Clipart is artificial visual contents that are created using various tools such as Illustrator to highlight some information. Here, the style of the clipart plays a critical role in determining how it looks. However, previous studies on clipart are focused only on the object recognition [16], segmentation, and retrieval of clipart images using hand-craft image features. Recently, some clipart classification researches based on the style similarity using CNN have been proposed, however, they have used different CNN-models and experimented with different benchmark dataset so that it is very hard to compare their performances. This paper presents an experimental analysis of the clipart classification based on the style similarity with two well-known CNN-models (Inception Resnet V2 [13] and VGG-16 [14] and transfers learning with the same benchmark dataset (Microsoft Style Dataset 3.6K). From this experiment, we find out that the accuracy of Inception Resnet V2 is better than VGG for clipart style classification because of its deep nature and convolution map with various sizes in parallel. We also find out that the end-to-end training can improve the accuracy more than 20% in both CNN models.
This paper presented a method using past land cover maps in image segmentation and training set collection for updating land cover maps. In this method, the object boundaries in past land cover maps were used for segmenting image clearly. Also, the classes of past land cover maps were used to extract additional informative training set from the initial classification result using a small number of initial training set. To evaluate the applicability of proposed method, a case study for updating land cover maps was carried out using middle-level land cover maps and WorldView-2 image in the Taean-gun, South Korea. As a result of the case study, the confusions between urban and barren, paddy/dry field and grassland in the initial classification result were reduced by adding training set. In addition, the object segmentation using boundaries of past land cover map cleared land cover boundaries and improved classification accuracy. Based on the result of case study, the proposed method using past land cover maps is expected to be useful for updating land cover maps.
With the personal-media development that has emerged through various means such as UCC and SNS, many media studies have been completed for the purposes of analysis and recognition, thereby improving the object-recognition level. The focus of these studies is a classification of media that is based on a recognition of the corresponding objects, rather than the use of the title, tag, and scripter information. The media-classification task, however, is intensive in terms of the consumption of time and energy because human experts need to model the underlying media ontology. This paper therefore proposes an automated approach for the modeling of the media-classification ontology schema; here, the OWL-DL Axiom that is based on the frequency of the recognized media-based objects is considered, and the automation of the ontology modeling is described. The authors conducted media-classification experiments across 15 YouTube-video categories, and the media-classification accuracy was measured through the application of the automated ontology-modeling approach. The promising experiment results show that 1500 actions were successfully classified from 15 media events with an 86 % accuracy.
Under the conditional independence assumption among local features, the Naive Bayes Nearest Neighbor (NBNN) classifier has been recently proposed and performs classification without any training or quantization phases. While the original NBNN shows high classification accuracy without adopting an explicit training phase, the conditional independence among local features is against the compositionality of objects indicating that different, but related parts of an object appear together. As a result, the assumption of the conditional independence weakens the accuracy of classification techniques based on NBNN. In this work, we look into this issue, and propose a novel Bayesian network for an NBNN based classification to consider the conditional dependence among features. To achieve our goal, we extract a high-level feature and its corresponding, multiple low-level features for each image patch. We then represent them based on a simple, two-level layered Bayesian network, and design its classification function considering our Bayesian network. To achieve low memory requirement and fast query-time performance, we further optimize our representation and classification function, named relation-based Bayesian network, by considering and representing the relationship between a high-level feature and its low-level features into a compact relation vector, whose dimensionality is the same as the number of low-level features, e.g., four elements in our tests. We have demonstrated the benefits of our method over the original NBNN and its recent improvement, and local NBNN in two different benchmarks. Our method shows improved accuracy, up to 27% against the tested methods. This high accuracy is mainly due to consideration of the conditional dependences between high-level and its corresponding low-level features.
In this study, a deep learning-based tillage boundary detection method for autonomous tillage by a tractor was developed, which consisted of image cropping, object classification, area segmentation, and boundary detection methods. Full HD (1920 × 1080) images were obtained using a RGB camera installed on the hood of a tractor and were cropped to 112 × 112 size images to generate a dataset for training the classification model. The classification model was constructed based on convolutional neural networks, and the path boundary was detected using a probability map, which was generated by the integration of softmax outputs. The results show that the F1-score of the classification was approximately 0.91, and it had a similar performance as the deep learning-based classification task in the agriculture field. The path boundary was determined with edge detection and the Hough transform, and it was compared to the actual path boundary. The average lateral error was approximately 11.4 cm, and the average angle error was approximately 8.9°. The proposed technique can perform as well as other approaches; however, it only needs low cost memory to execute the process unlike other deep learning-based approaches. It is possible that an autonomous farm robot can be easily developed with this proposed technique using a simple hardware configuration.

This research attempted to find possibilities of the practical use utilizing geospatial methods for the balanced promotion of sustainable coastal development and preservation through a case study of Jekyll Island, one of Georgia's barrier islands. In response, this research provided ways for practical use in sustainable development and preservation plans. First this research thoroughly investigated the 1996 master plan of Jekyll Island and tried to recalculate developed and undeveloped areas. Second, new estimations for developed areas were investigated through field survey. Third, this research proposed the use of the satellite images with different levels of spatial resolutions and tested different classification schemes to find possibilities for practical use. For these purposes, first, we classified developed and undeveloped features by manual digitization using an aerial photo image with 0.5m spatial resolution. Second, a Landsat 7 ETM+ and a QuickBird satellite images with mid- and high-levels of spatial resolutions were applied to identify developed and undeveloped areas using both the National Land Cover Data (NLCD) and the Coastal Change Analysis Program (CCAP) classification schemes. Also, GEOBIA (Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis) was conducted to accurately identify developed and undeveloped areas.

DaVinci processors are popular media processors for implementing embedded multimedia applications. They support dual core architecture: ARM9 core for video I/O handling as well as system management and peripheral handling, and DSP C64+ core for effective digital signal processing. In this paper, we propose our efforts for optimal implementation of object tracking algorithm in DaVinci-based smart camera which is being designed and implemented by our laboratory. The smart camera in this paper is supposed to support object detection, object tracking, object classification and detection of intrusion into surveillance regions and sending the detection event to remote clients using IP protocol. Object tracking algorithm is computationally expensive since it needs to process several procedures such as foreground mask extraction, foreground mask correction, connected component labeling, blob region calculation, object prediction, and etc. which require large amount of computation times. Thus, if it is not implemented optimally in Davinci-based processors, one cannot expect real-time performance of the smart camera.
The paper proposes a novel gait recognition algorithm based on feature fusion of gait energy image (GEI) dynamic region and Gabor, which consists of four steps. First, the gait contour images are extracted through the object detection, binarization and morphological process. Secondly, features of GEI at different angles and Gabor features with multiple orientations are extracted from the dynamic part of GEI, respectively. Then averaging method is adopted to fuse features of GEI dynamic region with features of Gabor wavelets on feature layer and the feature space dimension is reduced by an improved Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA). Finally, the vectors of feature fusion are input into the support vector machine (SVM) based on multi classification to realize the classification and recognition of gait. The primary contributions of the paper are: a novel gait recognition algorithm based on based on feature fusion of GEI and Gabor is proposed; an improved KPCA method is used to reduce the feature matrix dimension; a SVM is employed to identify the gait sequences. The experimental results suggest that the proposed algorithm yields over 90% of correct classification rate, which testify that the method can identify better different human gait and get better recognized effect than other existing algorithms.

This paper proposes a new data classification method based on the tolerant rough set that extends the existing equivalent rough set. Similarity measure between two data is described by a distance function of all constituent attributes and they are defined to be tolerant when their similarity measure exceeds a similarity threshold value. The determination of optimal similarity theshold value is very important for the accurate classification. So, we determine it optimally by using the genetic algorithm (GA), where the goal of evolution is to balance two requirements such that (1) some tolerant objects are required to be included in the same class as many as possible. After finding the optimal similarity threshold value, a tolerant set of each object is obtained and the data set is grounded into the lower and upper approximation set depending on the coincidence of their classes. We propose a two-stage classification method that all data are classified by using the lower approxi ation at the first stage and then the non-classified data at the first stage are classified again by using the rough membership functions obtained from the upper approximation set. We apply the proposed classification method to the handwritten numeral character classification. problem and compare its classification performance and learning time with those of the feed forward neural network's back propagation algorithm.
