Analysis of cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure of 20 to 24 years old population in Korea (한국인 20세부터 24세까지 각막 두께와 안압의 분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure Korean adult of 20 to 24 year old using the Pentacam and tonometer. Methods: The subjects of this study were 43 Korean adults with healthy eyes. Corneal thickness was measured with Pentacam device. The intra ocular pressure was measured with tonometer. Data was analyzed by means of the Pearson's correlation cofficient. P-values<0.001 were considered statistically significant. Results: Mean age of subjects was 20.41±0.86 years. The mean +/- intra ocular pressure of the right eye and left eye were 16.236±2.523mmHg and 16.971±1.992mmHg, respectively. The mean central corneal thickness of the right eye and left eye was 545.324±38.682㎛ and 547.442±33.778㎛, respectively. No significant difference in central corneal thickness was found between the right and left eyes. But, there was a statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and peripheral cornea thickness around 4 mm of central cornea(p<0.001, Pearson's correlation). However there was no statistically significant difference between central cornea thickness and intra ocular pressure. Conclusion: The results of this study could be used as a clinical reference data for diagnosis and treatment of cornea in Korean adult.

Expression Analysis of Visual Arrestin gene during Ocular Development of Olive Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of the commercial important flatfish species in Korea. The ocular signal transduction pathway is important in newly hatched flounders because it is closely involved in the initial feeding phase thus essential for survival during the juvenile period. However, the study of gene expression during ocular development is incomplete in olive flounder. Therefore we examined the expression analysis of specifically induced genes during the development of the visual system in newly hatched flounders. We searched ocular development-involved gene in the database of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from olive flounder eye and this gene similar to arrestin with a partial sequence homology. Microscopic observation of retinal formation corresponded with the time of expression of the arrestin gene in the developmental stage. These results suggest that arrestin plays a vital role in the visual signal transduction pathway of the retina during ocular development. The expression of arrestin was strong in the ocular system during the entirety of the development stages. Our findings regarding arrestin have important implications with respect to its biological role and evolution of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling in olive flounder. Further studies are required on the GPCR-mediated signaling pathway and to decipher the functional role of arrestin.

Ocular Complications after Injection of Intra-arterial Carboplatin in Gliomas - Report of Three Cases - (신경교종에서 뇌동맥내 Carboplatin주입후 발생한 안구 합병증 - 3례보고 -)

  • Carboplatin intra-arterial chemotherapy(IAC) has an advantage of increased uptake during the first passage of the drugs through tumor capillaries. Although not common, this type of therapy is known to cause neurological complications, myelosuppression, and ototoxicity. However, the incidence of ocular toxicity is reported to be rare. Eleven of our patients with glioma(Grade II Astrocytoma : 3, Grade III Astrocytoma : 1, Grade IV Astrocytoma : 5, Gliofibroma : 1, Oligodendroglioma : 1) underwent IAC regimen with carboplatin($300mg/m^2$) which were administrated after blood-brain barrier disruption. Of there, 3 patients had ocular complications after supra-ophthalmic IAC injection of carboplatin but fully recovered following steroid therapy. Although our results from IAC seem to be favorable for these patients, we suggest that its complications, such as ocular toxicity, need to be carefully considered prior to treatment.

A Case Report of a Thalamus, Midbrain, and Cerebellum Infarction Patient Suffering from Blepharoptosis and Ocular Motility Disorders Treated by Korean Medicine (시상, 중뇌, 소뇌경색으로 인한 안검하수, 안구운동장애를 호소하는 환자의 한방 치험 1례)

  • Objectives: This is a case report about the effect of Korean medicine on blepharoptosis and ocular motility disorders that occur with thalamus, midbrain, and cerebellum infarctions. Methods: The patient was treated using Korean medicine such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine (Boyanghwano-tang-gamibang). The change of blepharoptosis was evaluated by measurement of palpebral fissure width (PFW), marginal reflex distance-1 (MRD1), and marginal reflex distance-2 (MRD2). The change inocular motility disorders was evaluated by comparison using photographs of the extraocular movements of the patient. We used the Numeric Rating Scale-11 (NRS-11) of diplopia and dizziness to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Results: After treatment, blepharoptosis and ocular motility disorders were improved. The NRS-11 score of dizziness decreased from 10 to 7, and diplopia disappeared after Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions: According to this study, Korean medicine can be effective for treating blepharoptosis and ocular motility disorders in thalamus, midbrain, and cerebellum infarctions.

A family with dynamin 2-related centronuclear myopathy without ocular involvement

  • Centronuclear myopathy (CNM) is a rare congenital myopathy that is pathologically characterized by the centrally located nuclei in most of the muscle fibers. On clinical examination, dynamin 2 (DNM2)-related CNM typically shows distal dominant muscle atrophy, ptosis, ophthalmoplegia, and contracture. The reported cases of CNM in Caucasian studies show a high prevalence rate of early-onset ptosis and ophthalmoplegia and correlated with the severity of the disease. However, Asian reports show a low prevalence and late-onset ocular symptoms in DNM2-related CNM patients. p.R465W is one of the most commonly found mutations in Western countries, and all the cases showed ocular symptoms. The proband and his daughter had no ocular symptoms despite harboring the same p.R465W mutation. This family makes us speculate that ocular symptoms in DNM2-related CNM are influenced by ethnic background. In addition, this is the first familial case of DNM2-related CNM in Korea.

Retrospective Observational Study for Effectiveness of Inmok-tang on Dry Eye Syndrome (건성안 증후군 환자에서 인목탕의 유효성 평가를 위한 후향적 관찰연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze effectiveness of herbal medicine treatment on Dry Eye Syndrome. Methods : We analyze medical records of 114 patients who visited Indara oriental medical clinic for dry eye syndrome. Patients were treated with acupuncture and Inmok-tang, and the ocular surface disease index was evaluated before and after treatment. Results : Analysis of 114 medical records showed a significant decrease in the pre-treatment and post-treatment ocular surface disease index, and a statistically significant positive correlation between the duration of Inmok-tang administration and the change in the ocular surface disease index. Conclusions : Herbal medicine treatment with Inmok-tang reduces the Ocular Surface Disease Index, an indicator of subjective symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

  • Many automatic medical devices have been invented and developed mostly for the western medicine, not for the oriental medicine. Facial ocular inspection is one of the four diagnosis methods of oriental medicine, which makes a diagnosis of disease by observing the shape and color of patient's vital organs. In facial ocular inspection, the regions of five sensory organs and Myungdang are specially important. In this paper, we propose a novel method to extract the five sensory organ and Myungdang from a facial image for facial ocular inspection. Finally, we show the usefulness of the proposed method by experiments.

  • Some ocular complications were connected to the contamination by the contact lens related. Especially the most cause of ocular complications was a microorganism from several processing of infections. Therefore the patients stopped the contact lens wear immediately by the side effects of ocular pathology. We had analyzed the microorganism from the laboratory. It was identified as mixed growth of the Chryseamonas meningosepticum and Enterobacter sp.

  • Ocular lens failure can be verified by measuring the elastic wave velocity diffraction patterns of monochromatic wave applied with elastic wave were detected using optical heterodyne method. The elastic wave velocity was measured by analysing the diffraction patterns. According to measured results of the longitudinal elastic wave velocity of the middle index-refraction and high index-refraction lens are 6588.5575 m/s and 3973.53 m/s, respectively.
