When the typhoons are passing over the ocean, the ocean environment has both physical and biological impacts on the East, South sea and Yellow sea of Korea. As a result of typhoon path, vertical mixing and upwelling injured colder subsurface water, and leaded to phytoplankton blooming along the typhoons. The ocean environment before and after a typhoon played an important role in the biological effect of sea surface. Although the magnitude of sea surface temperature (SST) gets cooler because of typhoon path, other physical and biophysical responses are quite different such as chlorophyll, K490 and SST. The purpose of this study is to compare with the typhoon path that influenced the Korean Peninsula and ocean environment parameters which were observed by ocean color remotely-sensed data. The MODIS data were used to assess the parameters of ocean environments such as K490 and chlorophyll data from 2002 to 2005. Mean chlorophyll from MODIS data increased by about 1-4% in the East sea after the typhoon. Mean concentration of MODIS chlorophyll in the post-typhoon period increased along the typhoon passage. However, Jeju coastal area has different patterns from those of the East sea.
Crude extracts of thirty seaweeds collected in Korea were obtained using 50% ethanol, and total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities were compared. Two brown algae, Ecklonia cava (E. cava) and Sargassum siliquastrum (S. siliquastrum), showing high antioxidant activity based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity were further investigated for their inhibitory effects on tyrosinase activity. The E. cava extract had the highest total phenolic content among the seaweeds extracts. Total phenolic contents were strongly correlated with antioxidant activity in the thirty seaweed extracts ($R^2\;=\;0.9169$). The E. cava and S. siliquastrum extracts exhibited higher inhibition to tyrosinase activity than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

This study was conducted to determine whether the layout of wheelhouse and work environment of coastal improved stow net fishing boats affect the physical abnormalities of wheelhouse workers through a survey and to use it as basic data to improve the wheelhouse work environment. The analysis results are as follows. The result of factor analysis on the wheelhouse work environment was classified into three factors: suitability of work environment, suitability of work space arrangement, and layout of navigational and fishing equipment. The result of factor analysis on physical abnormalities was divided into two factors: physical pain and fatigue. The results of regression model analysis showing factors affecting physical pain showed that the t-value in the regression model was 3.625 (p < 0.05), indicating that the work environment suitability had an effect on the physical pain. Work environment suitability had a significantly positive effect on the physical pain. As work environment suitability increased by 1, the physical pain increased by 0.371 (p < 0.05). The results of regression model analysis showing the influencing factors on fatigue were found to have a t-value of 3.009 (p < 0.05) in the regression model, indicating that the work environment suitability had a significantly positive effect on the feeling of fatigue. It was found that fatigue increased by 0.324 (p < 0.05) as the work environment suitability increased by 1. In addition, the manageability of task suitability was found to be t = -2.521 (p > 0.05). As the manageability of task suitability increased, the skipper's fatigue level decreased. From these results, it is inferred that the wheelhouse of the current coastal improved stow net fishing boats causes physical pain and fatigue for the skippers. In order to reduce such physical pain and fatigue, and to improve safe fishing operation and job satisfaction, it is necessary to provide a wheelhouse to fishermen on coastal improved stow net fishing boats in consideration of the characteristics of the wheelhouse work of fishing boats and in consideration of users.
To understand the oceanographic characteristics of Hupo coastal waters as regards the East Korean Warm Current and the North Korean Cold Current, current direction and velocity were investigated by deploying a current meter in Hupo coastal waters during the summer and fall of 2007. Wind data were obtained from the homepage of the Korea Meteorological Administration. Water temperature was measured using a temperature meter attached to the current meter and a mini log. During summer, a south wind prevailed, while during the fall the wind blew from the north. Cold surface waters occurred on a large scale in summer, while in the fall, warm bottom water occurred frequently. After mid-November, when the surface water was cooler than $15^{\circ}C$, there was no difference in water temperature between the surface and bottom layers.
Extraction of ocean surface current velocity offers important physical oceanographic parameters especially on understanding ocean environment. Although Remote Sensing techniques were highly developed, the investigation of ocean surface current using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is not an easy task. This paper presents the results of ocean surface current observation using Doppler Centroid of ERS-1 SAR data obtained off the coast of Korea peninsula. We employed the concept, in which Doppler frequency shift and the ocean surface current are closely related, to evaluate ocean surface current. Moving targets cause Doppler frequency shift of the back scattered radar waves of SAR, thus the line-of-sight velocity component of the scatters can be evaluated. The Doppler frequency shift can be measured by estimating the difference between Doppler Centroid of raw SAR data and reference Doppler Centroid. Theoretically, the Doppler Centroid is zero; however, squinted antenna which is affected by several physical factors causes Doppler Centroid to be nonzero. The reference Doppler Centroid can be obtained from measurements of sensor trajectory, attitude and Earth model. The estimated Doppler Centroid was compensated by considering the accurate attitude estimation of ERS-1 SAR. We could verify the correspondence between the estimated ocean surface current and observed in-situ data in the error bound.
Marine organisms in Antarctica live in an environment which exhibits variability in physical processes over a wide range of temporal scales, from seconds to millennia. This time scale tends to be correlated with the spatial scale over which a given process operates, though this relationship is influenced by biology. The way organisms respond to variability in the physical environment depends on the time-scale of that variability in relation to life-span. Short-term variations are perceived largely as noise and probably have little direct impact on ecology. Of much greater importance to organisms in Antarctica are seasonal and decadal variations. Although seasonality has long been recognised as a key feature of polar environments, the realization that decadal scale variability is important is relatively recent. Long-term change has always been a feature of polar environments and may be a key factor in the evolution of the communities we see today.
In order to grasp physical characteristics of Ganajin Bay receiving the effluents from land, a comprehensive field surve)'has been conducted at the north of Wando and Gogeumdo in 2002. Water temperature was most high in September while most low in December. A high temperature in September was inferred to have caused by the dispersion of warm fresh water with favor of a dominant wind in autumn. However, salinity and sigma-t in situ was most low in September while most high in December. A low salinity (or density) in September turned out to reflect the influence of a dense rainfall in summer. Water temperature, salinity and density at the surface layer were lower than those at the bottom layer, except for December. Their horizontal profiles suggested the influence of effluents such as Tamjin River. Particularly, time series of water temperature acquired near the sluice and at the north channel of Wando tended to rise at the flood flow but fall at the ebb flow in accordance with the tide. The form ratio of the tide in the study area was $0.31\~0.32$ and the amplitude of the tide appeared to increase towards the west. Northeastward or southwestward flows prevailed in this area but the residual flows were all northeastward with a magnitude of $3\~4cm/s$.
Ambient noise as a background noise in the ocean has been well known for its the various and irregular signal characteristics. Generally, these signals we treated as noise and they are analyzed through stochastical level if they don't include definite sinusoidal signals. This study is to see how ocean ambient noise can be analyzed by the chaotic analysis technique. The chaotic analysis is carried out with underwater ambient noise obtained in areas near the Korean Peninsula. The calculated physical parameters of time series signal are as follows: histogram, self-correlation coefficient, delay time, frequency spectrum, sonogram, return map, embedding dimension, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, etc. We investigate the chaotic pattern of noises from these parameters. From the embedding dimensions of underwater noises, the assesment of underwater noise by chaotic analysis shows similar results if they don't include a definite sinusoidal signal. However, the values of Lyapunov exponent (divergence exponent) are smaller than that of random noise signal. As a result we confirm the possibility of classification of underwater noise using Lyapunov analysis.

In order to understand the distribution of changes of geochemical characteristics in surface sediments according to various environmental changes around the artificial Lake Shihwa, surface sediments were sampled at $13{\sim}15$ sites form 1997 to 1999 and analyzed by C/S analyzer, ICP/MS and AAS. The average $S/C_{org}$ ratio was 0.35 in the surface sediments, which is similar to 0.36, the characteristic ratio of marine sediments. Heavy metal contents and enrichment factors in the surface sediments tended to be decreasing from the head to the mouth of the Lake Shihwa. With the deposition of fine-grained sediments in the central part of lake, anoxic water column induced the sulfides compounds with Cu, Cd and Zn. Metals such as Al, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd except for Mn and Pb showed relatively high correlation coefficients among them. The contents of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd in the surface sediments of the lake were two to five times higher than those in the lake before dike construction and also in outer part of the dike. These are mainly due to the Input of untreated industrial and municipal waste-waters into the lake, and the accumulation of heavy metals by limitation of physical mixing. Although metal contents of the surface sediments at the sites near the water-gate due to outer seawater inflow tended to be lower than those during the desalination, heavy metals were deposited in areas around the new industrial complex in the evidence of spatial distribution of heavy metals in the sediments. This is mainly due to the input of untreated waste-waters from tributaries.

For the water quality improvement in the ocean outfall area of sewage treatment plant, this study tried to control the water quality of outfall area using the biofilter method through seaweeds, a way of ecological engineering treatment that is applicable in the marine ecosystem. Therefore, this research made an attempt the main factors necessary for creating seaweed bed to improve water quality in the outfall area of sewage treatment plant, and the results are as follows. In the case of making the seaweed bed in the ocean outfall area of sewage treatment plant, Habitat Suitability Index of Ecklonia cava per all survey points, considered physical and physico-chemical factors in 5~10 meters below sea level, was 50~93% (average 80%), so this seaweed, Ecklonia cava, was suitable for making the seaweed bed.
