  • Occupant footfalls are often the most critical source of floor vibration on upper floors of buildings. Floor motions can degrade the performance of imaging equipment, disrupt sensitive research equipment, and cause discomfort for the occupants. It is essential that low-vibration environments be provided for functionality of sensitive spaces on floors above grade. This requires a sufficiently stiff and massive floor structure that effectively resists the forces exerted from user traffic. Over the past 25 years, generic vibration limits have been developed, which provide frequency dependent sensitivities for wide classes of equipment, and are used extensively in lab design for healthcare and research facilities. The same basis for these curves can be used to quantify acceptable limits of vibration for human comfort, depending on the intended occupancy of the space. When available, manufacturer's vibration criteria for sensitive equipment are expressed in units of acceleration, velocity or displacement and can be specified as zero-to-peak, peak-to-peak, or root-mean-square (rms) with varying frequency ranges and resolutions. Several approaches to prediction of floor vibrations are currently applied in practice. Each method is traceable to fundamental structural dynamics, differing only in the level of complexity assumed for the system response, and the required information for use as model inputs. Three commonly used models are described, as well as key features they possess that make them attractive to use for various applications. A case study is presented of a tall building which has fitness areas on two of the upper floors. The analysis predicted that the motions experienced would be within the given criteria, but showed that if the floor had been more flexible, the potential exists for a locked-in resonance response which could have been felt over large portions of the building.

  • The daylited space can improve visual comfort and occupant's well-being. However discomfort glare from the daylight is a common problem in indoor environments and in general, the window is the main glare sources. Some formulas have been proposed for predicting glare from the daylight, however, they do not consider the effect on glare of the view through a window and some studies proved that they are inadequate in real daylight situation. This research aims to identify the relationship between view and discomfort glare considering the subjective impressions. As a preliminary experiment, this paper sets up the experimental protocol to reveal relationships between views from a window and visual perception in a controlled laboratory experiment. $1.2m{\times}1.2m$ artificial window was developed and $0.9m{\times}0.9m$ view image was placed on the window. Discomfort glare and impression evaluation was carried out under four different views and one blank view as a reference condition. The results showed that the subjects evaluated discomfort glare differently with the views even under the same luminance conditions and tended to feel less glare with distance views compared to near views.

  • Most energy using in building part is mainly consumed for heating and cooling to meet occupancy's comfort temperature. Generally, heating energy consumption show high value than cooling energy in Korea because of high temperature difference in winter season as compared with summer in apartment building. The efforts to develope mechanical performance have been studied to reduce energy consumption in building energy field until now. However, the energy consumption in building is impacted by not only system performance but also PMV particularly at temperature and Clo value. This means that energy consumption can be changed by occupancy's comfort setting temperature in apartment building. This study investigated the passibility of overheating in apartment building by occupant' slow Clo and its setting temperature from preceding research and then the heating energy consumption by setting temperature was calculated with ESP-r. The effects of heating energy and $CO_2$ reduction are also evaluated quantitatively with Clo value. The results showed that keeping ISO-7730 standards can reduce heating energy up to 21% in compared with option 2; also, wearing underclothes with ISO-7730 standard can considerably reduce heating energy consumption up to 50%. As compared with option 2, the reduction of $CO_2$ emission for option 3 showed 0.63TCO2 of kerosene, 0.49TCO2 of LNG and 1.09TCO2 of electricity. The option 4 can be reduced by 1.48TCO2 of kerosene, 1.16TCO2 of LNG and 2.57TCO2 of electricity respectively.

  • A partition integrated air supply system can provide highly personalized environmental control. The supply air is brought up through raised floors and supplied to outlets located on the partition panels. The purpose of this paper is to find out the best design of outlets for optimal occupant comfort within a personal task area. Real scale experiments were conducted to allow for comparisons of outlet designs within a personal task area. Experimental results indicate that the location of an outlet is the most critical factor in improving the efficiency of supply air distribution of a personal task area. Thermal characteristic comparisons were made between the under-floor and the partition supply systems. Experimental results suggest that the partition supply system is more efficient than the under-floor supply system in terms of cooling. Such a system allows occupants to personally control their immediate environment, resulting in higher productivity.

  • Excessive acceleration experienced at the top floors in a building during wind storms affect the serviceability of the building with respect to occupant comfort and discomfort. Tuned liquid damper (TLD) and multiple tuned liquid damper (MTLD), which are passive control devices consisting of a rigid tank filled with liquid, are used to suppress vibration of structures. These TLD and MTLD offer several potential advantages-low costs, easy installation in existing structures and effectiveness even for small-amplitude vibrations. This study carries out a theoretical estimation of the most effective damping ratios that can be achieved by TLD and MTLD. Damping by TLD an MTLD reduced the frequency response of high-rise buildings by approximately 40% in urban and suburban areas.

  • With the advance of the standard of living, the demand on automobile goes beyond the simple transportion equipment, therefore the interior noise reduction has been the important factor for improvement of the ride quality. Idling noise is a major vehicle characteristic determining occupant comfort. In the present research two approaches for noise source identification based on theory for multi-input system have been investigated. The concept of the frequency response function and the multi-dimensional spectral analysis were used to estimated the spectra of the noise source.

  • Flexible structures may experience excessive levels of vibration under the action of wind, adversely affecting serviceability and occupant comfort. To ensure the functional performance of a structure, various design modifications are possible, ranging from alternative structural systems to the utilization of passive and active control devices. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art measures that reduce the structural response of buildings, including a summary of recent work in aerodynamic tailoring and a discussion of auxiliary damping devices for mitigating the wind-induced motion of structures. In addition, some discussion of the application of such devices to improve structural resistance to seismic events is also presented, concluding with detailed examples of the application of auxiliary damping devices in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

  • Recently, energy depleting problem have risen seriously. Many studies of daylight responsive dimming system for saving of lighting energy in office buildings have been done actively. Most of studies are focused on the accuracy. However if the variation of dimming levels is changed too often, occupants would feel uncomfortable. First, illuminance changes which occupants couldn't detect are studied through analyzing foreign studies. Second, workplan illuminance from daylight in each sky condition is measured. Because the dimming level In daylight responsive dimming system is dependent on the workplan illuminance from daylight. In conclusion, the most appropriate polling periods to daylight responsive dimming system for occupant's visual comfort was determined.

  • The three design elements of automobile occupant packaging such as pedals, steering wheel, and seat are the most important factors to design an ergonomically sound layout for improving driving comfort and performance. The aim of the study is to find out coherent characteristics of the relationships among three design elements. For this purpose, Triangular Method is suggested. We extracted properties for determining the shape, size, and location of the triangle that is composed of Accelerated Heel Point, Steering Wheel Point, and Hip Point. An experiment was conducted at a seating buck in which the design elements are freely adjustable by the subject to investigate driver's preferred arrangement of three elements. Statistical analyses revealed that there was a subtle change in the shape of triangle according to different percentiles and that the significant difference was observed only for the size of the triangle. The results will be effectively applied to design a comfortable seat packaging layout.
