  • Purpose: This review illustrates an importance of oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) generation in association with eye disease, especially of cataract, and discusses an important role of lipid peroxide as a mediator of oxidative stress-related ocular dysfunction. Methods: Oxidative stress, resulted from the cellular production of ROS and RNS, is known to cause various forms of cellular damages such as protein oxidation, DNA breaks, apoptosis, and lipid peroxidation. These damages can be developed to human diseases. Accumulating evidence strongly suggests that continuous or constant exposure of eye tissues to oxidative stress is a main cause of cataractogenesis. Therefore, we investigated the action of oxidative stress in ocular dysfunction. Results: The ocular lens is continuously attacked by ROS inevitable generated from the process of cellular metabolism and the chronic exposure to ultraviolet. Excessive generation of ROS, resulting in degradation, oxidation, crosslinking and aggregation of lens proteins, is regarded as an important factor in development of cataract. Conclusions: These oxidative stress and oxidant/antioxidant imbalance produces the excess ROS which can lead to eye dysfunction. Even though known results, it should be noted that there is limited information on the molecular mechanism which can be better defined with the interrelation of oxidative stress and optic abnormalities.

  • Cataracts occur commonly in older dogs, which can lead to partial or complete vision loss. In the present study, a 12-year-old male poodle presented for evaluation of ocular sinister (OS) cataract. This study was a clinical case report on the process of performing surgery using phacoemulsification (PHACO) and the problems that arise in patient diagnosed with OS cataract. In the oculus dexter (OD), the artificial eye was inserted because there was no electroretinography (ERG) response. In the OS, the ERG was 51.6 μV, so operation was performed because the visual pathway function remained. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the OS showed complete loss of vision as a hypermature cataract and that the lens was hardened. During the cataract surgery using PHACO, visco-elastic agents were used to maintain the shape of the eyeball, and the PHACO procedure took 3.13 minutes. The hardened lens and visco-elastic agents were removed from the eye through PHACO surgery, and the operation was completed by inserting an intraocular lens (IOL). As a result of managing IOP for 2 months after surgery, it remained stable at a maximum of 19 mmHg, and no postoperative ocular hypertension (POH) occurred. Currently, one year has passed since the operation, and the dog maintains its daily life with its left eye without any problems.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lens color of sunglasses on stereoacuity by experiment. Methods. We conducted a stereotaxic test using a RANDOM DOT with a polarizing lens at an examination distance of 40 cm in 100 men and women aged 20 to 60 years without any specific ocular disease. Then, seven kinds of PVC color film such as yellow, black, brown, red, purple, blue and green were put on the polarizing lens and the stereoscopic examination was carried out again. Results. When the lens color of the sunglasses is yellow, black, and brown, it affects less stereoscopic effect. However, red, purple, blue, and green have much influence on stereoscopic effect. Especially, the red and purple colors affected the stereoscopic vision. In blue and green, the effect of stereoscopic vision was different according to the people. Conclusions. Depending on the lens color of the sunglasses, stereoscopic vision is affected, which can cause problems in binocular vision. Therefore, when choosing sunglass lens color, many buyers need to pay attention.

  • Lymphoma is one of the most common malignant neoplasms of the dog. Little has been published on intraocular lymphoma in dogs. This report presents a 8-year-old neutered male mixed dog with a previous history on inflammatory debris on the anterior and posterior lens capsules, vitreal hemorrhage, generalized peri-pheral lymphadenopathy and a palpable mid-abodominal mass. History, clinical signs, radiography, cytology, histopathology and chemotherapeutic response confirmed multicentric lymphoma with secondary ocular infla-mmation. Intraocular lymphoma, the most common secondary neoplasm of the canine eye, may be the present-ing evidence of systemic disease. This report describes a dog that presented with ocular manifestations of multicentric lymphoma.

  • The physiology and morphology of cornea has effected on the ocular refractive status. Therefore the measurement of the anterior corneal surface by keratometer is used the treatment of the spectacles and contact lens by optician, optometrist, and ophthalmologist. Furthermore, currently the most corneal topographic mapping system have used the clinical optical shop, eye research center, and eye hospital. Because this method have a very fine data comparative to the previous instrument. The authors have measurement the cornea of the man college students by the corneal topographic mapping method. Especially this data will applied the clinical practice for the contact lens fitting. Especially in Korea, many man college students use the contact lens for the visual acuity and a beauty. Therefore the contact lens wear have increase per every year.

  • A 2-year-old miniature poodle dog was referred to Seoul Animal Clinic for assessment of traumatic ocular lesion by cat claw. Corneal perforation accompanied by hyphema following iridal laceration was observed in the left eye. Topical antibiotics, mydriatics and systemic antibiotics/steroids were applied to treat severe uveitis with miosis and fibrinous exudate. Although lenticular lesion was explored after mydriasis, it was obscured by severe corneal edema around corneal perforation. Despite aggressive treatments, the uveitis became more serious in the next day. To prevent septic implantation syndrome from anterior lens capsule disruption, phacoemulsification surgery was performed. The anterior lens capsule disruption was detected during continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis. The left eye remained the vision with mild posterior capsule opacification and intermittent conjunctival hyperemia during seven-month follow-up.

  • The eye irritant test of lens washing agent, $SOLOCARE^{TM}$ was conducted using Draize methods according to KFDA Guidelines 1999-61. In addition, to test the potential toxicity of test articles the ratio of inflammatory cells and non-inflammatory epitheloid cells were also observed using smear cytology methods against ocular discharge. At sacrifice, the histopathological changes on Cornea, Iris, Retina and Sclera were also observed in all animals. Slight (1~2 degrees) irritancy of cornea and conjunctiva were observed at 1, 2 and 3 days after dropping in non-washing group. The MIOI of these points are detected as 4.33, 3.33 and 2.00, respectively. In washing group, slight irritancy of cornea and conjunctiva were restricted to 1 and 2 days after dropping with MIOI as 3.00 and 1.33, respectively. Therefore, $SOLOCARE^{TM}$ was also considered as non-irritating materials because the MIOI is detected below 5.00 throughout the whole experimental periods in both washing and non-washing groups and the IAOI is also detected as 4.33 (1 day after dropping). No meaningful changes on smear cytology of ocular discharges are observed in this study compared to that of non-treated intact eyes. In addition, no abnormal histopathological changes on the cornea, iris, retina and sclera were also detected in $SOLOCARE^{TM}$ dropping group compared to that of non-treated intact eyes.
