  • Bufalin is a traditional oriental medicines which induces apoptosis in some lines of human tumor cells. It constitutes the major digoxin-like immunoreactive component of Chan Su, obtained from the skin and parotid venom glands of toads. Bufalin is cardioactive C-24 steroids that exhibits a variety of biological activities, such as cardiotonic, anaesthetic, blood pressure stimulatory, respiratory and antineoplastic effects. In terms of its anti-tumor activity, bufalin has been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of tumors, such as endometrial and ovarian cancers. This commentary introduces biologic and therapeutic effects of bufalin in treating some cancers. The compound is able to mediate inhibition of cell growth, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and expression of genes related to the malignant phenotype in human cancer cells.

Methods: We experienced four patients who had been suffering from itching, plaque, erythema during pregnancy. They had already been treated with antihistamine or ointment, but they were not improved. We diagnosed their case as hyeolheopungyeol type of dermatoses gravidarum, and treated with sopungsan-gaml. Results: After TKM treatment, itching, plaque and erythema were alleviated or resolved. And they gave birth to a healthy baby. Conclusion: The results indicate that TKM, sopungsan-gami can be effective for the management of hyeolheopungyeol type of dermatoses gravidarum.

  • Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is a severe autoimmune paraneoplastic syndrome associated with ovarian teratomas. Most patients develop neurologic symptoms, including psychosis, memory deficits, seizures, or abnormal movements, and experience abdominal pain related to ovarian neoplasm. We present a case report of three patients diagnosed with anti-NMDAR encephalitis accompanied by ovarian teratomas at Ajou University Hospital in Korea. The patients demonstrated a different clinical course of the disease. However, upon diagnosis, all patients underwent surgical removal of the ovarian teratoma followed by intensive immunotherapy. The symptoms progressively improved following treatment. This is a case report of a rare autoimmune anti-NMDAR encephalitis associated with ovarian neoplasms, including immature teratoma.

  • Endosalpingiosis is defined as the ectopic location of tubal epithelium. The term is purely descriptive and does not necessarily imply either the direct origin from tubal mucosa or the similarity of function. This study was performed to evaluate the clinical and pathologic characteristics of endosalpingiosis in the patients with endosalpingiosis proven by pathologic investigation. The medical histories and pathologic reports of 22 endosalpingiosis patients who received the laparotomy at Seoul National University Hospital from August, 1982 to December, 1990 were reviewed. The results were as follows: 1. Age distribution was from 26 to 46 years with the mean age of 34.0 years. 2. Twelve(54.6%) patients were nulligravida and the chief complaint of these patients was infertility(45.5%). 3. Six (27.3%) patients had the previous laparoscopic tubal sterilization by electrocautery or ring application. 4. Four (18.2%) patients had previous history of tubal pregnancy. 5. The most prevalent location of endosalpingiosis was the proximal segment of the salpinx, and the length of the proximal stump from the lesion was less than 1cm in 16(72.7%) patients.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of case reports published in the Journal of Korean Obstetrics and Gynecology from April 2019 to February 2024, compared with January 2015 to March 2019. Methods: Case reports were selected by searching from archive on the website of society of the Journal of Korean Obstetrics and Gynecology. The quality of the case reports were assessed based on CAse REport (CARE) guideline. Results: A total of 30 case reports was finally included for the assessment. Overall quality of reporting for case reports published from April 2019 to February 2024 was improved compared to one of previous study. However, the 4 items of CARE guidelines with an unreported rate of 50% or more - patient's perspective on interventions (96.67%), diagnostic challenges (93.33%), intervention adherence and tolerability (93.33%), adverse events (56.67%) - are items that require active description in future case reports. In addition, Keyword and timeline have more than 50% reported to be 'Not-sufficient' in both previous and present studies. So active efforts by researchers are needed to include 'Case report (or Case study)' in keywords, and to include intervention by period, symptom changes in a timeline. Conclusions: Despite the overall improvement in the quality of reporting in the Journal of Korean Obstetrics and Gynecology, efforts to improve the quality of case reports should be continued.
