  • In this paper, we propose a video enhancement method using generative adversarial networks to remove raindrops and restore the background information on the removed region in the coastal wave video imagery distorted by raindrops during rainfall. Two experimental models are implemented: Pix2Pix network widely used for image-to-image translation and Attentive GAN, which is currently performing well for raindrop removal on a single images. The models are trained with a public dataset of paired natural images with and without raindrops and the trained models are evaluated their performance of raindrop removal and background information recovery of rainwater distortion of coastal wave video imagery. In order to improve the performance, we have acquired paired video dataset with and without raindrops at the real coast and conducted transfer learning to the pre-trained models with those new dataset. The performance of fine-tuned models is improved by comparing the results from pre-trained models. The performance is evaluated using the peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index and the fine-tuned Pix2Pix network by transfer learning shows the best performance to reconstruct distorted coastal wave video imagery by raindrops.

  • In order to analyze incompressible two-phase flow, Level Set method was applied on pseudo-compressibility formulation. Level Set function is defined as a signed distance function from the phase interface, and gives the information of the each phase location and the geometric data to the flow. In this study, Level Set function transport equation was coupled with flow conservation equations, and owing to pseudo-compressibility technique we could solve the resultant vector equation iteratively. Two-phase flow analysis code was developed on general curvilinear coordinate, and numerical tests of bubble dynamics and surging wave problems demonstrate its capability successfully.

  • We recently developed new offshore observation system using USN buoy, widely used to measure the directional properties of ocean wave, seawater temperature, UV light, longitude and latitude of the buoy using GPS module. This paper also documents the development and implementation of a buoy network for acquisition of data of base station with buoys. The major phases of the project include specification of the network, physical construction of network nodes, software development for control of nodes, and testing of network performance. We described some of the practical issues involved in designing, building and deploying a buoy network for oceanographic monitoring. The paper explains some of the design decisions and their consequences, and some of the lessons learned from a first lesson network trial at sea.

  • The tracking system on the moving vehicle is made up of two parts. One is a stabilizer which is flatting the system against the moving vehicle, the other is a tracker which is tracking the target. This makes use of the geometric information of the tracking target and that utilizes the dynamic information of the moving vehicle equipping the tracking system. Especially the stabilizer is very important for an ocean vehicle affected by wave, wind, and current. In this paper, the stabilizer of sun tracking system for a ship is developed.

  • This study examines marine heat wave (MHW) in the Northeast Asia region from 2012 to 2021, utilizing geostationary satellite Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS)/Meteorological Imager sensor (MI) and GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A)/Advanced Meteorological Imager sensor (AMI) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data. Our analysis has identified an increasing trend in the frequency and intensity of MHW events, especially post-2018, with the year 2020 marked by significantly prolonged and intense events. The statistical validation using Optimal Interpolation (OI) SST data and satellite SST data through T-test assessment confirmed a significant rise in sea surface temperatures, suggesting that these changes are a direct consequence of climate change, rather than random variations. The findings revealed in this study serve the necessity for ongoing monitoring and more granular analysis to inform long-term responses to climate change. As the region is characterized by complex topography and diverse climatic conditions, the insights provided by this research are critical for understanding the localized impacts of global climate dynamics.

  • With the rapid progress of electronics and radio communication technology, human enjoys greater freedom in information communication. However, EMW(Electro-Magnetic Wave) environments have become more complicate and difficult to control. Thus, international organizations, such as the American National Standard Institution(ANSI), Federal Communications Commission(FCC), the Comite Internationale Special des Perturbations Radio Electrique(CISPR), etc, have provided standard for controlling the EM wave environments and for the countermeasure of the electromagnetic compatibility(EMC). In this paper, fabrication of the smart EMW absorber which has heat radiating function and high performance absorption abilities were suggested. Furthermore, we prospected future smart EMW absorbers. The designed smart EMW absorber is fabricated following process. Firstly, we applied high temperature heat treated to a mixture of Iron-oxide($Fe_2O_3$) and ceramics. Secondly, we applied low temperature heat treated to the mixture of heat treated material and a carbon material. Lastly, we made apertures on the absorber. The designed smart EM wave absorber has the absorption ability of more than 20 dB from 2 GHz to 2.45 GHz band, respectively. Thus, it is respected that these results can be applied as various EMC devices in electronic, communication, and controlling systems.

  • The electromagnetic (light) waves have a limitation to penetrate media, ie, water and sea-bottom layers, due to high energy attenuation, but acoustic (sound) waves play as the good messenger to gather the underwater target information. Therefore, the acoustic methods are applied to almost all of ocean equipments and technology in terms of in-water and sub-bottom surveys. Generally the sound character is controlled by its frequency. In case that the sound source is low frequency, the penetration is high and the resolution is low. On the other hand, its character is reversed at the high frequency. The common character at the both of light and sound is the energy damping according to the travel distance increase.

  • The authors carried out an experiment to investigate the echo fluctuations from ocean bottom due to ship's motion. The bottom echoes was continuously measured, by using a 50 kHz Echo sounder on board of the ship being at anchor under the sea condition of 15 knots in wind velocity and approximately 2 meters in wave height, to extract the information about the pulse stretching and the ship's motion from the first return and the second return. A data acquisition system was used to record digitally the envelope of the echoes, and the analysis was applied to the echo data collected from the continental shelf in the South China Sea. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The equivalent pulse width of the second return echoes from ocean bottom was 2.4 times longer than that of the first return echoes. 2. The echo peak values of the first return fluctuated markedly than that of the second return and was shown to be extremely sensitive to small change in ship's motion. 3. Energy target strength and peak target strength of the sandy-mud bottom were -13.4 dB and -14.6 dB, respectively.

  • In this study, a Cartesian-grid method based on finite volume approach is applied to simulate the ship motions in large amplitude waves. Fractional step method is applied for pressure-velocity coupling and TVD limiter is used to interpolate the cell face value for the discretization of convective term. Water, air, and solid phases are identified by using the concept of volume-fraction function for each phase. In order to capture the interface between air and water, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme is used with weighed line interface calculation (WLIC) method which considers multidimensional information. The volume fraction of solid body embedded in the Cartesian grid system is calculated using a level-set based algorithm, and the body boundary condition is imposed by a volume weighted formula. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional barge type model and Wigley hull in linear waves have been carried out to validate the newly developed code. To demonstrate the applicability for highly nonlinear wave-body interactions such as green water on the deck, numerical analysis on the large-amplitude motion of S175 containership is conducted and all computational results are compared with experimental data.
