The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) will be loaded in Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS). To efficiently apply the GOCI data in the variety of fields, it is essential to develop the standard algorithm for estimating the concentration of ocean environmental components (, , and ). For developing the empirical algorithm, about 300 water samples and in situ measurements were collected from sea water around the Korean peninsula from 1998 to 2006. Two kinds of chlorophyll algorithms are developed by using statistical regression and fluorescence technique considering the bio-optical properties in Case-II waters. The single band algorithm for is derived by relationship between Rrs (555) and in situ concentration. The CDOM is estimated by absorption coefficient and ratio of Rrs(412)/Rrs(555). These standard algorithms will be programmed as a module of GOCI Data Processing System (GDPS) until 2008.
In-situ experiment using ocean buoys is a direct ocean observation and has been playing an important role from the past to the present based on high reliability. The ocean buoy is operated more stable than before due to the technological development of communication (GPS, satellite, …) and equipment, but still moored buoys are not free from various accidents occurring in the ocean. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of countermeasures or manuals about mooring accidents. Therefore, in this study, based on the experience of operating buoys conducted for many years, the advantages and disadvantages of ocean buoys according to size were analyzed. and legal procedures before and after buoy mooring were presented to enhance the use of buoys. And it is suggested to realize successful experiment by proposing considerations before mooring the buoy in preparation for an accident.
To ensure the international competitiveness of the domestic offshore plant industry, a consensus has been formed regarding the requirement for large offshore basins for performing offshore plant performance verification. Accordingly, the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering has built the world's largest deep ocean engineering basin (DOEB). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of velocity distribution under various conditions of the DOEB. An independent measuring jig is designed and manufactured to measure the current velocities of many locations within a short time. The measurement jig is a 15-m-high triangular-truss structure, and the measurement sensors can move 15 m vertically through an electric motor-wire device. The current speed is measured under various impeller revolutions per minute and locations of the DOEB using the jig. The spatial distribution characteristics of the current velocity in the DOEB and the performance of the current generator are analyzed. The maximum speed is 0.56 m/s in the center of the DOEB water surface, thereby confirming sufficient current velocity distribution uniformity for model testing.
Remote sensing wave observation data are crucial when analyzing ocean waves, the main external force of coastal disasters. Nevertheless, it has limitations in accuracy when used in low-wind environments. Therefore, this study collected the raw data from MIROS Wave and Current Radar (MWR) and wave radar at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) and applied the optimal filter by combining filters provided by MIROS software. The data were validated by a comparison with South Jeju ocean buoy data. The results showed it maintained accuracy for significant wave height, but errors were observed in significant wave periods and extreme waves. Hence, this study used an artificial neural network (ANN) to improve these errors. The ANN was generalized by separating the data into training and test datasets through stratified sampling, and the optimal model structure was derived by adjusting the hyperparameters. The application of ANN effectively improved the accuracy in significant wave periods and high wave conditions. Consequently, this study reproduced past wave data by enhancing the reliability of the MWR, contributing to understanding wave generation and propagation in storm conditions, and improving the accuracy of wave prediction. On the other hand, errors persisted under high wave conditions because of wave shadow effects, necessitating more data collection and future research.
The interannual variability of the tropical Indian Ocean SST is investigated by analyzing the ocean assimilation data. It is significant that since 1970, ENSO events frequently followed the Indian Ocean Dipole event. The SST tendency due to the dynamical SST advections over the tropical Indian Ocean sufficiently overwhelms that due to other thermodynamic process during the fall and winter of ENSO. Especially, the strong cooling due to the anomalous vertical advection by the mean upwelling and the warming due to the horizontal advection are attributed to the cold SST during the fall and the warm SST during the winter, respectively. The significant warming between winter and spring over the southwestern Indian Ocean turns out to be due to the vertical advection of the mean subsurface temperature by the anomalous upwelling during the winter and the vertical advection of the anomalous subsurface temperature by the mean upwelling from winter to spring. We speculate that when the Indian Ocean Dipole events concurred with the ENSO, the surface wind is so strong enough as to generate the change in the SST dynamically and overwhelm the SST changes associated with other effects.
This paper aims to make a feasibility study and to propose a master plan for the development of "integrated ocean energy utilization system", which utilizes various renewable ocean energies. Fossils energy, as the most important energy resources which are inevitable for the living and industrial development, becomes exhausted and its consumption creates serious environmental problem. It is important to utilize renewable ocean energy for a sustainable and environmentally friendly development. We survey the integrated utilization of ocean energy based on surveyed energy density distribution and propose concepts of integrated ocean energy utilization plant for both onshore and offshore system. The results of this study can support national effort for renewable energy development utilizing integrated ocean energy and refer as a guideline for the technical development of sustainable integrated ocean energy.
This paper describes the resource assessment of theoretical potential of ocean energy including tidal current energy, tidal range energy, wave energy and ocean thermal energy in Korea to provide reliable basis for feasible development plan of ocean energy. Because of different characteristics of each ocean energy resources, the resource assessment methods were established considering characteristics of each ocean energy resources. The coastal region of Korea has been divided into 10 regions. The results show that tidal current energy is abundant in Incheon-Gyunggi and Jeollanam-do and tidal range energy is abundant in Incheon-Gyunggi. And wave energy is abundant in Jeollanam-do, Jeju and Gyeongsangbuk-do and there is ocean thermal energy in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do.
