  • The increase of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emission is known as one of the major causes of global warming, and it has a strong influence on the global environment. Therefore many researchers and politicians have tried to regulate the $CO_2$ emission. In regards to the matter, the IMPACT (Inclusive Marine Pressure Assesment and Classification Technology) committee under the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) has developed an inclusive environmental impact assessment index, so-called "Triple I(III)", in order to assess the environmental impact including economic factors due to the artificial development of marine. In this study, III was applied to compare between the environmental impact of $CO_2$ emitted by container vessels during their life-cycle period and economic benefit due to their operating. Furthermore, III was also applied to assess the comprehensive environmental impact for the cases with various capacities of container vessels and different sailing route. From the results, the case for shortening of the sailing route is more effective to get the advantageous assessment results of III than the case for varying the size of vessels.

  • The investigation of the space environment requires the use of experimental and theoretical tools and resources in order to perform the research task. Understanding of these research tools is imperative for proper interpretation of the results. In this paper, we discuss on research tools that are widely used in the field of aeronomy; Fabry-Perot interferometer and Michelson interferometer. These instruments have been used extensively as passive optical devices, spectrally monitoring the natural atmospheric emissions (airglow). This function has made both instruments valuable tools in upper atmospheric studies since they provide the ability to determine the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of the upper atmosphere by monitoring naturally-occuring emission.

  • Up to now, most of studies on mechanical properties in friction welded components are about tensile and bending strength. However the fatigue studies on the friction-welded components subjected to repeated stress are not available. The purposes of this study are the development of fundamental design and the development of in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission for the bar-to-bar dissimilar friction welding of hydraulic valve spool steels.

  • This study was conducted on the properties of exhaust emissions of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils using a direct injection diesel engine at different loads, and on the conditions of carbon deposits of diesel oil and 40% blend oil in the combustion chamber after 20 hours operation at $\frac{1]{2}$ load. The properties of exhaust emissions by fish oil blended with diesel oils showed no significant difference with diesel oil. However, soot emissions decreased, increasing the ratio of fish oil. Carbon deposits by fish oil blended with diesel oils were high level compared with diesel oil, which might be overcome by preheating of fuel oil and operating conditions.

  • The microwave instruments are used many areas of the space remote sensing and space science applications. The imaging radar of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is well known microwave radar sensor for earth surface and ocean research. Unlike radar, microwave radiometer is passive instrument and it measures the emission energy of target, i.e. brightness temperature BT, from earth surface and atmosphere. From measured BT, the geophysical data like cloud liquid water, water vapor, sea surface temperature, surface permittivity can be retrieved. In this paper, the radiometer characteristics, system configuration and principle of BT measurement are described. Also the radiometer instruments TRMM, GPM, SMOS for earth climate, and ocean salinity research are introduce. As first korean microwave payload on STSAT-2, the DREAM (Dual-channels Radiometer for Earth and Atmosphere Monitoring) is described the mission, system configuration and operation plan for life time of two years. The main issues of DREAM unlike other spaceborne radiometers, will be addressed. The calibration is the one of main issues of DREAM mission and how it contribute on the space borne radiometer. In conclusion, the radiometer instrument to space science application will be considered.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.

  • Currently, many studies on green ships are under way. Fuel cell (FC) ships are of interest as future low-emission, fuel-efficient vessels. In this paper, a hybrid power management system for an FC ship was designed. The system consists of an FC, a battery, a unidirectional DC/DC converter, a bidirectional DC/DC converter, a filter, an inverter, and a propulsion component. To design the system, we analyze electric sources and converters, and create PLECS models of hybrid power management system. Then, we check the cold start sequence and perform a simulation to understand the characteristics of the hybrid power management system in an FC ship.

  • A standard method for the evalution of the fracture toughness of the high polymer materials has not been fully developed in comparison with that for metallic materials, and has not yet established. In this paper, fracture toughness tests using polycarbonate specimens were carried out. The fracture thughness tests using polycabonate specimens were carried out. The fracture toughness of commercial polycarbonate were dependent on the specimen thickness. The specimen thickness is necessary above 8mm to obtain the valid $K_{IC}$. A cumulative counts were slightly dependent on specimen thickness.

  • The characteristics of the probability distribution for mechanical properties, e.g. tensile strength, reduction of area, and elongation, for STS304 stainless steel in elevated temperature are investigated. Tensile test is performed by constant crosshead speed controls with 1mm/min. The probability distribution function of measured mechanical properties seems to follow $\alpha$ 3-parameter Weibull, and shows a slight dependence on the temperature. When the temperature is raised, the shape parameter a is increased, but both the scale parameter $\beta$ and location parameter v are decreased.
