  • Since 2003, policies and practices related to the reduction of CO2 gas emission from ships has been discussing by the International Maritime Organization. The representative emission index and indicator are the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) for the new ships and EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) during the voyage. For the CO2 emission monitoring system, the SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) is also on the table. This global preparations to reduce theCO2 emission is not except for the surface transportation. This research report elucidates the recent stream on the IMO CO2 emission from ship and detail explanation on the EEDI and EEOI.

  • A field experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish school. The effects of. the acoustic emission on the luring of fish school were checked actually at a set net fishing site in Namhae using a commercial acoustic equipment, Dairyo-8. An emitting system of sound was designed by the authors, and the ambient noise, the sound pressure level and the reaction of fish school were measured in the set net. 1. The predominent frequency band of ambient noise was 150Hz-400Hz,.and the sound emitted was 400Hz-100Hz. The sound pressure level of ambient noise in set net was higher at the landing part, and lower at the playgrond, the gate of court and "the enterance of inclined "passage. The ambient noise was increased with the time elapse-d at the stage of hauling net, but :it was decreased suddenly at the final stage due probably to the decrease of the swimming speed of the fish school. 2. The results of the observation and the recording paper of echo sounder indicate that the effect of emitting sound in the bag net of set net was remarkable for the luring of fish school in the early stage, but decreased after 30 minutes. The reaction of fish school is more sensitiv2 to the sound pressure level than the time intervals between the emission and the pause. For the purpos~ of practical use, it is nesessary to confirm what kind of sound pressure level is the best for the luring of fish school. 3. In response to the acoustic equipment(Dairyo-8), fish school started to swarm 20 minutes after the sound emission and scattered when the sound paused. As the emitting pattern of the acoustic equiment, the three seconds of emission after one second of pause was more effective than the continuous emission at the set net fishing ground. Catch of the fish(s during th~ sound ernissio:l at the gate of court was three to five times more than that of no emission.

  • Monitoring systems of informations for ship performance have become important gradually for economical management of existing ship. Monitoring of NOx emission from marine diesel engines is one of them. The measurement of NOx emission, however has been many difficulties due to technical and costly problems. A monitoring by prediction method of NOx on-board ship according to sailing condition of ship could be an useful method. In this paper, it is discussed about modified method of one-zone model which has been utilized usually for analyzing the combustion process. The modified method is able to calculate the temperature of burned region from the result by one-zone model. Influences which excess air ratio during combustion process affected for the gas temperature and NOx emission were investigated. From the results variation of excess air ratio during combustion process could be estimated inversely through the comparison with measurement of NOx emission.

  • On this study, we researched the in-process monitoring during fiber laser welding as well as on the first paper. On the previous/formal study, we analyzed the change of emission signal on thin plate welding. On this study, however, we analyzed RMS and FFT with emission signals in laser welding on lap joint and butt joint of 8mm-thick 316L stainless steel. As the result, the movement of specific frequency peak was observed according to welding speed changes. Furthermore, frequency peak as a result of FFT on the thick plate welding are much clearer than on the thin plate welding. Therefore, it is expected that the welding parameter changes can be predicted in case of applying FFT to in-process monitoring.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding range, plastic deformation range and crack progress could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. It is expected to be basic data that can protect a risk according to local wall thinning of pipes, as a real time test of AE.

  • The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue due to Cancun Agreements Mexico in 1992 and the Kyoto protocol in 2005. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 5.2% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries has not been executed much. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is needed as the first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major coastal fisheries such as coastal gillnet fishery, coastal dual purpose fishery, coastal pots fishery and coastal small scale stow net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emission from the fisheries using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are also calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.

  • A Held experiment was carried out to confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish school of rudder fish in a set net at the coast of Cheju Island. The effects of the acoustic emission on the luring of fish school were observed at a cage around a set net fishing ground using a manufactured underwater speaker. Underwater sounds that were emitted for the luring of fish school were the pure sounds of which frequency were 300Hz and 400Hz, engine noise and swimming sound. The results of the observation are as follows : 1. The input and output wave forms of a manufactured underwater speaker in water tank were similar to those in measurement frequencies. The result of the observation indicated that it could be used for the purpose of the sound emission in measurement frequencies. 2. The effect of the emitted pure sound of 300Hz, 400Hz was remarkable for the luring of fish school in 2 minutes after the sound emission. The reaction of fish school was more sensitive to the pure sound of 400Hz than 300Hz. 3. The effect of the emitted engine noise was more remarkable than that of the pure sound for 3 minute continuously. On the feeding sound, fish formed a shoal and swimmed, but didn't gather around the underwater speaker. 4. The feeding and swimming sound spectra on rudder Hsh showed similar sound pressure distribution each other, they appeared low sound pressure in frequencies of 200-600Hz.

  • In this study, carbon steel (A53) is used as the material for the pipes in a marine plant and ship industry. Welds are necessary to join the carbon steel, and the effect of this welding on the properties of the carbon steel has been studied by many researchers. In this study, the dynamic behavior of welded carbon steel was studied using an acoustic emission (AE) technique, which is a nondestructive test. There are numerous AE parameters that can be used to analyze the damage behavior of carbon steel by external loading. The AE parameters of energy, cumulative count, amplitude, and AE event were used, and each parameter was differentiated according to the degree of damage to the carbon steel. The energy showed a high level at the elastic range of the load curve, while the amplitude had the highest value at the hardening region. The cumulative count showed a growth tendency similar to the loading curve. In addition, an ultrasonic technique and hardness test were applied to evaluate the mechanical properties according to the base zone, HAZ region, and weld zone of the weld specimen. The velocity and attenuation ratio showed little change between zones, and an evaluation of the ultrasonic waves on each zone of the specimen was found to be a useful method to clarify the mechanical properties of the carbon steel.

  • The interest in greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted from all industries is emerging as a very important issue worldwide. This is affecting not only the global warming, but also the environmentally friendly competitiveness of the industry. The fisheries sector is increasingly interested in greenhouse gas emissions also due to the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015. Korean industry and government are also making a number of effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions so far, but the effort to reduce GHG in the fishery sector is insufficient compared to other fields. Especially, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries did not carry out extensively. The studies on GHG emissions from Korean fishery are most likely dealt with the GHG emissions by fishery classification so far. However, the forthcoming research related to GHG emissions from fisheries is needed to evaluate the GHG emission level by species to prepare the adoption of Environmental labels and declarations (ISO 14020). The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted to produce the species (swimming crab and snow crab) from various fisheries. Here, we calculated the GHG emission to produce the species from the fisheries using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries for the species are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for producing the unit weight species and annual production are calculated by fishery classification. The results will be helpful to establish the carbon footprint of seafood in Korea.

  • To evaluate the degree of contamination caused by oil spill accident in the sea, the in-situ sensors which are based on the scientific method are needed in the real site. The sensors which are based on the fluorescence detection theory can provide the useful data, such as the concentration of oil. However these kinds of sensors commonly are composed of the ultraviolet (UV) light source such as UV mercury lamp, the multiple excitation/emission filters and the optical sensor which is mainly photomultiplier tube (PMT) type. Therefore, the size of the total sensing platform is large not suitable to be handled in the oil spill field and also the total price of it is extremely expensive. To overcome these drawbacks, we designed the fluorimeter for the oil spill detection which has compact size and cost effectiveness. Before the detail design process, we conducted the experiments to measure the excitation and emission spectrum of oils using five different kinds of crude oils and three different kinds of processed oils. And the fluorescence spectrometer were used to analyze the excitation and emission spectrum of oil samples. We have compared the spectrum results and drawn the each common spectrum regions of excitation and emission. In the experiments, we can see that the average gap between maximum excitation and emission peak wavelengths is near 50 nm for the every case. In the experiment which were fixed by the excitation wavelength of 365 nm and 405 nm, we can find out that the intensity of emission was weaker than that of 280 nm and 325 nm. So, if the light sources having the wavelength of 365 nm or 405 nm are used in the design process of fluorimeter, the optical sensor needs to have the sensitivity which can cover the weak light intensity. Through the results which were derived by the experiment, we can define the important factors which can be useful to select the effective wavelengths of light source, photo detector and filters.
