  • Surface heat balance of the northern sea of Cheju Island for summer in 1993 and 1994 is analyzed using the observation data obtained by Marine Research Institute, Cheju National University. Each flux elements at the sea surface is derived from the marine meteorological reports with application of an aerodynamical bulk method for the turbulent heat fluxes, and empirical formulae for the long-wave radiation heat fluxes. The flux divergence of oceanic heat transport and the rate of heat storage in the ocean are estimated as residual. The features of the surface heat balance are mainly decided by the solar radiation flux and the latent heat flux for 199B. But the Bowen Ratios were large for 1993. This means that the sensible heat fluxes were nearly equal to the latent heat fluxes for 1993. In this period, mean flux divergence of oceanic heat transport is about 130 W/$m^2$.

  • The objectives of this article are to grasp the characteristics of the apartment buildings with commercial facilities through various case studies and to present alternative measures in planning method to the issue of division of space function. To present the alternative planning method on apartment buildings with commercial facilities in urban housing blocks, 34 cases completed in 1990's were chosen in Seoul area. Substantial methods such as field research, close observation and interviews were carried out to analyze on these subjects. The analysis were focused on the sizes and features of apartment buildings and its relationships to other components. Other components can be roughly divided into four sectors which are environments, roads, arrangements of the main building and public facilities and commercial facilities inside the resident blocks.

  • Objective: Ayurveda is a complementary and alternative medical (CAM) system that has been practiced primarily in the Indian sub·continent for 5,000 years. As need for CAM increases, interest in Ayurveda is drawing more attention in Western countries. But in Korea, understanding of Ayurveda is superficial due to a lack of information and research. In this article, we investigated not only the philosophical features of Indian Traditional Medicine, but its relationship with Korean Oriental Medicine. Methods: From April to August 2004, we sought mutual cooperation through observation at research institutes (Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, National Institute of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Science, Pharmacopoeial Laboratory for Indian Medicine) and performed on-the-spot surveys & discussions. Results & Conclusions: We conclude that the philosophies of Indian Traditional Medicine could extend those of Korean Oriental Medicine. Adopting some promising Indian Traditional Medicine techniques such as PanchaKarma and KsharaSutra treatments which have been shown to have efficacy and safety could contribute to the development of Korean Oriental Medicine's internal & external medical treatment. Further studies of Indian Traditional Medicine are needed.

  • This paper has dealt with the probability of oyster shell desiccant cooling system driven by renewable energy of photo-volatic effect with fundamental experiment. The test materials for desiccant are activated charcoal, silica-gel, hi-dry, and oyster shell. The experiments were mainly performed with focusing on the observation of surface features, adsorption amounts of the adsorbent species, and the effect of temperature. Oyster shell has sufficient probability for using as desiccant in a air-conditioning system. Moreover, the heat releasing device would be attached in the system, the system based with oyster shell can be operated with high efficiency.

  • The destructive method is reliable and widely used for the estimation of material degradation but, it have time-consuming and a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. Therefore, the estimation of degraded structural materials by nondestructive evaluation is strongly desired. In this paper, the use of guided wave was suggested for the evaluation of thermally damaged 2.25 Cr-lMo steel as an alternative way to compensate for limitations of fracture tests. The observation of microstructure variations of the material including carbide precipitation increase and spheroidization near grain boundary was conducted and the correlation with the guided wave features such as energy loss ratio and group velocity changes was investigated. Through this study, the feasibility of ultrasonic guided wave evaluation for thermally damaged materials was explored.

  • An image analysis was used for the interpretation of microstructures of ferrous metal artifacts. For the purposes, various microstructural features such as average grain size, phase area, shape factor, and composition of the inclusions, were parameterized for the information about manufacturing techniques such as casting, heating and tempering. The carbon content was determined through the evaluation of the amount of pearlite phase. As the amount of pearlite phase increased the shape factor also increased. Grain size was relatively smaller in trans-section than in cross-section. The manufacturing direction was trans-sectional because the orientation of inclusions was elongated lengthwise. All inclusions was of silicate groups and the manufacturing temperature was estimated up to $1450^{\circ}C$.

  • Sea surface cooling (SSC) with the passage of typhoons is examined in the East Sea using the Japan Meteorological Agency buoy data $(37^{\circ}45'N,\;134^{\circ}23'E)$ during 1983-2000 and a three-dimensional primitive equation model (the Princeton Ocean Model). Forty typhoons in this period induced the SST decrease ranging from about $-0.5^{\circ}C\;to\;-4.3^{\circ}C.$ Intense SSC $(<-2^{\circ}C)$ occurs with typhoons that passed mainly through the left-hand side of the buoy station. The model is implemented to examine a physical process of SSC with a typical-track typhoon in the northwestern Pacific $(24^{\circ}N\;to\;52^{\circ}N).$ The model well reproduces prominent features in the observation and addresses how it happens; SSC is induced mainly by momentum mixing effect stirred with the typhoon rather than upwelling.

  • We introduce a technical approach for reducing three-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopic data generated by integral field spectroscopy or slit-scanning observations. The first part of data reduction using IRAF presents a guideline for processing spectral images from long-slit IR spectroscopy. Multichannel image reconstruction, Image Analysis and Display (MIRIAD) is used in the later part to construct and analyze the data cubes which contain spatial and kinematic information of the objects. This technic has been applied to a sample data set of diffuse 2.1218 ${\mu}m$ $H_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission features observed by slit-scanning around Sgr A East in the Galactic center. Details of image processing for the high-dispersion infrared data are described to suggest a sequence of contamination cleaning and distortion correction. Practical solutions for handling data cubes are presented for survey observations with various configurations of slit positioning.

  • In manufacturing of welded parts which require a proof on acceptance close observation of the process is mandatory. The manufacturer is obliged to document the welding process. An approach for monitoring and recording the process of laser beam welding combining theoretical knowledge, process monitoring and welding experience will be presented. The range of application of a device for co-axial process monitoring was extended up to 20 mm sheet thickness welded in one pass at beam powers of up to 20 kW. Crucial features of the process which refer to the formation of failures were observed. The results presented give rise to the general applicability of the approach for process monitoring and recording as well as failure management.

  • The purpose of this ethnographic study was to observe and understand interactions of toddlers and teachers in context. Specific questions were "What are the motives and features of the interactions between toddlers and teacher?" Subjects were twenty 2-year-old daycare children and their teachers. Methods covered 11 weeks of interviews and participatory observation. The major findings were that the interactions between toddlers and teachers was mainly initiated by toddlers and consist of physiological and emotional needs, conflict mediation and participation in play. As toddler get to the age of self-recognition but still need adult's assistance, the co-existence of dependence and independence was evident. Children used a variety of verbal and non-verbal signals with both positive and non-positive overtons.
