  • This report presents the results of an investigation on the fundamental properties of mortars high fluidity high volume slag cement(HVSC) activated with sodium silicate($Na_2SiO_3$). The ordinary Portland cement(OPC) was replaced by ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS) from 40% to 80% and calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA) was 2.5% or 5.0% mass. The $Na_2SiO_3$ was added at 2% and 4% by total binder(OPC+GGBFS+CSA) weight. A constant water-to-binder ratio(w/b)=0.35 was used for all mixtures. The research carried out the mini slump, V-funnel, setting time, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. The experimental results showed that the contents of superplasticizer, V-funnel, setting time and drying shrinkage increased as the contents of CSA and $Na_2SiO_3$ increase. The compressive strength increases with and an increase in CSA and $Na_2SiO_3$. One of the major reason for these results is the accelerated reactivity of GGBFS with CSA and $Na_2SiO_3$. The maximum performance was CSA 5.0% + $Na_2SiO_3$ 4% specimens.

  • This study is conducted to utilize waste concrete powder made as a by-product manufacturing high quality recycled aggregate. The blaine fineness of the used waste concrete powder was 928 and $1,360cm^2/g$. As the main characteristic of waste concrete powder, it showed an angular type similar to cement, but hydrated products were attached on the surface of particles. In addition, the size of the particles of waste concrete powder was larger than OPC and in terms of chemical components it had higher $SiO_2$ contents. The viscosity of the paste that mixed waste concrete power decreased by 62% at the most, compared to the paste that only used OPC, and the final set time was delayed about two hours. As composition rates of waste concrete powder increased, the flow value decreased by 30% at the most according to the comparison with mortar that only used OPC, and sorptivity coefficients increased by 70%. The compressive strength of mortar decreased by 73% at the most as composition rates of waste concrete powder increased. According to the test results, it is desirable to use waste concrete powder by combining OPC appropriately(below 15%).

  • This study examined the compressive strength development and pH values of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate(${\alpha}-CH$)-based binders developed for vegetation concrete with neutral pH between 6~7. Considering cost down and strength enhancement of the prepared binders, the ${\alpha}-CH$ was partially replaced by ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS), fly ash(FA), or ordinary Portland cement(OPC) by 25% and 50%. The compressive strength of mortars using 100% ${\alpha}-CH$ was 50% lower than that of 100% OPC mortars. With the increase of the replacement level of GGBS or FA, the compressive strength of ${\alpha}-CH$-based mortars tended to decrease, whereas the pH values were maintained to be 6.5~7.5. The main hydration products of ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with GGBS or FA were a gypsum($CaSO_4$), whereas portlandite($Ca(OH)_2$) was not observed in such binders. Meanwhile, the pH values of ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with OPC exceeded 11.5 due to the formation of $Ca(OH)_2$ phase as a hydration product. From the thermogravimetric analysis, the amount of $Ca(OH)_2$ in ${\alpha}-CH$-based binders with OPC was evaluated to be approximately 10% of the cement content.

  • This research presents the results of an investigation on the characteristic of multi-component blended high fluidity mortars. The binder was blended ordinary Portland cement(OPC), ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS), calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA) and ultra rapid setting cement(URSC). The GGBFS was replaced by OPC from 30%(P7 series), 50%(P5 series) and 70%(P3 series), CSA and URSC was 10% or 20% mass. The superplasticizer of polycarboxylate type were used. A constant water-to-binder ratio(w/b)=0.35 was used for all mixtures. Test were conducted for mini slump, setting time, V-funnel, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. According to the experimental results, the contents of superplasticizer, V-funnel and compressive strength increases with an increase in CSA or URSC contents for all mixtures. Moreover, the setting time and drying shrinkage ratio decrease with and increase in CSA or URSC. CSA decreased dry shrinkage but URSC had less effect. However, the mixed binders of CSA and URSC had a large effect of reducing drying shrinkage by complementary effect. This is effective for improving the initial strength of URSC, and CSA is effective for the expansion and improvement of long-term strength.

  • Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is the most obvious alternative materials that can replace OPC. But, AAS industrial usage as a structural material should be evaluated for its durability. Carbonation resistance is one of the most important factors in durability evaluation. Test results for 18 slag-based mortars activated by sodium silicate and 6 OPC mortars were obtained in this study to verify the carbonation property. Main variables considered in the study were flow, compressive strength before and after carbonation, and carbonation depth. Mineralogical and micro-structural analysis of OPC and AAS specimens prior to and after carbonation was conducted using XRD, TGA, FTIR FE-SEM. Test results showed that CHS was major hydration products of AAS and, unlike OPC, no other hydration products were found. After carbonation, CSH of hydration product in AAS turned into an amorphous silica gel, and alumina compounds was not detected. From the analysis of the results, it was estimated that the micro-structures of CSH in AAS easily collapsed during carbonation. Also, the results showed that this collapse of chemical chain of CSH lowered the compressive strength of concrete after carbonation. By increasing the dosage of activators, carbonation resistance and compressive strength were effectively improved.

  • In this study, the physical and chemical properties of mortar are evaluated by micro-analysis, taking into account the substitution rate(20%, 30%, and 40%) of zeolite with porous properties and active hwangtoh. First, the physical and chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh are reviewed to confirm that the specific surface area of those is similar with ordinary portland cement, and the main chemical composition is SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, etc.. So, it is thought that they have the properties of pozolan reactive materials. As the results of the strength test considering the amount of substitution based on that of cement, It is confirmed that strength decreases with the increase of the replacement amount of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and the strength of mortar with replacement rate of 20% is higher than OPC mortar. It is confirmed that the amount of porosity is increased due to chemical properties of zeolite and active hwangtoh, and in particular, the size of the pore is greater than 1㎛ in mortar mixed with active hwangtoh.

  • The present study was carried out to find a suitable drying method for measuring non-evaporable water contents of various hydraulic inorganic materials. In Part 1 of the paper, the case Ordinary Portland cement is discussed. Various drying methods including vacuum and oven drying, and an ignition, were used for the OPC paste and mortar having different w/c. The sole vacuum drying under room temperature led a fluctuation on measurement of hydration degree, while the sole oven drying also yielded unwanted hydration promotion at the early age. A combination of the vacuum and oven drying was considered as a suitable drying method for the OPC case.

  • In this paper, the performance evaluation of the vibration damping ratio according to the polymer mixing ratio of the polymer modified mortar used as the floor finishing material of the apartment building structure was evaluated. To compare the vibration damping rate, ordinary potland cement (OPC) mortar and polymer modified mortar (PMM) were prepared. In addition, the mixed polymer was mixed with Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) liquid polymer with a solid content of about 49%. Accordingly, the W/C of the test specimen was adjusted and compounded, and the experiment was conducted by mixing 5 types of the test specimen: OPC-60, PMM-5%, PMM-10%, PMM-15%, and PMM-20%. In addition, in order to adjust the W/C of the specimen, the fluidity of each specimen was set as 210 (±5) mm. The specimens measured density and flow in fresh mortar and after curing for 28 days, flexural strength, compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse were measured. The attenuation rate was shown. The experimental results showed that the density increased according to the mixing of the polymer, the flexural strength increased as the mixing rate of the polymer increased, and the compressive strength was decreased. In addition, it was shown that the vibration damping rate increases with the increase in the amount of polymer incorporated.
