Conductive and radiative thermal model configurations of an imager of a geostationary satellite are presented. A two-plane method is introduced for three dimensional conductive coupling which is not able to be treated by thin shell plate thermal modeling technique. Especially the two-plane method is applied to massive matters and PIP(Payload Interface Plate) in the imager model. Some massive matters in the thermal model are modified by adequate correction factors or equivalent thickness in order to obtain the numerical results of thermal modeling to be consistent with the analytic model. More detailed nodal breakdown is specially employed to the object which has the rapid temperature gradient expected by a rule of thumb. This detailed thermal model of the imager is supposed to be used for analyses and test predictions, and be correlated with the thermal vacuum test results before final in-flight predictions.
Accurate cloud discrimination in satellite images strongly affects accuracy of remotely sensed parameter produced using it. Especially, cloud contaminated pixel over ocean is one of the major error factors such as Sea Surface Temperature (SST), ocean color, and chlorophyll-a retrievals,so accurate cloud detection is essential process and it can lead to understand ocean circulation. However, static threshold method using real-time algorithm such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) can't fully explained reflectance variability over ocean as a function of relative positions between the sun - sea surface - satellite. In this paper, we assembled a reflectance spectral library as a function of Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) and Viewing Zenith Angle (VZA) from ocean surface reflectance with clear sky condition of Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) identified by NOAA's cloud products and spectral library is used for applying the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to detect cloud pixels. We compared qualitatively between AHI cloud property and our results and it showed that AHI cloud property had general tendency toward overestimation and wrongly detected clear as unknown at high SZA. We validated by visual inspection with coincident imagery and it is generally appropriate.
Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) is developing a Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite I(KOMPSAT-I) which accommodates Electro-Optical Camera(EOC), Ocean Color Imager(OCI), Space Physics Sensor(SPS) for cartography, ocean color monitoring, and space environment monitoring respectively. The satellite has the weight of about 500 kg and is operated on the sun synchronized orbit with the altitude of 685km, the orbit period of 98 minutes, and the orbit revisit time of 28days. The satellite will be launched in the third quarter of 1999 and its lifetime is more than 3 years. EOC has cartography mission to provide images for the production of scale maps, including digital elevation models, of Korea from a remote earth view in the KOMPSAT orbit. EOC collects panchromatic imagery with the ground sample distance(GSD) of 6.6m and the swath width of 15km at nadir through the visible spectral band of 510-730 nm. EOC scans the ground track of 800km per orbit by push-broom and body pointed method. OCI mission is worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. OCI is a multispectral imager generating 6 color ocean images with and <1km GSD by whisk-broom scanning method. OCI is designed to provide on-orbit spectral band selectability in the spectral range from 400nm to 900nm. The color images are collected through 6 primary spectral bands centered at 443, 490, 510, 555, 670, 865nm or 6 spectral bands selected in the spectral range via ground commands after launch. SPS consists of High Energy Particle Detector(HEPD) and Ionosphere Measurement Sensor(IMS). HEPD has mission to characterize the low altitude high energy particle environment and to study the effects of radiation environment on microelectronics. IMS measures densities and temperature of electrons in the ionosphere and monitors the ionospheric irregularities in KOMPSAT orbit.
The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data-processing system (GDPS), which is a software system for satellite data processing and analysis of the first geostationary ocean color observation satellite, has been developed concurrently with the development of th satellite. The GDPS has functions to generate level 2 and 3 oceanographic analytical data, from level 1B data that comprise the total radiance information, by programming a specialized atmospheric algorithm and oceanic analytical algorithms to the software module. The GDPS will be a multiversion system not only as a standard Korea Ocean Satellite Center(KOSC) operational system, but also as a basic GOCI data-processing system for researchers and other users. Additionally, the GDPS will be used to make the GOCI images available for distribution by satellite network, to calculate the lookup table for radiometric calibration coefficients, to divide/mosaic several region images, to analyze time-series satellite data. the developed GDPS system has satisfied the user requirement to complete data production within 30 minutes. This system is expected to be able to be an excellent tool for monitoring both long-term and short-term changes of ocean environmental characteristics.

The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(: GOCI) detects the sea fog at a high horizontal resolution of $500m{\times}500m$ using the Rayleigh corrected reflectance of 8 bands. The visible and the near infrared waves strongly reflect the characteristics of the earth surface, causing errors in cloud and fog detection. A threshold of the Band7 reflectance was set to detect the sea fog entering the land. When the region on which Band4 reflectance is larger than Band8 is determinated as cloud, the error over-estimated as sea fog is corrected by comparing the average reflectance with the surrounding region. The improved algorithm has been verified by comparing the fog images of the Cheollian satellite (COMS: Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) as well as the visibility data from the Korea Meteorological Administration.
We investigated the changes with temporal and spatial movements of cold water events in summer season around the East Sea of Korea. Several data analyses were performed based on the various environmental factors using satellite and in-situ (winds, air/sea surface temperatures) data in the summer season during 2013. For analyzing the influence of cold water life cycle we employed AVISO geostrophic current and daily Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) chlorophyll concentration (chl) data. Also, we used daily Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer-Sea Surface Temperature (AVHRR-SST) data to trace the movements of cold water events. We found out the cold water events occurred in the early summer season and disappeared in the late summer season, and the cold water life cycle is repeated in this period. Additionally, we could show that the chl were increased in late summer season due to the inertial influence of cold water zone.
The data from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II), which observes the color of the sea to monitor marine environments, undergoes various correction processes in the ground station system, producing data from Raw to Level-2 (L2). Quality issues arising at each processing stage accumulate step by step, leading to an amplification of errors in the satellite data. To address this, improvements were made to the GOCI-II ground station system to measure potential optical quality and geolocation accuracy errors in the Level-1A/B (L1A/B) data. A newly established Radiometric and Geometric Performance Assessment Module (RGPAM) now measures five optical quality factors and four geolocation accuracy factors in near real-time. Testing with GOCI-II data has shown that RGPAM's functions, including data processing, display and download of measurement results, work well. The performance metrics obtained through RGPAM are expected to serve as foundational data for real-time radiometric correction model enhancements, assessment of L1 data quality consistency, and the development of reprocessing strategies to address identified issues related to the GOCI-II detector's sensitivity degradation.
The early Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS) atmospheric correction algorithm which is the basis of the atmospheric correction algorithm for Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI) assumes that water-leaving radiances is negligible at near-infrared(NIR) wavelengths. For this reason, all of the satellite measured radiances at the NIR wavelengths are assigned to aerosol radiances. However that assumption would cause underestimation of water-leaving radiances if it were applied to turbid Case-2 waters. To overcome this problem, Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models(MUMM) atmospheric correction algorithm has been developed for turbid waters. This MUMM algorithm introduces new parameter ${\alpha}$, representing the ratio of water-leaving reflectance at the NIR wavelengths. ${\alpha}$ is calculated by statistical method and is assumed to be constant throughout the study area. Using this algorithm, we can obtain comparatively accurate water-leaving radiances in the moderately turbid waters where the NIR water-leaving reflectance is less than approximately 0.01. However, this algorithm still underestimates the water-leaving radiances at the extremely turbid water since the ratio of water-leaving radiance at two NIR wavelengths, ${\alpha}$ is changed with concentration of suspended particles. In this study, we modified the MUMM algorithm to calculate appropriate value for ${\alpha}$ using an iterative technique. As a result, the accuracy of water-leaving reflectance has been significantly improved. Specifically, the results show that the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of the modified MUMM algorithm was 0.002 while that of the MUMM algorithm was 0.0048.
Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) is the first ocean color instrument that will be operating in a geostationary orbit from 2010. GOCI will provide the crucial information of ocean environment around the Korean peninsula in high spatial and temporal resolutions at eight visible bands. We report an on-going development of imaging and radiometric performance prediction model for GOCI with realistic data for reflectance, transmittance, absorption, wave-front error and scattering properties for its optical elements. For performance simulation, Monte Carlo based ray tracing technique was used along the optical path starting from the Sun to the final detector plane for a fixed solar zenith angle. This was then followed by simulation of red-tide evolution detection and their radiance estimation, following the in-orbit operational sequence. The simulation results proves the GOCI flight model is capable of detecting both image and radiance originated from the key ocean phenomena including red tide. The model details and computational process are discussed with implications to other earth observation instruments.
The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) on board the Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS), the first geostationary ocean color sensor, requires accurate atmospheric correction since its eight bands are also affected by atmospheric constituents such as gases, molecules and atmospheric aerosols. Unlike gases and molecules in the atmosphere, aerosols can interact with sunlight by complex scattering and absorption properties. For the purpose of qualified ocean remote sensing, understanding of aerosol-radiation interactions is needed. In this study, we show micro-physical and optical properties of aerosols using the Optical Property of Aerosol and Cloud (OPAC) aerosol models. Aerosol optical properties, then, were used to analysis the relationship between theoretical satellite measured radiation from radiative transfer calculations and aerosol optical thickness (AOT) under various environments (aerosol type and loadings). It is found that the choice of aerosol type makes little different in AOT retrieval for AOT<0.2. Otherwise AOT differences between true and retrieved increase as AOT increases. Furthermore, the differences between the AOT and angstrom exponent from standard algorithms and this study, and the comparison with ground based sunphotometer observations are investigated. Over the northeast Asian region, these comparisons suggest that spatially averaged mean AOT retrieved from this study is much better than from standard ocean color algorithm. Finally, these results will be useful for aerosol retrieval or atmospheric correction of COMS/GOCI data processing.
