Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a secondorder finite difference method for the analysis of turbulent flows around single and tandem hydrofoils advancing under the free surface. The location of the free surface, not known a priori, is computed from the kinematic free surface condition and the computational grid is conformed at each iteration to the free surface deformation. The eddy viscosity model of Baldwin-Lomax is employed for the turbulence closure. The method is validated through the comparision of the numerical results with the experimental data for a single hydrofoil of a Joukowski foil section. A computational study is also carried out to investigate the effect of the submergence depth and the Froude number on the lift and the drag of the hydrofoil. For tandem hydrofoils, computations are performed for several separation distances between the forward and aft foils to see the interference effect. The result shows clearly how the lift and drag change with the separation distance.

Presently, one or several tugboats guide a ship in the port or canal, during the ship's engines and steering mechanism kept idle. This method has insufficient ability keeping the ship on course, danger of collision with waterside structures, tugging preparation time consuming, as well as the need expending substantial resources to acquire and maintain tugboats and associated facilities. Therefore, a new technology and system for ship's guiding to be needed and introduced instead of traditional guiding and tugging system.
Using 3D computational fluid dynamics techniques in recent years have shed significant light on the Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) encountered by deep-water marine risers. The fatigue damage accumulated due to these vibrations has posed a great concern to the offshore industry. This paper aims to present an algorithm to predict the crossflow and inline fatigue damage for very long (L/D > $10^3$) marine risers using a Finite-Analytical Navier-Stokes (FANS) technique coupled with a tensioned beam motion solver and rainflow counting fatigue module. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method has been used to simulate the turbulence in the flow. An overset grid system is employed to mesh the riser geometry and the wake field around the riser. Risers from NDP (2003) and Miami (2006) experiments are used for simulation with uniform, linearly sheared and non-uniform (non-linearly sheared) current profiles. The simulation results including inline and crossflow motion, modal decomposition, spectral densities and fatigue damage rate are compared to the experimental data and useful conclusions are drawn.

An approach using the nonlinear wave model in predicting wave-induced currents is presented. The model results were compared with those of the conventional model using phase-averaged radiation stress, and in addition with experimental data captured by a PIV system. As a result of comparison of wave-induced currents generated behind the surface-piercing breakwater and submerged breakwater, eddy patterns appeared to be similar each other but in general numerical solutions of both models were underestimated.

We calculated the residual current forced by buoyancy, wind stress, and tidal stress in the Chinhae Bay using a three-dimensional diagnostic model. The calculated current was also compared with the observation. The flow directs outward from the central area of the Bay in the upper layer, and also forms eddy-shape stucture in the upper and middle layers. The flow of bottom layer shows an opposite pattern compared to those of top and middle layers. The maximum speed was 6.05 em/see (September) and 3.49 cm/sec (November) in the upper layer, and 4.39 cm/sec on both month in the middle layer. The Kinetic energy of November (8.39xlO' W) was larger than that of September (1.24xlO 'W), mainly resulting from larger buoyancy effect in September. In spite of the roughness of the grid size(1 km) and wind date, the calculated flow shows eorrelation(r=0.71) with the observation. We expect that the correlation be increased by increased by adopting the fine grid and the variable coefficients of diffusion and viscosity.

This paper presents a new concept to reduce turbulent frictional drag by injecting micro-bubble into near the buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer on flat plate. The concentrations of micro bubble distribution in the boundary was calculater by eddy viscosity equations in the governing equations. When near region of the buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer is filled with micro-bulle of air and viscous of the region is kept low, the velocity profile in the near region should be changed substantially. Then the Reynolds stress in the region becomes less, which guide to lower velocity gradient there. It results in reduction of velocity gradient at the viscous sublayer, which gives the reduction of shear stress at the wall.

The suspended sediment mechanism was systematically investigated by analyzing existing data together with new data obtained under several wave folds. A simple empirical formula has been developed to predict the time-averaged suspended sediment concentration above movable bed by the effect of wave and current interaction. The present study shows linear dependency of the diffusion coefficient of suspended sediment on the eddy viscosity coefficient obtained by considering the ripple geometry. Furthermore, it is proved that reference sediment concentration is reduced by the effect of ripple asymmetry.
As the first step to investigate the nonlinear interactions between turbulence and marine structures inside a viscous NWT, a LES technique was applied to solve the turbulent channel flow for =150. The employed turbulence models included 4 types: the Smagorinsky model, the Dynamic SGS model, the Structure Function model, and the Generalized Normal Stress model. The simulated data in time-series for the LESs were averaged in both time and space, and statistical analyses were performed. The results of the LESs were compared with those of a DNS, developed in the present study and two spectral methods by Yoon et al.(2003) and Kim et a1.(1987). Based on this research, the accuracy of LESs has been found to be still related to the number of grids for fine grid size).

Tsushima Warm Current(WD entering into the East Sea through the Korean Strait flows northeastward and during this travel it shows complicated movement like meandering and eddy. It is considered that these variations of TWC are important causes making water masses unstable and also have influence on biological and chemical properties of water masses. Lee and Cho(2000) suggested that meandering of TWC in adjacent waters of Noto peninsula has much influence on fluctuation of current structure. (omitted)

This is the continuation of a numerical study on vortex shedding from a blunt trailing-edge of a hydrofoil. In our previous work (Lee et al., 2015), numerical schemes for efficient computations were successfully implemented; i.e. multiple domains, the approximation of domain boundary conditions using cubic spline functions, and particle-based domain decomposition for better load balancing. In this study, numerical results through a hybrid particle-mesh method which adopts the Vortex-In-Cell (VIC) method and the Brinkman penalization model are further rigorously validated through comparison to experimental data at the Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^6$. The effects of changes in numerical parameters are also explored herein. We find that the present numerical method enables us to reasonably simulate vortex shedding phenomenon, as well as turbulent wakes of a hydrofoil.
