Out of 289 articles, 252 records were removed because they were duplicates, did not have a relevant title, or did not mention the frequency of findings described using the term "scalloped border." Finally, 37 closely related articles were chosen. Results: According to the relevant literature, scalloped borders are found most frequently in ameloblastoma, followed by simple bone cyst, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst. Conclusion: The lesions most frequently reported to have scalloped borders are ameloblastoma, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, simple bone cyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst.

This is a reprospective study on the care of odontogenic infections in admission patients with geriatric diseases. The study was based on a series of 480 patients at Dong San Medical Center, Wonju Christian Hospital and Il San Health Insurance Hospital, From Jan. 1, 2000, to Dec. 31, 2002. The Obtained results were as follows: 1. The systemic malignant tumor was the most frequent cause of the geriatric diseases with odontogenic infectious diseases, and refractory lung disease, systemic heart disease, type II diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular disease, bone & joint disease, senile psychologic disease were next in order of frequency. 2. Male prediction(57.5%) was existed in the odontogenic infectious patients with geriatric diseases. But, there were female prediction in senile psychologic disease, systemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. 3. The most common age group of the odontogenic infectious patient with geriatric disease was the sixty decade(47.9%), followed by the seventy & eighty decade in order. 4. In the contents of chief complaints on the odontogenic infectious patients with geriatric disease, peak incidence was occurred as toothache(52.7%), followed by extraction wish, tooth mobility, oral bleeding, oral ulcer, fracture of restoration, gingival swelling in order. 5. In the diagnosis group of odontogenic infectious diseases, periodontitis, pulpitis & periapical abscess were more common. 6. In the treatment group of odontogenic infectious diseases, the most frequent incidence(34.2%) was showed in primary endodontic treatment (pulp extirpation, occlusal reduction and canal opening drainage) and followed by scaling, incision & drainage, only drugs, pulp capping, restoration in order.

This is a retrospective study on the care of odontogenic infections in admission patients with major bleeding disorders. The study was based on a series of 514 patients treated at Dong San Medical Center, Wonju Christian Hospital and Il San Health Insurance Hospital, from Jan. 1, 2000, to Dec. 31, 2002. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The cardiovascular disease was the most frequent cause of the systemic diseases with major bleeding disorders, and liver disease, cerebrovascular disease and renal failure were next in order of frequency. But, there was the most frequent dental consultation in the liver disease, owing to the many odontogenic infectious diseases. 2. Male prediction (66.3%) was almost existed in the odontogenic infectious patients with major bleeding disorders. But, there was slight female prediction (53.4%) in the cardiovascular disease. 3. The most common age group of the odontogenic infectious patients with major bleeding disorders was the fifty decade(27.2%), followed by the forty, sixty & thirty decade in order. 4. In the contents of chief complaints on the odontogenic infectious patients with major bleeding disorder, peak incidence was occurred as toothache (42.2%), followed by intraoral bleeding, ulcer pain, dental extraction in order. 5. In the diagnosis group of odontogenic infectious diseases, periodontitis, pulpitis and periapical abscess were more common. 6. In the treatment group of odontogenic infectious diseases, the most frequent incidence(44.2%) was showed in primary endodontic drainage(pulp extirpation, occlusal reduction & canal opening drainage) and followed by the incision & drainage, the medications & oral hygiene instruction, scaling, indirect pulp capping in order.
The author studied on the 128 cases of benign odontogenic tumors which had been diagnosed with biopsy during the period of Jan. 1989 to Dec. 1998 at the Kyungpook National University Hospital, Yeungnam University Medical Center, Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center, and Taegu Catholic Medical Center. This study contained the clinicostatistical analysis of the frequency in relation to sex, age, locations, chief complaints, duration, radiographic findings, recurrence, teeth, and treatment methods. The results were as follow : 1. Of a total of 128 benign odontogenic tumors, ameloblastomas(57 cases; 44.5%) and odontomas (44 cases ; 34.4%) mostly occupied. The other types of lesions were 8 calcifying odontogenic cysts, 7 benign cementoblastomas, 4 myxomas, 3 adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, 2 calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, 2 ameloblastic fibro-odontomas, and 1 odontogenic fibroma. 2. In age and sex distribution, benign odontogenic tumors occured slightly more often in males(53.9%) than females(46.1%) and the majority of cases(79.7%) were found during 2nd, 3rd, and 4th decade. 3. There was a predilection for mandibular lesions(mandible-maxilla ratio, 2.6 : 1). 4. The most common chief complaint was swelling(29.7%) and in respect to duration, the cases less than 1 year(50.0%) mainly appeared. 5. There were 7 cases(13.0%) of recurrence on ameloblastoma and there was no recurrence in the others. 6. In Ameloblastoma It commonly occured during 3rd and 4th decade(59.6%) and mean age was 30.2 years. The majority of cases were occurred in mandible(96.5%) , especially mandibular molar and angle area(71.9%). The most common chief complaint was swelling(47.4%) and in respect to duration, the cases less than 1 year(52.6%) mainly appeared. In relation to teeth, there were resorption of root(52.6%), displacement of teeth(31.6%), and in relation to impacted teeth(43.9%). There was higher recurrence rate in the cases by conservative treatment(14.7%) than radical treatment(10.0%). As regards radiographic findings, conservative treatments were prevalent in the cases of unilocular type(85.7%) as compared with multilocular type(48.5%). and there was higherrecurrence rate in the cases of multilocular type(18.2%) than unilocular type(4.8%). As regards the type of treatment in relation to age, conservative treatments were prevalent in patients younger than 20 years of age. 7. In Odontomas It commonly occured during 2nd decade(50.0%) and in maxillary anterior teeth(40.9%). The most common chief complaint was delayed retention and permanent impaction of teeth(72.7%), and most frequently associated with impacted teeth(79.5%).
Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is a benign cystic intraosseous tumor of odontogenic origin. An infection of a KCOT is not common because KCOT is a benign developmental neoplasm. Moreover, a severe deep neck space infection with compromised airway caused by infected KCOT is rare. This report presents a 60-year-old male patient with a severe deep neck space infection related to an infected KCOT due to cortical bone perforation and rupture of the exudate. Treatment of the deep neck space infection and KCOT are reported.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising within the lining of an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a rare occurrence. Although potentially locally destructive, OKC is a benign odontogenic process that typically presents with clinical and radiographic features characteristic of a benign intraosseous neoplasm. We present the clinical and radiographic features of a maxillary mass that demonstrated SCC arising from the lining of an OKC. Although the initial clinical and radiographic presentation suggested an infection or malignant neoplasm, biopsies revealed an infiltrative well-differentiated SCC contiguous with and arising from the focus of a pre-existing OKC. The patient subsequently underwent a type II hemi-maxillectomy with neoadjuvant chemoradiation. This report discusses the clinical and radiographic features associated with intraosseous malignancies, especially those arising from an otherwise benign odontogenic lesion. While the majority of OKCs are benign, the current report illustrates the potential for carcinomatous transformation within the lining of an OKC.

Odontogenic Myxoma of the jaws is a rare benign tumor derived from embryonic mesenchymal elements of dental anlage. It appears to originate from the dental papilla, follicle or periodontal ligament. Odontogenic Myxoma of the maxilla is less frequent but behaves more aggressively than that of the mandible, because it spreads through the maxillary sinus. Radiographically, the tumors present as unilocular or multilocular radiolucent lesions with well-defined borders with fine, bony trabeculae. On gross examination, the tumor appears as a smooth, glistening, gelatinous, lobulated mass. On microscopic examination, these neoplasms exhibit loose arrangement of stellate-shaped cells. The intercellular substance is a mucinous and homogeneous matrix. We report a case of odontogenic myxoma of the maxilla observed in our clinic with good prognosis after partial maxillectomy.

Central odontogenic fibroma is an extremely rare benign tumor, accounting for less than 0.1% of all odontogenic tumors. The most recent literature review that only 69 cases have so far been reported. This tumor has a slow persistent growth that results in painless cortical expansion clinically, and well defined unilocular or multilocular radiolucent lesion. Root resorption of associated teeth is common, and lesions located between the teeth often cause root divergence. There is occurring tendency to female more than male, and occurring in the mandible and in the maxilla with equal frequency. The treatment is surgical excision with no tendency to undergo malignant transformation. We report a case of central odontogenic fibroma in the maxilla of a 27-year male with literatures review.
