In this paper, we propose the algorithm of path planning and obstacle avoidance for mobile robot. We call the proposed method Random Access Sequence(RAS) method. In the proposed method, a small region is set first and numbers are assigned to its neighbors, then the path is selected using these numbers. It has an advantage of fast planning and simple operation. This means that new path selection may be possible within short time and that helps a robot to avoid obstacle in any direction. When a robot meets moving obstacles, it avoids obstacles in a random direction. Sonar ranger is useful to get obstacle information and RAS may be a good solution for path planning.
We propose a new technique for autonomous navigation and travelling of mobile robot based on ultrasonic sensors through the narrow labyrinth that leave only distance of a few centimeters on each side between the guides and the robot. In our current implementation the ultrasonic sensor system fires at a rate of 100 ms, that is, each of the 8 sensors fires once during each 100 ms interval. This is a very good firing rate, implemented here for optimal performance. This paper presents an extensively tested and verified solution to the problem of obstacle avoidance. Our solution is based on the optimal placement of ultrasonic sensors at strategic locations around the robot. Both the sensor location and the associated navigation algorithm are defined in such a way that only the accurate radial sonar data is used for accurate travelling.
In this paper, we propose the sensor fusing method for the obstacle avoidance of guiding robot for the visually impaired In our system, we acquire obstacles distances information using ultrasonic sensors, and its width is acquired by image sensor. We also compute avoidance angle using are distance and width information gained by sensor. After the robot avoid the obstacle by computed angle, the robot returns to its original path using odometry. The robot consists of the SA1110-based controller, sensory part using sonar array and image sensor, and motion part using differential drive for climbing stairs. This system use the embedded linux for OS, and also is developed by the QT/Embedded for GUI.
Typically, the ultrasonic sensors can be used in navigation systems for modeling of the enviornment, obstacle avoidance, and map building. In this paper, we tried to approach an object classification method using the range data of the ultrasonic sensors. A characterization of the sonar scan is described that allows the differentiation of planes, corners, edges, cylindrical and rectangular pillars by processing the scanned data from three sonars. To use the data from the ultrasonic sensors as input to the neural networks, we have introduced a clustering, threshold, and bit operation algorithm for the obtained raw data, After repeated training of the neural network, the performance of the proposed method was obtained through experiments. Also, the recognition ranges of the proposed method were investigated. As a result of experiments, we found that the proposed method successfully recognized the objects within the accuracy of 78%.
In this paper, we have shown a new approach of neural networks for mobile robot motion control under an indoor refracted environment. The vehicle has two powered wheels and four passive casters which support a free motion. And it also uses sonar sensors, infrared sensors, Internal odometer, and contact sensors. Two experiments were conducted to demonstrate our objectives. The first one is that the vehicle executes a reflexive motor control to maintain a constant distance to the boundary. The second one is that as well as the boundary following, the vehicle makes a block obstacle avoidance during its path. Without prior knowledge of external environment. we have accomplished the tasks by employing a simple, reactive stimulus-response neural network scheme associating sensor data with the vehicle's action.
A new local path planning algorithm using DPH (distance profile histogram) is suggested in this paper. The proposed method makes a grid type world map using distance values from multiple ultrasonic sensors and genrates local points through which the mobile robot can avoid obstcles safely. The DPH (distance profile historgram) represents geometrical arrangement of obstacles around the robot in the local polar coordinate system which is assumed to be atached to the robot. To control robot's navigation, a three-layered control structure is adopted. The proposed local path planning algorithm is placed on the top level. And a point-to-point translation controller takes the middle level. The bottom level consists of a velcoity servo and sonar driver modules which take charge of driving physical hardwares. The validity of the propsoed method is demonstated through several experiments.
Recently, the needs for the development and application of marine robots are increasing as marine accidents occur frequently. However, it is very difficult to acquire the information by utilizing marine robots in the marine environment. Therefore, the needs for the researches of sensor networks which are composed of underwater, surface and aerial robots are increasing in order to acquire the information effectively as the information from heterogeneous robots has less limitation in terms of coverage and connectivity. Although various researches of the sensor network which is based on marine robots have been executed, all of the underwater, surface and aerial robots have not yet been considered in the sensor network. To solve this problem, a collaborative control method based on the acoustic information and image by the sonars of the underwater robot, the acoustic information by the sonar of the surface robot and the optical image by the camera of the static-floating aerial robot is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed method, the collaborative control of a MUR(Micro Underwater Robot) with an OAS(Obstacle Avoidance Sonar) and a SSS(Side Scan Sonar), a MSR(Micro Surface Robot) with an OAS and a BMAR(Balloon-based Micro Aerial Robot) with a camera are executed. The test results show the possibility of real applications and the need for additional studies.
The ultrasonic array sensor system, consisting of one transmitter and fourreceivers instead of the traditional combination of a transmitter and a receiver is proposed in order to identify the location of objects. From the theoretical analysis and the experimental results, it is found that this new array sensor system could derive the information on the position of objects accurately, while the traditional sensor system could provide only the informatioin on the distance to objects. This sensor system is used to develop a sonar-based local mapping algorithm. The local map is used to find the existence of possible gates, through which the mobile robots can pass, and to select the suitable one in order for the robots to reach the goal safely in the presence of obstacles. The performance of the proposed local map algorithm is demonstrated experimentally in a small working area with several obstacles. It is found that the quality of the resulting local map is sufficient for the avoidance of collisions between the robots and obstacles and for the selection of the suitable gate leading to the goal. It is also shown that the global map of the working area could be obtained by integrating several local maps constructed from different locations and that it matches the actual layout of the working area well.
