The occupational health nursing guideline for primary care was developed by the Korean Academic Society of occupational health nursing and the organization for occupational health nurses (currently known as the Korean Association of Occupational Health Nurses) in 1993. Since then, there have been many changes in the health care environment and job performance of occupational health nurses. Appropriate revisions are necessary of the guidelinea based on this background. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of the occupational health nursing guideline for primary care and to analyze the characteristics of primary care activities by occupational health nurses. The questionnaire was mailed to 150 occupational health nurses(OHNs) with the response rate of 64%. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. 65.6% of OHNs have been using the guideline for primary care and 75.9% of them agreed that the guideline was be helpful for their job. 2. Common symptom care, emergency care and chronic illness care were more frequently implemented than occupational disease care by OHNs. In manufacturing industries, emergency care was more frequently implemented than chronic illness care in contrast to the service industries. 3. Most frequent common symptoms treated by OHNs were indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and coughing. In the case of chronic illness, OHNs more frequently treated diseases of the gastro-intestinal system, skin and sensory organs, and the respiratory system. Emergency care for bruises, burn, and abrasions was more frequently provided. VDT syndrome was the most common occupational disease cared by OHNs in manufacturing and service industries. 4. OHNs prescribed the medicine for external application more frequently than internal medicine. Remedy for colds, analgesics, vitamins, and digestives were more frequently used. From these results, we suggest that the guideline should be revised to emphasize the activities consisting problem finding such as health assessment, physical examinations, monitoring and screening, and to renew the drug list in the range of over- the counter medication (OTC). In the future, the guideline will include the strategies for the role as the case manager.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the trends of occupational health nursing research by analyzing the Korean Journal of Occupational Health Nursing for the last 20 years. Methods: A total of 268 published papers during the 20 year period were analyzed with structured analysis forms. Results: Most of the articles were descriptive, but the number of experimental studies increased. Fifty-five percents of the subjects were healthy workers. Most common selection of subjects appeared to be based on convenience. Sixty-eight percent of research instruments were questionnaires and the reliability and the validity of instruments were described in approximately half of the studies. Parametric statistics were the main methods of data analysis, but some advanced statistics were often used rather than simple descriptive statistics. Mainly "health" has been studied (47.9%) among four meta-paradigms of nursing science. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop more rigorous and various research methodology such as longitudinal design, experimental study, or randomized controlled trial. Also, special attention must be paid to studying the environment of workers.
This study was conducted to propose a model for nursing performance in group occupational health service. To achieve such a goal, the writer choose and analysed two kinds of journals which were thought to be the most suitable for that purpose and authoritative on community health nursing: The Journal of Korean Community Nursing and the Journal of Korean Academic Society of Industrial Nursing. The total number of the articles analysed in this study was 16 and in the analysis of them the writer was specially concerned with the following questions: 1) Have there been any different performances in occupational health management between staying nurses and visiting ones? 2) What are the levels of knowledge, attitude, and practice of workers and how can we, on the basis of them, develop the program that workers are able to participate positively in ? the obtained conclusions are as follows. 1) Different performances are revealed between staying nurses and visiting ones: Common symptom management frequently appeared in staying nurses. Counseling, health education and follow-up care after medical examination were more frequently revealed in visiting nurses. 2) As for the lovel of knowledge, attitude, and practice of occupational health, workers have average one respectively. The major factors influencing the level of KAP of workers were area, age, sex and status. Counseling, health education, follow-up care after medical examination, and health promotion should be reinforced as core programs in group occupational health services. And for the part of visiting nurses, it is necessary to put more emphasis on efficiency training using the method of nursing process.
Purpose: This study aims to develop a tool to predict occupational health patients' nursing needs or nursing time. Method: A tool was composed based on the materials and opinion of experts, and to verify the reliability and validity of the tool, nursing time of total 311 inpatients in 2 occupational health hospitals were surveyed. Results: The developed tool was total 151 items and composed of physical function, cognitive function, communication, emotional and disturbance behavior, nursing skill, and rehabilitation need. The reliability of the tool was high, showing Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.95. But several items should be deleted for low corrected item-total correlation. According to the multiple regression analysis, physical function and rehabilitation need were shown to be the most powerful predictive variables for nursing time. Conclusion: The developed tool was appeared to have high reliability and validity. But further refinement of the tool is needed.
Purpose: To provide concretely for support system to occupational health management grasped the present condition about the private support organizations for the migrant workers. Method: The subjects were 30 organizations to support migrant workers with the healthy and medical problem. The organizations were investigated by the internet search, and the visiting and telephone interview. Then a expert advisory conference and researchers' regular meeting were held. Result: The support organizations for the migrant workers played multiple activities, but the medical treatment and education regarding the occupational safety & health were scarcely accomplished. The government constructs a network between the organizations. A health problem of a worker should be requested to the medical centers which cooperated with the private support organizations, it makes business expand to the existing organizations which take charge of the health business of a small-scale workplace rather than it constitutes new organizations. The organizations which can manage which build the online network which can grasp all the information concerning the migrant worker from whom the government became a principal axis. Conclusion: Support system on the occupational safety and health for migrant workers that it will be help to the occupational disease prevention and occupational safety and health management, is needed.
This study was done in an attempt to reveal those factors interfering with the observation study. Three trained research assistants collected data by observing the two occupational health nurses working in the small scale enterprises on the 3rd and 10th of February, 1999. The first observation was performed on the 3rd of February without observation guidance. Guidance was given during the second observation on the 10th of February. These data were compared between reporters in nursing services of 'Workplace visiting', 'Health counselling' and 'Blood pressure checking' according to nursing time and frequency. These areas were chosen because these activities were regarded as clearly identifiable by observers in contrast to the other performances. The data showed inconsistency between reporters. However, they were reduced when reporters observed nurses with guidance, although there were still minor differences between data in time and frequency. Discussions were carried out to find possible reasons for these differences. The causes were mainly attributed to the difficulty in workplace conditions to observe, the work specificity of nurses visiting each workplace and the delicate situation between nurses and observers when reporters were travelling in the nurse's car. Therefore, the results suggest that the observation method applied to the nursing service research at small-scale enterprises should be more concerned about the selection of appropriate workplace and operational definition of nursing activity in order to more precisely measure nurses' attitudes.
Purpose: This is a descriptive study that provides basic material to improve occupational health nurses' work conditions and industrial performance status. Methods: The 955 nurses who participated in the training program to understand the purpose of this study from January 2009 to December 2010 conducted by the Korean Association of Occupational Health Nurses agreed to be subjects for the study. The questionnaire included the general characteristics, work conditions and performance of occupational health management. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Occupational health management performance of the subjects averaged 3.11 points and detailed area by health management 3.64 points, environment management 2.91 points and occupational management 2.77 points. Health management performance of those factors affecting the duration of occupational health nurse (${\beta}$=.199), type of industry (${\beta}$=.126), average annual income (${\beta}$=-.277) to 11.4% (F=3.175, p<.001) were found to be a significant determinant. Conclusion: Occupational health nurses are the core workforce of occupational health through the prevention of occupational disease and industrial accidents. Findings of this study can be an important resource to increase appropriate occupational health nurses' work conditions and performance of occupational health management.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship among concepts of the salutogenic model - sense of coherence, occupational stress, and health status in clinical nurses. Methods: Participants were recruited from a hospital in Seoul using a stratified random sampling. A total of 349 nurses participated in the study and data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The structural equation model was used to assess the relationships among the variables. Results: The results of the study showed that occupational stress and health behavior were significant factors, directly explaining the health status of nurses. Factors explaining occupational stress were: sense of coherence, and social support. Sense of coherence showed higher effects on occupational stress than those of social support. Sense of coherence and the work conditions (work experience and shift work) of nurses had a significant and direct effect on health behavior. Sense of coherence and social support had a significant and indirect effect on health status through occupational stress and health behavior. Conclusion: Strategies to enhance sense of coherence and social support are necessary for successful health promotion programs for nurses.
This study was carried out to introduce the Foot reflexo-massage (FRM) as a method of nursing practice based on the health promotion of occupational health. Literature reviews were done to achieve study aims from October in 1999 to August in 2000. The results were as follow ; 1. Theory of the FRM was mainly developed from the reflexology based on function and role of foot. 2. The FRM is focused on the appropriate reflexology of foot with pressures of light-moderate-light or light-strong-light scaled strength for 15 minutes at each feet. The massage should begin with the foot area where it is assumed as a was, of internal to external and upper to lower side. It also should start from left to light side of the feet. 3. The FRM is an alternative therapy increasingly demanded as an self applying method between eastern and western due to the benefit of natural healing power with no side effects. 4. The FRM can be an nursing intervention for health promotion of employees through supportive and educative nursing system in occupational health service. As a conclusion of the study, it suggested that the FRM can be recommended as a nursing intervention to promote health of employees and to prevent disease related to work.
Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the situation of general hospital worker's health management and health promotion. Methods: To investigate the current situation of health management in the hospital, structured questionnaires were sent to 122 occupational health providers by post. About 79% hospitals returned questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test by SPSS 12.0 program. Results: A quarter hospitals responded set up separated health care office for workers, 87.5% provided health educations, and 56.5% operated health promotion projects. In the contents of health promotion program embraced both health behavior practice and disease prevention, musculoskeletal disease control, infection control, smoking cessation, and exercise program were most commonly provided to the workers in order. Occupational health care provider chose the item such as budget limitation, manager's apathy, lack of employee's participation, cooperation provider, and so on as the reason of difficulty to run health promotion program in the hospital setting. Conclusion: Hospital managers need to construct infra to manage and promote worker's health. For example, establishing Industrial safety and health committee in hospital and arranging nurses who being fully responsible to worker's health. And occupational health care provider should advertise health promotion projects both managers and workers actively.
