In a previous report, we demonstrated that poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) derived from poly (ionic liquid) (PEDOT:PIL) constitutes a polymeric hole-injecting material capable of improving device lifetime in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).was attributed to aprotection characteristic of PEDOT:PIL for the indium extraction from ITO electrodes, which frequently occurrs in the OLED device with the conventional PEDOT materials. In this study, we report the OLED device lifetime as well asvice efficiencycan be further improved with the modified PEDOT:PIL in whichorganic compounds are incorporated. The deviced performance will be presented in terms of device lifetime and efficiencies.
Highly efficient white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes with a mixed-host structure are developed and the device characteristics are studied. The introduction of a hole-transport-type host (N, N'-dicarbazolyl-3-3-benzen (mCP)) into an electron-transport-type host (m-bis-(triphenylsilyl)benzene (UGH3)) as a mixed-host emissive layer effectively achieves higher current density and lower driving voltage. The peak external quantum and power efficiency with the mixed-host structure improve up to 18.9% and 40.9 lm/W, respectively. Moreover, this mixed-host structure device shows over 30% enhanced performance compared with a single-host structure device at a luminance of 10,000 $cd/m^2$ without any change in the electroluminescence spectra.
To investigate the aging-related physiological functions of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), we examined mRNA expression changes in aging-related genes due to oxidative stress inhibition by 630-nm red light OLEDs. As a result of irradiating 630-nm OLED with an intensity of 5 mW/cm2 for 15 min, the viability of dermal fibroblasts significantly increased by 1.3-fold. In addition, reactive oxygen species generated by H2O2 were significantly reduced about 4.9-fold by irradiation with 630-nm OLED. Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction results showed that 630-nm OLEDs altered aging-related gene mRNA expression levels through antioxidant activity. The mRNA expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase1 (MMP1) and MMP9 decreased significantly, by about 2.2- and 2.5-fold, compared to the control group, whereas those of collagen, type I, and alpha 1 increased significantly, by 4.9-fold. The mRNA expression levels of cancer suppression genes p16 and p53 in dermal fibroblasts were also significantly reduced by 630-nm OLED irradiation, by about 1.4- and three-fold, respectively, compared to the control. Overall, it was confirmed that 630-nm OLED irradiation lowered the level of ROS formation induced by H2O2 in dermal fibroblasts, and that this antioxidant effect could regulate the mRNA expression levels of aging- and tumor suppression-related genes. This study shows a link between 630-nm OLED irradiation and anti-aging physiological functions such as antioxidant function, and suggests the potential of OLEDs as a useful light source for skin care.
Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) thin films were fabricated by Electrostatic spray deposition (ESD). In this study, we reported the thickness, morphology, current efficiency, luminescence of OLED fabricated by ESD. These results were compared with the spin coating method, and showed that also ESD is a good fabrication method for OLED because of its characteristics similar with the results using spin coating. The active layer consists of organic blends with Poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), 2-(4-Biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD), N,N'-Bis(3-methylphenyl) -N,N'-bis(phenyl)-benzidine (TPD), Tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3), and the structure of OLED consists of aluminum (Al), lithium fluoride (LiF), organic blends, PEDOT:PSS and Indium-tin-oxide (ITO), which was used as the top cathode, cathode interfacial layer, emitting layer and bottom anode, respectively. The results suggest that Electrostatic spray deposition is a promising method for the next generation of OLED fabrication since it has a probability fabricating large-area thin films.
Organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) with a hole injection layer inserted between Indium-Tin-Oxide(ITO) anode and hole transport layer were fabricated. The effect of plasma treatment on the surface properties of Indium-Tin-Oxide(ITO) anode were studied. The electrical and optical characteristics of the fabricated organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) were also studied. The diode including of plasma treated ITO substrate and the hole injection layer, which showed the luminance of 5280 $cd/m^{2}$ at 8 V

A functional polyethylene terephthalate substrate to increase light extraction efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes is studied. We formed nano-structured PET surfaces by controlling the power, gas, and exposure time of the linear ion-beam. The haze of the polyethylene terephthalate can be controlled from 0.2% to 76.0% by changing the peak-to-valley roughness of nano structure by adjusting the exposure cycle. The treated polyethylene terephthalate shows average haze of 76.0%, average total transmittance of 86.6%. The functional PET increases the current efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes by 47% compared to that of organic light-emitting diode on bare polyethylene terephthalate. In addition to polyethylene terephthalate with light extraction performance, by conducting additional research on the development of functional PET with anti-reflection and barrier performance, it will be possible to develop flexible substrates suitable for organic light-emitting diodes lighting and transparent flexible displays.
We investigated the light-emitting performances of blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes, known as PHOLEDs, by incorporating an N,N'-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzen interlayer between the hole transporting layer and emitting layer (EML). We found that the effects of the introduced interlayer for triplet exciton confinement and hole/electron balance in the EML were exceptionally dependent on the host materials: 9-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3,6-bis(triphenylsilyl)-9H-carbazole, 9-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3,6-ditrityl-9H-carbazole, and 4,4'-bis-triphenylsilanyl-biphenyl. When an appropriate interlayer and host material were combined, the peak external quantum efficiency was greatly enhanced by over 21 times from 0.79% to 17.1%. Studies on the recombination zone using a series of host materials were also conducted.
We investigated the optimal stacked structure from the perspective of process architecture (PA) through emission spectrum analysis according to the wavelength of quantum dot (QD)-organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). We confirmed that the blue-light leakage through the QD can be minimized by increasing the QD filling density above a critical value in the red QD (R-QD) layer. In addition, when the thickness of red-color filter (R-CF) at the upper part of the R-QD increased to more than 3 ㎛, the leakage of blue light through the R-CF was effectively blocked, and a very sharp emission spectrum in the red wavelength band could be obtained. According to these outstanding results, we expect that the development of QD-OLED displays with very excellent color gamut can be possibly realized.
