Shallow sub-bottom reflection recorders are obtained using dual frequency (15/100 KHz). The main goal of this study is to enhance the resolving power and penetration for the sub-bottom reflection of the sub-marine seismic exploration. The Fresnel zones of spherical waves for the near-field are of great importance to reach the high resoluton. In case a target to detects than the Fresnel radius, a diffraction hyperbola on the recorder is observed. A larger attenuation of sand makes less penetration than the smaller attenuation of silt and clay. It is found that the selective frequency as well as the seismic energy generation is the most important factors for sub-marine exploration. This technique of using dual frequency sub-marine exploration may be applied to detect the sub-bottom sludge soil, ocean contamination and marine archaeological relics.
The thermal contamination of the Younggwang coastal marine ecosystem has been investigated using space borne thermal infrared data acquired over the period 1985-2003 by the Landsat and NOAA satellites. The analysis of AVHRR data brought out the general pattern and extension of thermal plume while TM data yielded more accurate information about the plume shape, dimension, dispersion direction etc. The examination of sea surface temperature (SST) computed from these images clearly indicates that the thermal plume extends 70 to100km southward during summer and 50 to70km northwestward during winter monsoons. The maximum plume temperature was 29$^{\circ}C$ in summer and 12$^{\circ}C$ in winter. The comparative analysis shows that the temperature retrieved from TM is slightly higher (1.8$^{\circ}C$, 3$^{\circ}C$ and 2.2$^{\circ}C$ for the images of 98/11/10, 99/05/05 and 99/05/21 respectively) than those derived from AVHRR data. The correlation coefficient between the TM-derived SST and AVHRR-derived SST was 0.72.
Concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn were determined in four arctic brown algae (Laminaria saccharina, L. digitata, Alaria esculenta, Desmarestia aculeata) in an attempt to examine for their metal accumulation capacity and also to assess their contamination levels. Macroalgae were collected from shallow subtidal waters (<20m) of Kongsfjorden (Kings Bay) on Spitsbergen during the period of the late July to early August 2003. Metal concentrations highly varied between sampling sites, species and tissue parts. Input of melt-water laden with terrigenous sediment particles seemed to have a large influence on baseline accumulations of some metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Pb etc.) in the macroalgae, causing a significant spatial variation. There were also significant concentration differences between the young and old tissue parts in L. saccharina, L. digitata and A. esculenta. While Al, Fe, Mn, Pb were higher in the perennial parts (stipes and holdfast below meristematic region), Cd and As concentrations were significantly higher in the young blades above the meristematic region. Zn and Cr, on the other hand, showed little differences between the tissue parts. The highest metal concentrations were found in D. aculeata, which seems to be due to its filamentous fine branches leading to high surface/volume ratios. The lowest concentrations were found in the two Laminaria spp., the blades of which are thicker than D. aculeata and A. esculenta. No distinct signs of contamination were detected in the brown algal species analyzed. Added to this, the results of the present studies suggest the potential utility of L. saccharina, L. digitata and A. esculenta as biomonitors for metal pollution monitoring in this area.
For the determination of coastal environmental contamination level of benomyl, benzimidazole pesticide, the residue of benomyl in various environmental samples on the Cheju island was monitored in May, August and October 1996, respectively. The residue of benomyl was determined as carbendazim because benomyl was converted to carbendazim (methyl 2- benzimidazolecarbamate) in the environment. The qualified limit detection of benomyl was $0.2{\mu}g/L$ in ocean water and $0.4{\mu}g/kg$ in the solid such as sediment and sea organism by HPLC with UV detector. Benomyl was not detected in any water and sediment. Moreover benomyl was neither detected in seaweed cava(Ecklonia Cava), agar(Gelidium amansii), turban sell(Batillus cornutus) and sea urchin(Anthocidaris Crassispina). Above date suggest that the benomyl used in the Cheju island is not the major source of coastal contamination.

Recently, many types of constructional steels have been often exposed to under severe corrosive environments due to acid rain with increasing environmental contamination. In order to inhibit their corrosion in severe corrosive environments, a painting method has been widely applied to numerous constructional steels of land as well as marine. Therefore, development of paint having a good quality of corrosion resistance is considered to be very important. In this study, four types of anti-corrosive paints (AP: Phenol epoxy, AC: Ceramic epoxy, AT: Coal tar epoxy, AH: High solid epoxy) were coated to the specimens, and then, were immerged in various salt solutions (0.1, 0.3, 3, 6, 9 and 15% NaCl solutions) for 11 days. And, the corrosion resistance of these samples by effect of osmotic pressure with salt concentration was investigated with electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, impedance and corrosion current density. The corrosion current densities of all samples (AC, AT and AH) submerged in 3% NaCl solution exhibited the smallest values compared to other salt solutions. However, in the case of lower values of salt solutions than 3% NaCl solution, the corrosion current density increased again because it makes easier for water, dissolved oxygen and chloride ion etc. to invade toward inner side of coating film due to increasing of the osmotic pressure than 3% NaCl solution, but in the case of higher values of salt solutions than 3% NaCl solution, the coating film is easily deteriorated due to high concentration of chloride ion rather than the osmotic pressure, which resulted in increasing the corrosion current density. In particular, the AC sample indicated the best corrosion resistance in 6% NaCl solution compared to other samples. Consequently, it is considered that the corrosion mechanism of the coated steel plate is completely different from bare steel plate, and the corrosion resistance of coating film by osmotic pressure and chloride ion depend on various types of epoxy of paint in NaCl solution.
Microplastic contamination in waterbodies is a growing source of concern for researchers and other stakeholders. We investigated oxidative stress and toxicity in goldfish (Carassius auratus) in response to exposure to 1-㎛ diameter micro-polystyrene (MP) at concentrations of 0, 10, 100, and 1000 beads/mL (MP 0, MP 10, MP 100, and MP 1000 groups) for 7 d (at day 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7). We analyzed the survival rates; superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) mRNA expression levels in the liver; SOD and CAT activity in the plasma; caspase-3 mRNA expression in the liver; and the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in plasma. Terminal transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assays were also conducted to determine apoptosis levels in the liver. All fish in the MP 1000 group died by day 7 and the MP 100 group had a lower survival rate than the MP 10 and MP 0 groups. The mRNA expression as well as SOD, CAT, and caspase-3 activity levels were increased significantly with increases in MP concentration and exposure time. Finally, according to the TUNEL assay, more apoptosis was observed in the MP 1000 group at day 5 than in other groups. In summary, MP concentrations above 100 beads/mL caused death and oxidative stress to goldfish. We conclude that MP can cause oxidative stress and apoptosis in goldfish, which leads to death.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the contamination level of micro plastics in Korean mackerel and to investigate the detection method of micro plastics in fish. This study analyzed the detection and composition of micro plastics using natural mackerel and wild mackerel. 30% hydrogen peroxide and surfactant were added to GF/C filter paper in order to detect micro plastics in the sea. If micro plastics are exposed to the ocean for a long time, accumulation of heavy metals in the water will make pollutant bioaccumulation more serious. Microscopic consequences The risk to human health of plastics has already been studied by many researchers and the risks to human health already caused by marine microorganisms and zooplankton are becoming clear. The conclusion of this study is that there is a difference between the length and height of the mackerel when it is cooked from the standpoint of food in terms of practical implications. The conclusion of this study is that the probability of micro-plastic-contaminated mackerel to reach and be consumed by end-consumers is low in academic implications. Residual contaminants adsorbed on micro plastics are absorbed by digestive organs and cause disruption, and further research on micro plastics is needed in the future.
To investigate the risk perception of environmental issues, two consequtive surveys were conducted to environmental professionals using a standardized questionnaire from September to October in 1999. The number of subjects were 72 for the first survey and 68 for the second one. The questionnaire was consisted of items such as the degree of environmental pollution in Korea, risk perception of some issues on human health and ecosystem, and seriousness of the problems in the real situation in Korea. For the degree of environmental pollution in Korea, the average risk rating in the second test (7.4 point) was significantly higher than that in the first test (7.2 point). The risk perception on the general human health and ecosystem, and the seriousness in Korea situation were analyzed in the order of ′air pollution′, ′water pollution′,′soil contamination′,′waste′,′toxic chemical pollutants′,′food contamination′,′ocean contamination′, ′odor pollution′, and ′noise pollution′. Also ′toxic chemical pollutants′ problem was perceived to be the highest risk on general human health or ecosystem, and on present situation in Korea. ′Automotive vehicle exhaust′ problem was perceived to be the most severe environmental problems among specific 30 items. ′Industrial source air pollution′,′toxic air pollutants′, and ′domestic and industrial source pollutants to surface water′ were relatively severe environmental problems comparing to other problems. The pollution issues were classified into four categories by two aspects of perception; risk in general setting and seriousness in Korea situation. If the issues were highly serious in Korea and low risk perception in general setting then it is named "the Korea-specific group". Those that were all high score in two aspects, named "the Common group". Those that were all low in two aspects, named "the Nonsignificant group". And the issues were high risk perception in general setting and low seriousness in Korean situation, named "the Latent group".
This paper presents an attempt to determine natural background levels of heavy metals which could be used for assessing heavy metal contamination. For this study, a large archive dataset of heavy metal concentration (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn) for more than 900 surface sediment samples from various Korean coastal environments was newly compiled. These data were normalized for aluminum (grain-size normalizer) concentration to isolate natural factors from anthropogenic ones. The normalization was based on the hypothesis that heavy metal concentrations vary consistently with the concentration of aluminum, unless these metals are of anthropogenic origin. So, the samples (outliers) suspected of receivingany anthropogenic input were removed from regression to ascertain the "background" relationship between the metals and aluminum. Identification of these outliers was tested using a model of predicted limits at 95%. The process of testing for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test) and selection of outliers was iterated until a normal distribution was achieved. On the basis of the linear regression analysis of the large archive (please check) dataset, background levels, which are applicable to heavy metal assessment of Korean coastal sediments, were successfully developed for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn. As an example, we tested the applicability of this baseline level for metal pollution assessment of Masan Bay sediments.

Galvanizing method has been extensively used to the numerous constructional steels such as a guard rail of high way, various types of structural steel for ship building and various types of steels for the industrial fields etc.. However, the galvanized structures would be inevitably corroded rapidly with increasing exposed time because an acid rain due to environmental contamination has been much dropped more and more. Therefore, it has been made an effort to improve the corrosion resistance of the galvanizing film through various methods. In this study, comparison evaluation on the corrosion resistance of three types of the samples, that is, the hot dip galvanizing with pure zinc(GI), the hot dip galvanizing of alloy bath with zinc and aluminum(GL) and the pure zinc galvanizing steel immersed again to chromate treatment bath(Chro.)were investigated using electrochemical methods in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The Chro. and GI samples exhibited the highest and lowest corrosion resistance respectively in 1% $H_2SO_4$ solution, however, the GI sample revealed the highest impedance at 0.01 Hz due to its high resistance polarization caused by corrosion products deposited on the surface, while Chro. sample exhibited the lowest impedance at 0.01 Hz because of little corrosion products on the surface. Consequently, it is suggested that the chromate treated steel has a better corrosion resistance in acid environment compared to pure galvanizing(GI) or galvalume(GL) steels.
