  • This paper constructed the 3D real-time numerical model for which predicts the water quality and movement characteristics of the inner bay, which consider the characteristics of the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries which generated by the river discharge from the Hyeong-san river and oceanic water of the Eastern sea. The constructed numerical model reappeared successfully the seawater circulation current of Yeong-il Bay, which used the input conditions of the real-time tidal current, river discharge and weather conditions at March of 2001 year. Also to observe the wind-driven current and density current in estuaries effected to the seawater circulation pattern of the inner bay, we investigated the analyzation for the each impact factors and the relationship with the water quality of Yeong-il bay

  • This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of partial discharge (PD) under high voltage direct current (HVDC) in SF6 gas. Electrode systems such as a protrusion on conductor (POC), a protrusion on enclosure (POE), a crack on epoxy plate and a free particle (FP) were fabricated to simulate the insulation defects. The analysis system was designed with a Time-Frequency (T-F) map algorithm programed based on LabVIEW. This can arrange the acquired PD pulses into frequency and time domain. A HVDC power source is composed of a transformer (220 V/50 kV), a diode (100 kV) and a capacitor (50 kV, 0.5 ${\mu}F$). The gap between the electrodes is 3 mm, and the $SF_6$ gas was set at 5 bar. PD pulses were detected by a 50 ${\Omega}$ non-inductive resistor. In the analysis, PD pulses were distributed below 0.5 MHz and 20 ns ~ 35 ns for the POC, 0.7 MHz ~ 1.7 MHz, below 0.6 MHz and 10 ns ~ 40 ns and 60 ns ~125 ns for the POE, below 0.1 MHz and 135 ns ~ 215 ns for the crack, and below 1.6 MHz and 250 ns for the FP.

  • A common feature in the three-dimensional numerical model experiments of coastal discharge with simplified model and idealized external forcings is investigated. The velocity fields due to the buoyancy and flaw flux, are spreaded radiately and the surface velocites are much greater than the homegeneous discharges. The coastal dischargd due to the Coriolis force and flaw flux are shaped a anticyclical gyre (clockwise) and determined the scale of the gyre in the coastal zone, respectively. The bottom topography restricts a outward extention of the coastal fronts and it accelerates a southward flow.

  • Whether Dokdo can sustain human habitation or economic life of their own plays an important role to the legal status of the island in the international maritime law. This study reports the hydrological survey results regarding the water resource of the island occurred at Moolgol in Seodo. The amount of underground discharge at Moolgol was estimated at least 1.1 m3/d, conforming the results of previous studies. Based on the oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios of water, the discharge appeared to originate from precipitation, and about 36% of the daily precipitation moves fast to the Moolgol through the joints developed in the volcanic bedrocks. Quality of the discharged water shows relatively higher concentrations in Cl and NO3 to be used for drinking and domestic purposes, probably affected by the sea spray and waves from surrounding sea and the birds' excretion such as black-tailed gulls.

  • The present study analyzed the variation factors in inducing a salinity change using the existing observation network in the section between the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage and Changnyeong-Haman Weir, and also examined the seasonal changes in precipitation, salinity, and discharge. Furthermore, this study analyzed the causes of a salinity increase by collecting observational data during a period when abnormal salinity occurred, and further investigated the salinity transfer time in a section of approximately 5.3 km from the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage to Nakdong River Bridge to understand the behavioral characteristics of the salinity moving upstream. The study results would make it possible to control the increase in salinity and block salt water from moving upstream by understanding the salinity variation characteristics according to the discharge amount. This will provide stability in collecting water from various residential, agricultural, and industrial sources through water intake facilities scattered near the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage.

  • The Youngsan River estuary was physically changed by the construction of a sea embankment at near the mouth of estuary. Weirs were also constructed recently in the freshwater zone and it was reported that algal blooms occur more frequently. The freshwater introduced into saltwater zone from sluice gates of the embankment affects water quality but it has not been addressed that how the freshwater inputs influence the health of marine ecosystem. In this study, we used the data of water properties and phytoplankton communities collected at three stations for 4 days including before the freshwater discharge, during the discharge and after 1 and 2 days of discharge events. WQI(water quality index), TRIX (trophic status index) and P-IBI(phytoplankton index of biotic integrity) were used to evaluate the ecosystem health and long-term data were also utilized to determine the criteria for P-IBI. The results showed that grades of the ecosystem health assessed by the indices were low at the station near the gates and increased as downstream. However, the temporal pattern of grades was different depending on methods. Grades of WQI and TRIX decreased during the discharge and restored after the discharge whereas the grades of P-IBI decreased slightly even after the discharge. This suggests that P-IBI is more applicable to estuarine systems where experience extreme change of water properties than WQI and TRIX since P-IBI includes phytoplankton that can respond quickly to the change.
