  • This study aims to develop a form-finding algorithm for a single-layered pneumatic membrane. The initial shape of this pneumatic membrane, which is an air-supported type pneumatic membrane, is to find a state in which a given initial tension and internal pneumatic pressure are in equilibrium. The algorithm developed to satisfy these conditions is that a nonlinear optimization problem based on the force method considering the deformed shape is formulated, and, it's able to find the shape by iteratively repeating the process of obtaining a solution of the governing equations. An computational technique based on the Gauss-Newton method was used as a method for obtaining solutions of nonlinear equations. In order to verify the validity of the proposed form-finding algorithm, a single-curvature pneumatic membrane example and a double-curvature air pneumatic membrane example were adopted, respectively. In the results of these examples, it was possible to well observe the step-by-step convergence process of the shape of the pneumatic membrane, and it was also possible to confirm the change in shape according to the air pressure. In addition, the calculation results of the shape and internal force after deformation due to initial tension, air pressure, and self-weight were obtained.

  • As the supply of eco-friendly vehicles increases, the application rate of hot stamping components is rising to reduce vehicle weight and improve safety. Although Al-Si coated steel sheets are commonly used in hot stamping processes, their manufacturing costs are elevated due to process patents and royalties. Various hot stamping studies have been conducted to reduce these production costs. In this study, we derived a process control method for suppressing the oxide layer of hot stamping parts using uncoated boron steel sheets. Firstly, hat-shaped parts were hot stamped under atmospheric conditions to analyze the tendency of oxide layer formation by location. Then, the Gleeble system was used to observe oxide layer formation based on oxygen content under various atmospheric conditions. Finally, the oxide layer thickness was quantitatively measured using SEM images.

  • A 7-year-old dog weighing 3.9 kg visited the hospital with symptoms of inability to stand and quadriparesis. There were seizure symptoms 2 months before admission to the hospital, and the symptoms of stiffness and rigidity appeared. Radiographs showed normal vertebrae in cervical vertebral column. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) were performed immediately to diagnose vertebral lameness. As a result of the CT, it was possible to observe the fracture of the odontoid process of the axis, and the exact location of the damage was identified. The odontoid process was fractured and separated from the body of the 2nd cervical vertebra (axis), and fragment of the process was observed inside the vertebral arch of the first cervical vertebra (atlas), and the body of the axis was lifted to the dorsal side. The MRI examination reflected the CT findings and confirmed severe spinal cord compression due to the fracture of the odontoid process. The patient was applied by neck brace and medical management including Mycophenolate mofetil administration was performed. The patient was able to move legs and tail after 2 weeks, and was able to voluntarily defecate, urinate and stand up after 4 weeks of administration.

  • Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic is a polymer material extensively used in electrical and electronic applications. Nickel (Ni) thin film was deposited on ABS by electroless plating, after its surface was treated and modified with atmospheric plasma generated by means of dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) in air. The method in this study was developed as a pre-treatment for electroless plating using DBDs, and is a dry process featuring fewer processing steps and more environmentally friendliness than the chemical method. After ABS surfaces were modified, surface morphologies were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to check for any physical changes of the surfaces. Cross-sectional SEM images were taken to observe the binding characteristics between metallic films and ABS after metal plating. According to the SEM images, the depths of ABS by plasma are shallow compared to those modified by chemically treatment. The static contact angles were measured with deionized (DI) water droplets on the modified surfaces in order to observe for any changes in chemical activities and wettability. The surfaces modified by plasma showed smaller contact angles, and their modified states lasted longer than those modified by chemical etching. Adhesion strengths were measured using 3M tape (3M 810D standard) and by 90° peel-off tests. The peel-off test revealed the stronger adhesion of the Ni films on the plasma-modified surfaces than on the chemically modified surfaces. Thermal shock test was performed by changing the temperature drastically to see if any detachment of Ni film from ABS would occur due to the differences in thermal expansion coefficients between them. Only for the plasma-treated samples showed no separation of the Ni films from the ABS surfaces in tests. The adhesion strengths of metallic films on the ABS processed by the method developed in this study are better than those of the chemically processed films.

  • The effect of the alloy systems Al-Mg alloy and Al-Si alloy in this study on the characteristics of die-casting were investigated using solidification simulation software (MAGMAsoft). Generally, it is well known that the casting characteristics of Al-Mg based alloys, such as the fluidity, feedability and die soldering behaviors, are inferior to those of Al-Si based alloys. However, the simulation results of this study showed that the filling pattern behaviors of both the Al-Mg and Al-Si alloys were found to be very similar, whereas the Al-Mg alloy had higher residual stress and greater distortion as generated due to solidification with a larger amount of volumetric shrinkage compared to the Al-Si alloy. The Al-Mg alloy exhibited very high relative numbers of stress-concentrated regions, especially near the rib areas. Owing to the residual stress and distortion, defects were evident in the Al-Mg alloy in the areas predicted by the simulation. However, there were no visible defects observed in the Al-Si alloy. This suggests that an adequate die temperature and casting process optimization are necessary to control and minimize defects when die casting the Al-Mg alloy. A Tatur test was conducted to observe the shrinkage characteristics of the aluminum alloys. The result showed that hot tearing or hot cracking occurred during the solidification of the Al-Mg alloy due to the large amount of shrinkage.

  • Structural identification or St-Id is 'the parametric correlation of structural response characteristics predicted by a mathematical model with analogous characteristics derived from experimental measurements'. This paper describes a St-Id exercise on Humber Bridge that adopted a novel two-stage approach to first calibrate and then validate a mathematical model. This model was then used to predict effects of wind and temperature loads on global static deformation that would be practically impossible to observe. The first stage of the process was an ambient vibration survey in 2008 that used operational modal analysis to estimate a set of modes classified as vertical, torsional or lateral. In the more recent second stage a finite element model (FEM) was developed with an appropriate level of refinement to provide a corresponding set of modal properties. A series of manual adjustments to modal parameters such as cable tension and bearing stiffness resulted in a FEM that produced excellent correspondence for vertical and torsional modes, along with correspondence for the lower frequency lateral modes. In the third stage traffic, wind and temperature data along with deformation measurements from a sparse structural health monitoring system installed in 2011 were compared with equivalent predictions from the partially validated FEM. The match of static response between FEM and SHM data proved good enough for the FEM to be used to predict the un-measurable global deformed shape of the bridge due to vehicle and temperature effects but the FEM had limited capability to reproduce static effects of wind. In addition the FEM was used to show internal forces due to a heavy vehicle to to estimate the worst-case bearing movements under extreme combinations of wind, traffic and temperature loads. The paper shows that in this case, but with limitations, such a two-stage FEM calibration/validation process can be an effective tool for performance prognosis.

  • Many patients with malignancies of the head and neck undergo radiation therapy, either as the only method of treatment or in combination with surgery. Radiation therapy has great effect in the case of fairly advanced malignancies which can't be operated radically. But the complication of radiation therapy arise because of damage to the peri- and operated area. It is fully known that irradiated tissue shows retarded healing process in the skin, mucosa and especially vascuslar tissue. The purpose of this study was to observe the healing process of irradiated free or island flap after operation. As Experimental Models, Femoral arterial and venous anastomosis (Group 1), Epigastric-island flap (Group 2) and free Epigastric falp(Group 3) with irradiated postoperative 24 hrs were made on 30 rats/group. As Control Model(Group 4), Free Epigastric flap was not irradiated after operation was chosen on 30 rats. The amount of irradiation was single fraction of 20 Gy using as linear megavoltage accelerator. Difference between Experimental and Control group was evaluated by the method of clinical examination, histopatholoical findings, biochemical analysis and DNA activity at postoperative 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The results were as follows, 1. Skin color and new epithelization in group 2 and 3 was similar to control group clinically. 2. Postoperarive patency of femoral artery and vien showed 5% and 22% of ischemity. 3. The externa, media and intima of irradiated femoral artery and vein were similar to control group histopathlogically. 4. Granulation and collagen tissue accumulation of irradiated groups were more active due to degenerative and fibrotic changes than control group at postoperative 7 days histopathologically. 5. The hydroxyproline content of all experimental groups were reduced till 14 days and the group 2 was most prominent at postoperative 7 and 28 days(p<0.05). 6. DNA activities of all groups were reduced till 3 days, but begun to recover at 7 days and more activities in control group than irradiated group(p<0.05). Based on the above results, the clinical healing process of free flaps with irradiated postoperative 24 hrs little difference from control group without complications.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for estimating additional carbon emissions due to freeway incidents. METHODS : As our country grows, our highway policy has mainly neglected the environmental and social sectors. However, with the formation of a national green growth keynote and an increase in the number of people interested in environmental and social issues, problems related to social issues, such as traffic accidents and congestion, and environmental issues, such as the impact of air pollution caused by exhaust gases that are emitted from highway vehicles, are beginning to be discussed. Accordingly, studies have been conducted on a variety of environmental aspects in the field of road transport, and for the quantitative calculation of greenhouse gas emissions, using various methods. However, in order to observe the effects of carbon emissions, microscopic simulations must use many difficult variables such as cost, analysis time, and ease of analysis process. In this study, additional greenhouse gas emissions that occur because of highway traffic accidents were classified by type (incident handling time, number of lanes blocked, freeway level of service), and the annual additional emissions based on incidents were calculated. According to the results, congestion length and emissions tend to increase with an increase in incident clearance time, number of occupied lanes, and worsening level of service. Using this data, we analyzed accident data on the Gyeong-bu Expressway (Yang-Jae IC - Osan IC) for a year. RESULTS : Additional greenhouse gas emissions that occur because of highway traffic accidents were classified by type (incident handling time, number of lanes blocked, freeway level of service) and annual additional emissions caused by accidents were calculated. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, a methodology for estimating carbon emissions due to freeway incidents was developed that incorporates macroscopic flow models. The results of the study are organized in the form of a look-Up table that calculates carbon emissions rather easily.

  • The observation of stellar occultations constitutes one of the most important techniques for determining the dimensions and establishing the physical parameters of small Solar System bodies. The most substantial calculations are obtained from multiple observations of the same event, which turns the observation of stellar occultations into highly collaborative work and groups teams of observers through international networks. The above situation also requires the participation of both professional and amateur observers in these collaborative networks. With the aim of promoting the participation of professional and amateur groups in the collaborative observation of stellar occultations, we present the methodology developed by the Astronomical Observatory of the Technological University of Pereira (OAUTP) for the observations of occultations due small Solar System bodies. We expose the three fundamental phases of the process: the plan to make observations, the capture of the events, and the treatment of the data. We apply our methodology using a fixed station and a mobile station to observe stellar occultations due to MBAs (354) Eleonora (61) Danae (15112) Arlenewolfe (3915) Fukushima (61788) 2000 QP181 (425) Cornelia (257) Silesia (386) Siegena and (41) Daphne, and due to TNOs 1998BU48 and (529823) 2010 PP81. The positive detections for the objects (257) Silesia (386) Siegena and (41) Daphne allow us to derive lower limits in the diameter of the MBAs of 63.1 km, 166.2 km and 158.7 km and offsets in the astrometric position (Δαc cosc, Δc) of 622.30 ± 0.83, 15.23 ± 9.88 mas, 586.06 ± 1.68, 43.03 ± 13.88 mas and -413.44 ± 9.42, 234.05 ± 19.12 mas, respectively.
