  • In this paper, we adopt a position specific scoring matrix as an abstraction of amino acid type to derive two new statistical potentials for protein structure prediction, and investigated its effect on the quality of the potentials compared to that derived using residue specific amino acid identity. For stringent test of the potential quality, we carried out folding simulations of 91 residue A chain of protein 2gpi, and found unexpectedly that the abstract amino acid type improved the quality of the one-body type statistical potential, but not for the two-body type statistical potential which describes long range interactions. This observation could be effectively used when one develops more accurate potentials for structure prediction, which are usually involved in merging various one-body and many-body potentials.

  • Every ship might be exposed to collision, grounding and/or various accidents. They may make some underwater holes on the hull. An underwater damage would cause her loss of buoyancy, trim, and inclination. Although a ship has some provisions against these accidents, if the circumstance is serious, she would be sunk or upsetted. Because of varieties of type of accidents, one could not prepare all of them. Many subdivision could prevent them, but it is difficult to realize it due to rising costs. This paper deals with physical phenomena of sinkage and an application on box type ship, and some results are earned as follows; 1. sinkage speed up to the level of the damage hole is increased proportionally, and is decreased proportionally after filling the level. 2. the curve of draft shows cup type of second order polynomial up to the damage hole level, and shows cap type of second order polynomial after filling the level. 3. if damage occurs beneath half of the draft, changes of head and displacement, and sinking speed follow almost straight lines. 4. by careful observation, sinkage speed could be predicted.

  • Wollastonite-type glass ceramics were prepared by milling and firing at various temperatures using an automobile waste glass and waste shell as starting materials. Powder mixture ground by disk-type ball mill for 3 hours was pressed into a disk. The pressed specimen was fired at $850^{\circ}C$,$950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in air. From FE-SEM observation, with an increase of the firing temperature from $850^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$, whisker-type phase was grown to about 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in length. Specimen fired at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed the formation of well-crystallized whisker-type wollastonite grains and the highest compressive strength.

  • $Si_3N_4$/TiN nano/nano-type composites were successfully fabricated by the combination of a mechano-chemical grinding (MCG) method and a short time sintering process, and their wear resistance was evaluated. Powder mixtures of $\alpha-Si_3N_4$and Ti were prepared using mechano-chemical grinding process and the resulting nanocomposite powder mixtures were consolidated using pulsed electric current sintering (PECS). TEM observation showed that the nano/nano-type composites consisted of homogeneous and very fine matrix grains with the size less than 100 nm. The obtained $Si_3N_4$-based nano/nano-type showed high wear resistance and electric discharge machinability.

  • In this study, we compared the strength of a material used in the A-type disk brake with that in the B-type. From tensile test results, it has been found that the strength of the B-type disk brake is higher than that of the A-type. The microstructure observation and chemical analysis were conducted to determine the cause of the difference between the strength of A and B types of disk brake materials. From the experimental results, it has been confirmed that the difference in the strength between the two types of disk brake is due to the difference in the shape of graphite.

  • Seventeen antiserum identified by stormont method were used for investigation of appearance type of red blood cell in Cheju horse. Phenotype $A_1$, A', Z, $ZZ_2$, C, K, $P_1$, Q, R, S, $U_2$, X and $N_1$ were classified by Hemolytic reaction and agglutination in $E_2$, H, J and $T_1$, Hokkaido horse and Thoroughbred horse were compared with the type of red blood cell. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. According to the appearance frequency of red blood cell the phenotypes could be classified by 6 groups among horses tested; I group : C, $A_1$, $ZZ_2$, $E_2$, S, Q, II : $P_1$, $U_2$, X, III : A', R, IV : $T_1$, K, V : H, J, VI, $N_1$, Z. 2. In group I the type of C, $A_1$ and $ZZ_2$ showed the Similar frequency among horses but the type of $E_2$, S and Q was lower in Cheju horse than Hokkaido and Thoroughbred horse. 3. In group II there was no differences in the type of $P_1$ and among three species, but Thoroughbred horse was lowest as 11.2 percent than Cheju and Hokkaido horse. 4. The type of $U_2$ and X were highest in Cheju and Hokkaido horse but lowest in Thoroughbred horse. 5. The type of A' and R observed higher appearance frequency in Hoklcaido horse but in the Thoroughbred and Cheju horse appearance ratio were Strikingly lowered. 6. The type of $T_1$ and K was shown higher appearance frequency in Cheju and Thoroughbred horse similarily but lowered in Hokkaido horse. 7. In group V the type of H and J showed similarily as 30 to 40 percent in Cheju and Thoroughbred but no observation in Hokkaido horse. 8. The type of $N_1$ and Z which are group VI was great difference between Cheju and Hokkaido horse but higher in Hokkaido than Cheju horse while there was no observation in thoroughbred horse.

  • Detailed low spectral resolution observations of the spectrum have been made for three early spectral type standard stars, HR718, HR1544, HR3454, respectively, for the wavelength region 4,300 A to 7,500 A, using the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) Middle- Dispersion Spectrograph. These standard stars were chosen from well-known bright northern standard stars. All of the observed long slit spectral data has been reduced and analyzed using the IRAF reduction procedure. The derived extinction coefficients are compared with the other observatory result. The derived value can be used in the determination of flux calibration of BOAO spectroscopic observation. However, until the high quality data are secured from a new series of observation in the blue region and are re-analyzed together, the extinction coefficients below the 4,000 A wavelength remains unknown.

  • We present the result of radial velocity observation of a W UMa type binary star EX Leo. We observed the star on February 16, 2003, using Long-Slit spectrograph of BOAO(Bohyunsan Optical Astronomical Observatory). Since the spectral lines are broad due to its fast rotation, it is difficult to distinguish two radial velocities from cross correlation function. Instead of cross correlation function, we used broadening function to develop our own code which estimate the radial velocity of the broadened line spectra. With our own code, radial velocities of primary and secondary stars are derived simultaneously. From the radial velocity curve fit, we obtained $K_1=50.24{\pm}8.29km/s$ and $K_2=254.05{\pm}20.984km/s$ respectively.

  • The demands for robotic and automatic system are continually increasing in manufacturing fields. There have been many studies to monitor and predict the system, but they have mainly focused upon measuring cutting force, and current of motor spindle, and upon using acoustic sensor, etc. In this study, time series sequence of cutting force was acquired by taking advantage of piezoelectric type tool dynamometer. Radial cutting force was obtained from it and was available for useful observation data. The parameter was estimated using PAA(parameter adaptation algorithm) from observation data. ARMA(auto regressive moving average) model was selected for system model and second order was decided according to parameter estimation. Uncorrelation test was also carried out to verify convergence of parameter.

  • Results from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) will help interpret the data from the operational satellite system. However, a major problem exists because a follow-on experiment to ERBE is not planned until the late 1990`s. Meanwhile, it will be necessary to provide OLR estimates from the operational satellite system. Since 1973the outgoing long wave radiation(OLR) data have been obtained by the 10#m window radiance(AVHRR) estimation technique from he observation NOAA operational satellites. However, those data have not been universall if accepted because they are estimated from the radiance in but one narrow spectral regiou. However , this type of technique has not been exploited for use with data from the ]fIRS multispectral radiometer. Since the radiance data measured by HIRS contains more: information on atmospheric variables than the AVHRR, it is a potentially better instrument for operational estimates of the OLR In this study, results from model are better flux estimates than the AVHRR, The technique is then tested by comparing simultalleous AVHRR and HIRS OLR estimations with a radiation model flux calculation froml homogeneous atmospheric scenes at the regions of desert and subtropic ocean.
