  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the processes of observation teaching and the types of observation in elementary life science class. For the purposes of this study, 40 teachers majoring in elementary science education participated in surveys on the processes of observation teaching. In addition, after videotaping the observation classes conducted by three teachers, each teaching in the 3rd to 5th grade, and their one hundred and eight students, we analyzed the processes of observation teaching. As a result, the processes of observation leaching in elementary science class were categorized into 12 stages (motivation, stating the objective, recognizing objects to observe, free and subjective observation, introducing ways to observe, observing by the simple way, introducing additional ways, observing by the manipulative way, making a note of observation, looking over the contents of observation, finding regularities, consolidation). In the types of observation, teachers and students performed mostly simple observing by the visual way. Teachers introduced time-independent/non-compared/whole observing; students concentrated on time-independent/non-compared/particular observing as targets. Thus, students carried out observing in the types of observation that teachers had presented. Consequently, the analysis about the processes of observation teaching can establish an effective teaching program for observing in scientific activities by reconstructing its observing target and suitable topic. The analysis about the types of observation can be applied to set up strategies for improving observation skills.

  • The enhancement of inquiry skills has been emphasized as a important objective of science education for a long time. Of these, the observation is not only a simple and basic skill, but also a very important skill, in aspect of gathering informations about the nature of all things around us, through interaction between the sense organs of body and objectives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the results of observations about the grasshopper(Oxya chinesis), made by the elementary student from the 3rd to the 6th grade, and to make use of them as the basic materials for the observative teaming and the evaluation of the observation ability. Through this study, the collected items of observation are as follows For grasshopper, a total of observation items is 95, 70 using the sight sense, 13 using the tactile sense,7 using the olfactory sense. 3 using the palate sense and 2 using the auditory sense. In this study, the findings of elementary student's observation are as follows. 1. On the whole, most of students have observed mainly by the sight and the tactile sense, when observing the grasshopper. 2. It is showed a tendency that the observation ability of student is increased with the higher grade in elementary school. 3. As the grade ascends. the observations with operating are increased, also the quantitative expression and interpretation about them are increased. 4. In the case of same grade, there is no significant difference between students' gender, though girls' ability of the observation showed somewhat higher than boys' 5. Occasionally, the interpretations on the observative facts made by student, are inaccurate. Basis on the above results, we suggested some directions for the improvement of the observative learning program in science classroom of elementary school. First, the teacher have to serve as a guide and encouragement in the observative learning class, to be accomplished the various observation, which all the sensory organ can be used by student than the sight sense. Second, to get elevated the ability of observation, it is necessary that some experimental tools(magnifying lens, stereoscope, auxiliary implements etc.) are utilized. Third, the teacher have to make often endeavors showing an example of operation, to be activated the atmosphere of operative observation.

  • This study has analyzed the process of space information perceived and recognized through the estimation of observation frequency and number according to the time range of observation data acquired from observation experiment with the object of hospital lobby. The followings are the results analyzed at this study. First, the continual observation of 3 and 6 times was attentive and conscious for probing to find an object rather than for acquiring exact information and that of 9 times could be regarded as the time for acquiring visual appreciation. However, the repetitive occurrence of high and low frequencies can be thought of repetitive acts for visual appreciation. Second, the continual observation of 3 and 6 times had the highest observation frequency of II, while that of 9 times had the highest observation frequency of III. In case of 3 and 6 times, the observation frequency had the tendency to become a little higher after being low since V, and in case of 9 times it had the repetition of becoming low and high and from IX it characteristically got higher. This feature can be thought to be the process that the subject repeats the fixation and movement of observation at a visual activity for perception and recognition. In the process of first observation, the observation frequency was the highest after 20 seconds or so, but since then, it gets lower and repeatedly gets higher and lower as time passes. After 90 seconds, the frequency showed the tendency of getting higher continuously. Third, the examination of changing features of frequency may show the characteristics of exploration for and attention to space but if the observation frequency is not associated with observation times for analysis there will a limitation that the features of observation frequency cannot be clarified. Accordingly, the simultaneous analysis of both is very effective for estimating the observation characteristics seen at the processes of perception and recognition. Fourth, the general analysis of the both revealed: with the progress of observation time the discontinuous space exploration decreased, and as the observation time got longer the fixed attention to a specific spot increased. Fifth, in order to estimate the observation characteristics by the change of time range the observation frequency and times by trend line was analyzed, which approach seems to be an appropriate technique that can comprehensively show the overall flow of time series data.

  • In this study, before and after sunset carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature were observed in two points of atmosphere (lower observation point of the GL + 0.1 m, the upper observation point of GL + 1.0 m) on the foreshore at located in Suncheon Bay and their variations were analyzed. Observation was performed on the foreshore on 2~4 August 2010. Instrument (VAISALA, GMP343) was set two hours before sunset and then observation was made continuously for six hours. In three days, observed carbon dioxide concentration was 375~419 ppm, and the air temperature was in the range of $28.7{\sim}32.5^{\circ}C$. The average concentration of carbon dioxide was 388~399 ppm in the upper observation point and 386~396 ppm in the lower observation point. It was higher in the upper observation point and its fluctuations were similar in two observation points. Correlation coefficients between carbon dioxide concentration and air temperature in the upper observation point were in the range of -0.64~-0.88, and were calculated -0.65 to -0.90 in the lower observation point. For the carbon dioxide concentration, correlation coefficients between the upper part and the lower part were very high as 0.98 in three times. For the air temperature, correlation coefficients between the upper part and the lower part were very high as 0.97 and 0.99. In the same observation time, the slope of the linear regression function as carbon dioxide concentration in the lower observation point for the upper observation point was in the range of 0.97~1.01. Carbon dioxide concentration was slightly higher in the upper observation point. Because carbon dioxide in the lower observation point was closer on the surface of the foreshore and absorbed from atmosphere to the foreshore. In this study, it was showed that the vertical variation of carbon dioxide concentration was insignificant in the several meter scale of atmosphere on the surface of the foreshore.

  • It is easier to objectify the designing process with the analysis of how users perceive any space depending on the purpose of space visiting in the interactions of them and images. This study analyzed the observation characteristics perceived through observation frequency and time depending on the purpose cafe customers to understand what effect the design factors constructing the space has on the observation characteristics which are the results obtained as information through visual perception. The followings are the results of this study. First, The time range for searching or wandering and the observation characteristics could be estimated by the meaning of observation time by grade with the setup of time-range out of the distribution of sections. Second, at the time distribution by section, when there was intention, the observation time was found to have higher occupation. Third, though the higher section frequency is likely to have more observation time, the grades of II/V had higher frequency of [Intention] and the time had higher [Non-Intention], which revealed that there is a tendency for the observation characteristics vary in a large degree depending on whether there was intention or not. Fourth, by the application of the observation characteristics of each grade for interrelation analysis depending on whether there is any intention to the space of cafe, the detailed space characteristics could be compared with observation tendency. The difference of obtained information has an effect on obtaining perceived information, and since the intention may affect any information which is obtained, it is necessary for design information suitable to visit purpose or users' observation intention to be transferred in the process of designing. Analyzing the effect of any change to designing factors on the sight inducing intention and synchronization will help to understand the emotional design focused on users.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify how primary students make decision in an anomalous situation of discrepancy between the observation result and their prior knowledge and what is the relationship between their decision and views on science. In this study, the researchers have observed a science class of fifth graders for two months and collected qualitative data such as field note, audio transcript, video-recording, photo and interviews. It is shown that participants experienced three types of subjective observation as listed: expectation-related, theory-dependent and dilemmatic observation. The questionnaire of the students to the views on science reveals that most of them thought highly of empiricism and utility of science. With this result, it is found that they took into account the limitation and provision of experiments while making judgment in an anomalous situation. That is to say, their assessment of experiments and observation is crucial in judgment in the situation that their observation is incompatible with their prior knowledge. The researchers conclude that their views on science may influence their observation and suggest the ways to promote students' ability linked to observation.

  • This study analyzed and defines the property of visual perception throughout the revision of the observation time of the original space and the rotating space. The conclusions of this study are as fellows: First, based on the existing theory and experiment, the study obtained the basis which decides the sector data originating fixation-gaze after staring the specific sector over 300ms time. It will become the turning point hereafter for our research to fix the time in this way. Second, in analyzing the minute data, the study built a revision method of the observation time by analyzing the meanings and the reasons of the revision of the original data. Third, according to the difference of revision quantity, female testee have more increases in the amount of data than male testee from the original screen. On the other hand, the opposite tendency appears from the previous data. This shows there is a difference in the observation properly by sex. Last, we could grasp Information about the property of the observation time throughout eyeball fixations, and the revision and analysis of the 'controlled observation data'. These data can be used in design element arrangement of interior space, hereafter.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of observation knowledge generation based on a scientific observation strategy in 6th grade students. In this study, we selected the topics related to the observation in elementary science curricula and developed worksheets and guidelines such that subjects accomplished the systematic observation based on the method and strategy of the observation knowledge generation. Seventy-five 6thgraders, 38 for the experimental group and 37 for the control group, were chosen for this study. The experimental group was taught the science lessons with 14 sessions based on the generation of various scientific observation types, whereas the control group was provided with traditional lessons. Before and after the treatment, a candle-burning task was set for subjects to test the effect of the lessons of scientific observation knowledge generation. According to the results, subjects in the experimental group were more effective in the generation of various observations than subjects in the traditional one. The observation abilities of the experimental group was shown statistically to have a significantly higher performance in richness and the diversity. In addition, they showed higher scores in the scientific observation ability task than the control one. Therefore, the systematic lesson strategy in scientific observation is presumably effective to improve students' ability of scientific observation knowledge generation.
